Yeh you're right. There is too many variables to give a set answer if you're covering all sports. Any sport there will be times when there is a score and you know it came from the pass and not the scorer, same the other way. NBA certainly the scorer, just because of the amount of iso plays, however other Basketball leagues go towards the assister more.

The assist guy can score, but chooses to assist his teamates, whereas the scorer is not capable of doing it on his own.

Something like Stockton as an assist master, and Reggie Miller as a scorer...who would you rather have?

I knew this was coming. Now you are changing the terms AND you compare two players of vastly different talent levels. Nobody sane would take Reggie Miller over a legend like John Stockton (and you know it). A fairer comparison: If I want a championship, I'll take Dwyane Wade over John Stockton. Stockton was a great passer who could score. Wade is a great scorer who can pass. During the regular season, it's debatable who might help a team more. In the playoffs, there is a vast chasm between them.

The assist man is nothing if the guy he passes it to fails to score, whereas the scorer is actually scoring points, which is the ultimate objective of basketball.

John Stockton or Michael Jordan? Steve Nash or Kobe Bryant? Who would you rather have?

But that is not what I am asking....I am saying

    John Stockton

    or

    Reggie Miller

Who is more valuable if you are going to use basketball as a comparison.

    Zidane vs Rooney....

    for a soccer comparison.

Duly noted, but my choice in players is a bit more fair to ask.

If you're going to use Reggie Miller, then someone like Mark Jackson would be a fairer person to ask to decide from IMO.

It is totally dependent upon which two players are in question. Nothing can be assumed just because one gets more assists and the other take/makes more shots.

Either answer on this poll is a poor blanket statement at best.

OK, then think of it this way.

A scorer who is efficient but does NOTHING else...versus a person who sets up his teamates, plays D and does more to help the team.

What kind of question is that? You're basically asking who's the better player, the better player or the not so better player?

When you stack the question weighed more to one side, it's basically elementary. Like an elementary school type of elementary.

That is what our discussion is about though.......whether a player that can score is more valuable than one who sets the table and can score.

And you are right to me, the better player is the better player...but my buddies argument is that if a player can score, and that is the goal of the team they are more valuable.

Players that are good in many skills have always been valued in the NBA. If you're a one dimensional player you better be damn good in that one skill to stick in the NBA.

You should have just asked multiskilled player or one dimensional player, who would you choose?

The truth is it is not so black and white. There are other aspects to being a good offensive player than putting the ball in the basket.

I have a friend who does this kind of thing every time there's a debate about something.

In the beginning, it'll be a simple question like whether you think cats or dogs make better pets. By the end it's a question of whether or not you'd rather be thrown into a pit with a bobcat or a wolf.

    Ridiculous.

I will put it like this. . . . Avery Johnson
He was a good solid assist man
    but
he could not hit a shot to save his life from the elbow
    ONCE THAT SHOT STARTED DROPPING
. . . he became someone to have the ball in his hands at the end of the game

Being an ASSISTMASTER means you have to have your own
offensive game. Without it. You probably not an Assistmaster

I think you gotta look at it for the numbers
    Let's take Jordan
a 10 on the scoring scale but about a 6 on the assist scale
    Stocketion
a 10 on the assist scale but about a 6 on the scoring scale

    Which do you pick?

As a defender, I want stockton
    Look at the Rocket/Utah series
HE DOES NOT HIT THAT LAST SECOND SHOT WITHOUT A BEAR HUG ASSIST FROM KARL MALONE!
Jordon on the other hand. . . . Dwade on the other hand

    IMO
as a defender . . .it is easier to concede the shot
    and defend the pass
    than
to defend and elite level scorer

What I have done is made it easier for the passer to shoot and
    harder for him to pass
    and
did the reverse to the score

Notice - jordon's GAME WINNING ASSISTS were reletively easy passes
    that I could have made
Stockton's game winning shots were normally long three

I think JVG will take the latter

    You can't do that Dada
make it fair. . and stop trying to win an argument by tilting the table
If MY SCORER scores but does nothing else
Your Assist man . . Assists and nothing else

    Now
tell me which do you pick

    Scorer or Assist man

    Be honest
