You do realize that for the last 40 years VA has voted in a Gov from the apposing party of the president right?
I have never seen a party run away from their president faster than republicans have from W. it's just stunning
Another more meaningful statistic is that the state of Virginia had not gone Democratic in a Presidential election in 44 years prior to 2008. Whatever fantasies that liberals may have had about a "historical re-alignment" swirled right down the drain on Tuesday. In fact, here is an excellent article on that topic published in today's Washington Post:
Absolutely. Charles Krauthammer is fantastic. He could very well be the most insightful political analyst alive in the world today.
He is nearly as nonpartisan as Beck, Olbermann, Maddow, and Hannity. As such, his words need to be taken with a grain of salt the size of a deer lick.
lots of people have been bringing guns to rallies and obama speeches and they dont get in trouble. just dont wear an anti-bush t-shirt to a bush rally and you should have no problems!
The Obama coattails of 2008 are gone. The expansion of the electorate, the excitement of the young, came in uniquely propitious Democratic circumstances and amid unparalleled enthusiasm for electing the first African American president. November '08 was one shot, one time, never to be replicated. Nor was November '09 a realignment. It was a return to the norm -- and definitive confirmation that 2008 was one of the great flukes in American political history. what a load of partisan, hyperbolic horse****. the only referendum was upstate ny, the other results reflect local concerns and had nothing to do with obama.
If you guys just want to make partisan cracks in lieu of discussing the very insightful and accurate analysis that Krauthammer provides in his article, I guess that is just par for the course for some people here in this forum. The points that Krauthammer makes in his article speak for themselves. Here is a link to the article again, in case anyone missed it: The Myth of '08, Demolished The suggestion by many on the left that the elections of 2008 constituted a historical re-alignment for this country in favor of the Democratic party or liberalism was obviously just a fantasy. Rather than being a historical re-alignment, it was just a temporary swing towards the Democrats in a highly unusual year that was characterized by extraordinarily favorable circumstances for the Democrats. With pretty much everything going the Democrats way in 2008, Barack Obama still only won by seven points. The Republicans had held the White House for 20 of 28 years prior to Barack Obama taking office. It was the Democrats turn in 2008, and that is all. One year later, the pendulum is already starting to swing back the other way:
Krauthammer was wrong about the criminal bush administration Krauthammer was wrong about WMDs Krauthammer was wrong about the war Krauthammer was wrong about the economy Krauthammer was wrong about electing Obama But please keep holding him up as a voice of reason within conservative ranks.
