Classy usually means boring. I hate the brick red. I don't think it is sporty at all. I would never wear a shirt that color. This would be much better:
We should use the Saturday jerseys for Monday thru Friday and leave the pinstripes for Sunday... I like the red hat more. And the Red Home jersey can be on Saturday. I want an H hat. Or Sleeveless jerseys would be nice
It's only classic because it's retro. Otherwise there's nothing really timeless about that. You have a picture of the dome, which they don't play in anymore, and you have orbiting baseballs; kind of cheesy if you ask me. And then you have an awful color combination of orange and blue. To me there's no debate. The current look is striking in its simplicity. And brick red is now one of my favorite colors. No other team in the ML has it (well not anymore ) To me the rainbow jerseys and dome logo are the Astros version of the PJs, they tried to do something trendy and futuristic and got something busy and hideous looking. But that's me.
Don't waste your breath JYD... you'll always have fans here criticizing something, from uniforms, to commentators, to the new pope... nothing will ever be universally agreed on. But I agree... timeless is better than "flashy" or distinctive... sincerely, the 1996-2002 Houston Rockets.
I get that the rainbows are a bit much, but I like them. And again the original shooting star logo would be the way to go. But I would like the current unis more if they were a different color. Brick red is too earth tone for "Astro" imo. I would like this in astro orange:
And I'm willing to bet there's one or two crazy ass people who actually liked those things! Different strokes for different folks. I can see why people like it just like people like the old Rockets logo (which I do like although now almost purely because of the memories it stirs). Feel like we've had this debate before too.
The Astros actually dropped a uni from the 2000 season. They used to have a black jersey that they would wear on sundays.
Asking players to wear black in day games during summer (which is when they'd normally wear them, since they were sunday unis) was beyond inhumane. The red looks better.
I actually liked the Black jerseys. I wish they could still use em every once in a while. Wearing them on game days could be a problem, but I don't see why they can't wear them at home with the roof closed. One thing I really want to see though is a hat with an "H" on it.
^ i definitely agree about the "H" missing from the star. what was the point of taking off the letter? almost every other major league team has a letter on there representing their city or area from the seattle mariners to the florida marlins. all we have is a stupid star. i have only one hat with the current astros logo but about a zillion hats with the old school star and H.
I like the current uniforms including the hats. The simpler the better. I don't see the point in wanting the H on the hat - if someone doesn't recognize the star, the H being there isn't going to help them any.
When they first introduce the logo and unis in 2000, I wasn't that happy with it. But now I like it. The reason being that we are the Houston Astros. We are an expansion team from 1962. We are not an original. We barely have any tradition 45 years in. I liked the unis and the logo from the 90s. It wasn't traditional, it wasn't classic, cause that wasn't us. We played in a non traditional ballpark. And now we move in to this old school looking ballpark, which is fine. We have a futurisitic looking roof...with mold on it. What I didn't like is this futuristic team called the Astros meaning star, is going back to the 1800s with a steam locomotive that pulls in pumpkins. Okay, oranges, but whatever. I don't equate the stars and crap like that with a freaking choochoo train. It would be neat if they put a Rocket Ship out there and it would blast off whenever there was a homerun. There are templates on the internet where you can design your own jersey, and I would do that, except that I don't have photoshop.
So what if they don't have a 100 year history, might as well stick to what has worked. Besides, as has been mentioned already they're one of a few teams without lettering on the cap, plus they will be (after this season) on of two teams with brick red as one of their colors. So they haven't stuck to a strictly classical look. The train has nothing to do with the Astros and everything to do with Union Station...I can understand it being a little weird and gimmicky but I thin it's a nice touch. I think the team's done a great job of embracing the past but mixing in their own modern style as well.
When you look back at when they first changed the name to "Astros", they already did all that... with the even more futuristic stadium (first dome), to the ground crew wearing spacesuits, to the spectacular scoreboard, to the garrish uniforms... the whole thing got old pretty fast, and now is routinely made fun of when people look back at that era. MMP is a beautiful place... the locomotive theme is because it was built at Union Station, not because the organization wanted to distance themselves from astronauts... and this team was desperate to try and capture the attention of Houstonians who seemed mostly apathetic towards sports, following the Rockets fall from sucess, and the Oilers departure. You can't argue with results... they've turned Houston into a big-time baseball town. They're averaging 37,000 fans per game (about on par from when the stadium opened SIX years ago). They're constatly the talk of the newspapers, radio, and whatever other local show you could come up with (instead of people already moving on to football, or dissecting the Rockets chances for the billionth time). In the end, the team name is still what it is out of tradition... and they'll keep it that way. The same way that the Braves and Indians don't trot out native american garb for all their fans... the Astros aren't obligated to refer to "space" with every association with the team.
I know that the train has nothing to do with the Astros, but where MMP was built. It was buitl near Union Station. I am aware of the history of Houston, and the eastarn part of downtown.
i like the current uniforms and color schemes. its not about recognizin the star for a team. the H on the star IS iconic. the throwback astros jersey is the one that started the whole throwback fad in 2000 when outkast started rockin the astros jerseys. when i wear my astros hat, i don't want to just rep my team.. i also want to rep my city. when you see someone in a yankees, red sox, or dodgers fit... they're repping for their city as well as their team.
I don't think anybody is confused where the MLB team with a star on its hat plays baseball just because there's no H... the Houston Astros are a pretty recognizable commodity around the nation, when you consider the lack of east coast bias due to are mid-market media size (even though we're #10) and how we're not one of the more "historical" franchises. Hell, at least we're more popular than those hosers up in Arlington who have never won anything meaningful, and continue to play to minimal crowds in that awful steambath of a stadium during the summer.
Exactly. The new 'classy' look is fake, just like the gimmicks in the ballpark. I'm with Meowgi all the way. Home: Road: Make the change NOW!
