Statcast just added a catcher throwing metric, they already had ones for framing, blocking and poptime. It's a bit early to read too much into it, but it'll all be interesting to keep track of. https://www.mlb.com/news/caught-stealing-above-average-stat-breakdown https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/catcher-blocking?players=663743-2023-146&selected_idx=0
They need this stat for pitchers. Javier would have to be very low on the leaderboard. Prior to pitch clock, he would wait for the base runner to fall asleep before pitching.
Ultimately, though, we’re getting closer to what Billy Hamilton said back in 2015, echoing Young. “You steal off the pitcher, not off the catcher,” said the then-Reds speedster. “It doesn't matter who is catching." It does matter, just not in the same way that raw caught-stealing percentage would have you believe. The next updates to this metric -- adding pitcher, runner and fielder -- will go a long way toward explaining that.
How bad are the A's? They gave up 8ER in 8IP today and their team ERA went up only .04, from 7.97 to 8.01
Quick question. I haven't used Baseball Savant too much, but is there a way to adjust the timeframe for 2022 to show how Abreu was doing in the first 20-ish games to compare it to his first 20-ish games this year?
The breakdown function allows a person to see the changes of different statcast stats over time. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jose-abreu-547989?stats=statcast-r-histograms-mlb Hard hit rate averaged over 50 batted balls is below. If one goes to the website, one can hover over the slumps and see that the ones in 2018 and 2019-2022 were not April (though the 2020 one was the start of the season). This slump appears to be a lot worse than a normal April slump. It could be just a bad once every 3 years type of slump or it could be aging (or more likely a combo of the two).
1) I don't get the allure of all the alternative jerseys. Throwbacks are nice every now and then. 2) I prefer to be able to look at a screen in a sports bar and know who is playing without reading. If saw a team wearing this jersey on a screen at a sports bar, my first thought from the color scheme is that it is a Division II school or maybe a high school game. Unless the other team's jersey was easily identifiable, I probably would never give that screen a second look to realize it is an actual MLB game. 3) For the most part, these alternate jerseys are butt ugly. 4) If a ToR starting pitcher likes them, I'm fine with team wearing the jersey regardless of looks.
Merchandise sales. The Astros Space City gear has been the best seller around the league for City Connect merch. "You already got the everyday Astros gear...well now you can buy Space City gear or gold trim jersey gear!" Astros merchandise sales were so great last year that they opened up a huge new centerfield store.
I guess I am just good with the everyday Astros gear. The only reason I would buy the Space City gear is if it was a Framber jersey or maybe a hat to wear when Framber pitches. Me seeing most jersey reveals...
yup i share the same feelings. especially the nba. back when addias had the rights to make jersey, they kept it pretty simple (with the exception of the trash sleeved jerseys). looking at the highlights or watching the game without the scoreboard, you can tell which teams are which and you can even tell which is home and which is away team. back then, most sports team playing at home rock the white or lighter color scheme and away teams rock either alternate or darker color scheme. now? fug it, just do whatever even if your jerseys blend in with the court........ such an eyesore.
