What did we all get out of this interview? Words and just some more words.

Stone was an attorney. He is not going to give you insight into what they are planning unless it’s to set things up for later. If you’ve ever been in mergers and acquisition’s or have had to negotiate for a living you would know this. He can’t divulge anything that could be used as leverage against him in the future.

    We’re willing to get uncomfortable…

    Thank you @J.R.

I don't think that is a narrative, and I doubt Stone expects the media to influence another team into offering more.

The interview reads like the Rockets players that potentially could be dealt are not close to high priority acquisitions for other teams at the moment. Stone needs that to change to make a deal, and there is no guarantee that it does. It reads to me that he's not interested in more late FRPs, and that late FRPs haven't been very useful chips in trade discussions.

He is an attorney and a boring one at that. He said nothing except everyone is on the same page and his players are talented.

After reading this, I get the feeling that Stone operates like a poker player who can count the cards. He is currently "playing" a "media hand" and anticipating how the rest of the 30 players/GMs react

No. He is just an attorney so he is dull and has nothing of substance to say publicly.

He is an attorney. So am I. He’s right. Most are incredibly dull and think they are smarter than everyone else.

gotcha. from another attorney's perspective - what do you think the main purpose of the interview was, and why now? his own ego? to communicate with the fanbase?

I am an attorney and Stone is okay. We will see how the Rockets look in a few years. No I don’t like lawyers.

Absolutely not. I’m not going to analyze everything about Stone but I don’t think he’s an egomaniac. I think he’s a guy who got his dream job and some of the stuff that comes with it isn’t what he enjoys. He doesn’t like to give interviews. They are rare and when they happen they are usually a bunch of nothing. Why? Probably because he doesn’t want to give anything away which he doesn’t. Or it could be he just doesn’t like talking to people. I have no idea.

All I know is the Rockets have no stars on their roster or anyone you can pencil in as a future star. He hasn’t done any one thing particularly well except find rotation level guys in various ways. He botched the trade deadline last year and I have little faith he’ll do better this time. I think he’s smart, I also think he’s lucky to be able to tank. He has another shot at landing a franchise level guy this year in the draft and then he can see how everyone here develops.

He said very little here, but there must have been a reason for the interview if he's that methodical. Being two weeks from the trade deadline has to be the obvious reason. Maybe the point is just to make a point that the Rockets aren't a fire sale, and we are good staying the course... which I don't know that this narrative really helps. The Rockets want action, and calls for players regardless. Or maybe it's that he knows he's not going to move anyone and doesn't want the fans and media to think he dropped the ball.

Either way I do miss Morey's accessibility and how he was still an interesting guy to interview even if he could say very little.

This interview could've been a segment on Rockets All Access conducted by Cayleigh Griffin.

Go out and get John Collins!!!! He wants to be a focal point. We need a focal point. Prior to Clint’s arrival he was averaging 21/10. He shoots the 3 lights out too and he’s only 24. That’s a direction. Turn Wood and assets into John Collins.

    What do people expect?

Stone: Yeah we had conversations with the Lakers, Cavs, Knicks,

The Lakers offered this for this and we countered with this for that
The cavs wanted this, but we countered with that
    The knicks...

I mean come on he is not going to give anything of substance. Name one GM that does.

That'd be a nice off season acquisition. Move EG this trade deadline for a late FRP and an expiring/short contract and then move Wood for Collins in the offseason (after a disappointing Hawks season).

I'd go for it mid season but prefer to keep https://www.tankathon.com/ going for a high 2022 draft pick. Starting the Rockets 2022 season with the addition of Collins + a high 2022 draft pick would be nice.
