That's just it, there's been tons of things reported and most all of them have turned out to not be true. First Philly was willing to move Iggy if we took Dalembert, now it's being reported that they won't move him unless they get young talent in return. The Knicks will trade Hill, 2012 first rounder and swap 2011 first rounders. No wait, the Knicks aren't willing to trade Hill. Now it's that the picks must be lottery protected? Interesting that you pick and choose what to believe and assume that it's true and it was just a matter of the Rockets turning it down.

Why don't you believe that NY wasn't willing to do that deal? Why don't you believe that Philly isn't really willling to give away Iggy for just cap relief? If you're going to believe whatever is reported shouldn't you give equal weight to both sides?

Exactly what deals are you so upset about the Rockets not making? Philly isn't going to trade Iguadala for just cap space. They're not going to do it for Amare and they aren't going to do it for McGrady. How about the Butler, Haywood deal? That deal is worth alot more to Dallas than it was to us. Dallas needs Haywood and is likely to be willing to pay to resign him. There's no way that the Rockets were going to shell out the kind of money that it would take to resign Haywood. It's worth it to Dallas because he'd be a starter for them. He's a backup here and way overpriced as a backup. So, after the season is over you would have only had Bulter left. That's the big deal that we passed on?

What is the greate deal that we blew? Enlighten us.

This is true, a GREAT point as well...........it is all a matter of opinion.

I don't recall saying much about Landry or Brooks, but after seeing Brooks I liked him a lot.

there's actually an interesting and relevant psychology study pertaining to this called the Ultimatum game. There are two individuals, person A and person B. Person A receives $100 and is responsible for splitting the money such that if person B accepts the split, they both receive their agreed upon share of the money. If person B does not accept, neither one receives any money. What the study shows is that Person B will reject receiving a free $20 if he/she knows person A will receive $80 because of a sense of unfairness, basically saying "instead of both of us being richer, none of us will be richer because you're giving me the shaft".

I can imagine Morey doing a 70/30 split with Walsh at the moment asking for Jhill + crazy picks, and Walsh rejecting it at the moment. And yes, driving such a hard bargain increases the likelihood of Walsh going "screw you, since you don't play nice, nobody's a winner" and choose not to trade with us. But the huge leveraging point Morey has is that the Knicks have much more to lose than the rockets if no deal is reached.

If Morey doesn't get his 70/30 split with Walsh, the alternative is Cook + Dorsey + cash to memphis, getting us under the luxury tax, letting tmac expire but having bird rights for a sign and trade. While not as good as trading Tmac for picks, its not a regrettable consolation.

If Walsh doesn't agree to the 30/70 shaft with Morey, the alternative is an increased chance of striking out completely at the 2010 sweepstakes, which was the whole point of sucking the past 2 years.

While Walsh is probalby saying to Morey "please make this a 60/40 split, you can easily afford a 60/40 and you still get out on top" Morey is probably saying to Walsh "I COULD afford a 60/40 and still get out on top, but you can not afford NOT to take the 70/30".

[wrap that double negative around your mind a bit].

I can imagine if Morey proposed a 60/40 split, we'd have a deal. However, Morey is pushing for a 70/30 because it would hurt the Knicks more to reject the deal than to take. This opens the possibility of NO deal, but I'm okay with Morey banking on the Knicks valuing their sense of self preservation over their sense pride and taking the 70/30 deal.

everybody's diff which makes it ur own opinion, me, I would milk they ass till the last posibble minute bcuz the person on the other end will get more and more desperate.. boy havent u ever heard of the age old phrase 'patience is a virtue'? or better yet 'good things come to those who wait'?
why run down a hill and get 1 when u can walk and get em all? what im trying to say its a better strategy to wait and its an opinion but its a very accurate opinion and the main thing is that every trade scenario has its own life, and this McLazy trade is so dif and unique from most others (other than Amare)

Yes "it seems" is the operative descriptor for this whole process. Because we know nothin' for fact; nothin' is nothin'.

Now, it seems to me that the trigger will be pulled on a deal (or two; three maybe?) by the dropdead line on the morrow's afternoon.

You very well could be right, but in my experience, I have seen far more deals fall through due to one parties greed than I have of successful completions etc.

I guess our own personal experiences shape our own opinons.

There are exceptions to every rule, and that deal turned out to be ok for the Grizzlies too in the long run, which is what they were looking to get out of the deal.

Plus, didn't Gasol reportedly quit on them? So all in all, this was a good trade for both parties. He was hurting them more so than helping them just like Tracy McGrady is doing to us. But with Gasol, he didn't have an excuse like health to fall back on.

