Doc Rivers Post Big 3 Era? I know there's not many great coaching personalities for Rockets and their fans, but this guy is proven. How much longer does Doc's contract last?
he has already said he is retiring this year plus why would he come back for a team like the Rockets when he can keep coaching a team like the Celtics that are contenders every year?
"Some Houston media is saying coach Rick Adelman won't return next season because of frustration with the roster." http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/smith_110207.html
with so many Adelman players on the roster, it would seem that the Trevor Ariza trade has been a thorn in his side. I just can't believe he was upset with the brad miller signing, the kevin marting trade or the drafting of aaron brooks. i'm fairly certain however, that he has no use for t-will and the fans clamoring for his play only further irritates him
If he doesn't retire, then i think RA leaves before Rivers leaves Boston. I dont see Houston hiring a coach as a rental to wait for Rivers.
Purely my personal opinion here, but I'm increasingly convinced that Les is beginning to seriously regret the decision to fire Jeff Van Gundy. He's finally starting to realize that more offense doesn't automatically equate to more entertaining games, especially when the wins aren't there. In a weird sense, fan engagement was seemingly at its highest during the JVG years despite the heartbreak that came during and at the end of every season, and with the lone exception of the 22-game winning streak, fan apathy is as rampant today as it has been in a very, very long time. As an aside, even my church pastor doesn't seem to care anymore, and he used to be as dedicated a Rockets fan as I've seen among pastors I know in this city. The problem for Les is, who does he turn to now? Adelman's job security is highly dependent on the seeming lack of alternatives on the market, although I think that a bold young hire next season could spur some results.
Rivers has even less X and O's knowledge than RA. If you're talking about just character then RA has all the character you need. He's the kind of coach you want when you have the Big 3, however if you have such a frontloaded team in the first place Rick Adelman would be perfect for it. I'd rather just see what Coach Turner can bring to the table then wait for Rivers. He hasn't exactly done anything prior to Boston getting the big 3.
Developmental coaches are pretty common in the NBA, you can get several as assistant coaches and get them to train your players during practice. In fact, we already have one of the best big man developmental coaches in CD, and Rick Barry, one of the more famous shooting coaches already has ties with the team. IMHO what's more important is to get a really good X's and O's coach. It doesn't matter how well you develop your team if the one calling the shots doesn't know how to use them.
Adelman should have just told Brooks. "Look man, I'm in the same boat as you . . I don't have a contract next year either!" Rocket River I know .. I am slow . . . just getting there
I see it more of an interim coach who focuses less on winning and more on teaching. Then after a few lotteries and maybe a key free agent you hire an x and o guy. Adelman seems to have zero interest in Williams/Hill, who have great potential.
I always find it strange that people act like coaches only come in three different styles. You couldn't possibly get a coach who possesses all of the positive attributes that you might desire. An X's and O's coach who can manage stars and develop young players is apparently a mythical creature.
