I hate to tell you this, but the more you write, the less you make sense. But then again I am just a rookie so I must not have any legitimate point of view to express. Here's your pizza.
getting rid of swift was the right idea. i'd rather have howard because he can fit in with the team. Would u rather have swift who is just another "kwame brown"
Well thanks at least for the pizza. Hey, I was the one trying to establish every one has a right to their point of view (yes even rookies). My other point was you don't have to defend your POV or agree with anyone else's POV. There is a debate section on this forum where debating every thing is encouraged. I'm the good guy compucomp is the bad guy here. You must have meant to attack him.
Something that shouldn't go overlooked.... Van Gundier, I know the first time that I began to see this trade in a somewhat positive light -- the very first time -- was in you superb debut post. You were the first to label Battier a "Super Role Player," and you made some compelling arguments of why the Rockets paid a fair price. Before your excellent post, I viewed Battier as a garbage guy and little else. So thanks for that. (I still the the upside of Gay was too much of a sacrifice, so that's just something we'll disagree on, but your cool-headed analysis was the first thing that eased my pain.)
I want to vote "worst" but cant find it in the poll, so I voted "bad". Look at the Rockets "big three": 2 all-stars who still trying to get out of the 1st round + 1 role player who hasnt won a playoff game. Wtg Rockets.
How much are you willing to sign Battier in the FA market is how much you should give up for him in a trade. To me Battier worths what he's making now, 5 millions a year. And one full MLE player is his trade worth.
Jerry West "valued" Rudy Gay as the #1 or #2 player on HIS draft board. The Rockets probably didnt know that at the time, but probably could see the writing on the wall that the Grizzlies needed to make some BOLD moves to shake up the roster, perhaps take a "chance" on a young player. We saw that last year when West tried to get Greene but couldn't trade up to do it before Boston took him. I think the Rockets could have at minimum gotten Battier and the #24 pick for Gay & Swift's salary. OR Battier and Hakim Warrick. Basically get Battier and another "asset" for the trouble. If West valued Gay that much, he would have done the deal. The problem is, is I think WE valued Battier so highly, that once he was offered we ran away giggling instead of trying to put West behind the 8 ball to get a bit more in the trade. Just my take. That said, the past is the past and we move on. And I think Battier will be solid on this team.
When a #1 on our board (Eddie Griffin) fell to us at about the same spot, we gave up three #1s for him. Ouch!
I like the trade, but i wished rockets could have done better by requesting for a future draft pick like 08 or 09. Even second round will do!
Ok, I admit, I was mad as hell that day. Part of it is that I don't know how good Battier is. part of it is how the trade went down. I want to say I am sorry that I under estimated Shane. But I still am not convinced this is a good trade. The price is too high. At least they should try to get one of the first round picks from Memphis.
We got robbed. I hate the trade but I am very happy to have Shane on our team. I guess as a Rocket we have been very luck over the years to always have an impact player come to us during the offseason including this year. Be it Steve Francis, Yao, Tracy, Stro, Shane over the last seven years we have had some really big offseasons. In general it is pretty hard to improve your team without getting lucky. This year it should have been Rudy Gay but it was Shane instead. We just paid to much for him. I wish we would have gotten rid of JHo or gotten something more since we included Stro. Battier being on the USA team has made him look like he is in the same league with Wade and LeBraun so thats why this poll is going 66% for but in reality we still got robbed.
I would say so, too. But I think West feels like a winner there too, he would have loved Gay for Battier, but then adding on Swift made him love it more. He's already mentioned that Swift at MLE price is a very good deal these days. When Swift was a RFA, he said if anyone offers MLE, he's matching it. I think the conversation went dry in terms of the Rockets just "dumping" Stro on the Grizz, and not getting anything in return, and West used that to it's best probably degrading Swift in the conversations, but actually knowing he's a solid player, nonetheless. Another thing I'm mad at, despite in terms of hindsight, why didn't we offer our TE + future first to Phoenix for #21, or cash considerations for #27, or get both. And get Marcus Williams at 21? That would have made a lot of people's day, and I would take Williams over Snyder( who wouldn't know at that time would be an option, though) Still back to the topic, West basically accepted us throwing in Swift at presentable disgrace, but inside, from other topics circulating Swift, he likes him. And on top of that, I think Swift is a starter in Memphis, really they don't have any big man, it helped them save on Lorenzen.
Agree with you 100%. If Memphis thought Gay was a top #1 or #2 talent, the rockets should at a minimum have gotten the #24 pick or a future 1st thrown in. Jerry West was doing backflips after this trade.
I wanted Gay but I understood the logic behind what I thought was simply a trade down of Gay for Battier/#24 pick, which would have been a solid move with the draft being as deep as it was. Of course, I was a little heated whenever reality set in and discovered we did in fact pay such a steep price for Battier. Don't get me wrong though since Battier is still a solid addition. I just still believe we gave up too much to get him. But oh well, its all water under the bridge at this point.
Yup. We should have had some leverage atleast. This Memphis team is 0-12 in the playoffs and definitely toying with the idea of blowing up the team around Pau. Dawson should have had the intuition to make Miller part of the deal by throwing in Luther, our 2007 1st... anything to get an ideal SG for this team. But then again Memphis can't help out a division rival too much. Even the 24th pick would have landed us Kyle Lowry or Maurice Ager, two of the 5 best perimeter defenders in the draft.
I see no one responded to your post. this should put to rest any doubts that we gave up too much. it was absolutely too much.