If deal making was just about taking the first fair offer, it wouldn't be an "Art" now would it?

While I understand where you're coming from DD I'm afraid you got the scenario wrong. You picture DM as a peddler selling his wares to other buyers and basically you're saying that he should take the most reasonable deal that comes along or he'll be left alone with his "goods". That's definitely true IRL, most businessmen who put emphasis on ripping people off generally don't stay in business for a long time, however DM is not a peddler desperate to unload his goods.

Let's evaluate what would happen if DM let's tmac expire:

*Its likely we miss the playoffs and get a lottery draftpick
*We have 7 mill in expirings while retaining our Fas

I don't know about you, but our current roster+Yao Ming+ lottery pick+ 7 mill FA seems like a solid rebuilding plan to me. Not as spectacular as trading for Iggy perhaps, but solid nonetheless. So your assumption that we would be left with nothing if no deal comes through is false because we have a pretty good fallback option.

In this case the correct art of the deal move is to shoot for the moon, and not settle for the first "reasonable" trade you get. Its like you're an employee making 20,000$ a month. Do you leave your job to go another one that offers you 22,000? No, you go to one that offers you 40 or more, because since you're already making a decent amount an incremental increase isn't worth leaving your comfort zone, your colleagues, adjusting to a new environment etc. In the same way, giving up our 7 mill capspace for a minimal upgrade isn't worth it.

I think Morey is a bit overrated if you ask me. I know he pulled off some pretty good deals but some were just a bit of luck. I see Morey getting good average productive players for cheap but not going for big time players.

The Rockets will never get a superstar talent for a long time. I think Aaron Brooks is probably the guy that will lead this team for years to come simply because I don't see Morey pulling off a deal that would land us a superstar. Sure we still have Yao on this roster but is he the guy that would get us over that hill?

The Rockets need a superstar player to get us over that hill. A team full of great role players can only do so much. Yao Ming on the other hand isn't the player we thought he is. Sure he put up great numbers during the season but he isn't clutch like we wanted him to. When the game is on the line, the Rockets should trust the ball in the hands of their best player and that is Yao but Yao just cannot perform under pressure, especially when teams clog up on him.

When teams clog up on Yao, we have three point shooters but Yao usually lose the ball by the time he attempt to pass it back out. Most of the time, he think that he must shoot the ball so he ends up forcing up a bad shot time after time. So even if Yao comes back, Aaron Brooks is our best player right now. With all the injuries behind Yao, he isn't an all star player. Even when healthy, he is just an average all star player but people think he's a superstar because he's a big market himself and he puts up close to 20 points and almost 10 rebounds. But how many big men in the league that averages as much as Yao and even better.

There are so many PF and Cs out there that put up the same number as Yao Ming. Dwight Howard and Bosh put up numbers that is just out of reach for Yao ming. Al Jefferson is younger and is already better than Yao. Al Horford is close to Yao and even Chris Kamen is better than Yao at this moment.

So if the Rockets want to even get close to a championship, they have to change their whole entire blueprint and switch up their game plan. The Yao dynasty has failed time and time again. Even if he stay healthy, he's just isn't good enough to lead a team far.

So if Morey is that great, he should be able to pull off a move that would land us someone that can lead this team. Aaron Brooks is good but not good enough. If Morey doesn't land us a superstar talent this offseason, I would considered him overrated. The Cavs are able to pick up almost any player they wanted. If Yao is bringing in so much money for Les, why are the Rockets keep settling for cheap players? I know Yao and Tmac's contract is big but that is not an excuse to not go out and get good players to surround them with...

Look at the Lakers, the Cavs, Magic and Celtics. The reason why they are contenders is because they go out and surround their stars with great talent. When the Rockets had an healthy Yao Ming and Tmac, they failed to do so. They believe that by having just Tmac and Yao, they are unstoppable. Well too bad because Tmac can score big but that's it. Yao can be stop by putting a big men in front of him. Plus our bench was terrible. The guys we surrounded them with are just terrible.

So I hope Morey can learn from the elite teams in the league. In order to win big, you have to spend money on a superstar and surround them with great players. Right now, Yao Ming isn't good enough to lead this team. He is better when he's the third option.

Give me a break, superstars dont get traded every day. Morey is overrated because he can't trade for Lebron James or Kobe Bryant... Wow

You might be able to throw Antwan Jamison in there. If the Cavs pull that off, they might be guaranteed a spot in the Finals.
