my issue with moving up is it would have to be a significant move up. I think #17 is toward the end of a tier, and wouldn't be worth giving up too much to move up only to draft the same level of player. unless the rockets think there is someone who is a perfect fit within that tier or has the potential to be a tier higher than other teams think. I think these are roughly the tiers right now. Tier 1 (all star potential): Jabari, banchero, chet, Ivey (although some have him a tier lower) Tier 2 (high-end starter potential): Ivey (although most have him a tier higher), Shapre, Griffin, Murray Tier 3 (low end starter / high end rotation potential): Mathurin (sometimes in T2), Davis (sometimes T2), Duren (sometimes T2) Eason, Washington, Daniels, Sochan, Brahnam, Agbaji (sometimes T4), Williams (sometimes T4) Tier 3, as I see it, happens to end at pick 17. so for example I wouldn't trade up just to get the same level of player and lose the MIL pick, tate, or wood to do so. if stone happens to think mathurin or duren or someone else belongs in tier 2 and is sliding to a spot where we can trade up, I'd do that... or if stone thinks 3 guys from that group like agbaji or Williams belong in tier 3 and moving up a few spots gets us a higher level player, then that's worth it. or if we feel we just need a defensive forward like Eason or Sochan and we're not attaching too much to move up a few spots, maybe then too. but generally to really consolidate (#17, wood, and more) and move up, it would have to be into the top 10 to have a chance at drafting better value than just staying at 17.
It's hard for me to figure out who can be a good fit at 17 but I like Branham. Unfortunately, he's another SG.
I feel like we can move up to the Portland pick if we had second lotto pick to offer them. Currently 7th, they're not in play for an all star potential prospect. if they're choosing between high level starters, and that tier sort of lasts from 5-15, I think if we can get into the top 14 and attach wood we've got a chance to work it out. For example can we can probably target CHA at #13 or CLE at #14 by packaging #17 with tate and our MIL pick. that might even be too much just for a few spots, but I would imagine the Cavs being more interested in Tate and the hornets more interested in the future pick. From there I think we can offer a late lotto pick, wood and gordon for #7/bledsoe. This works under the cap because gordon/bledsoe make the same money, and wood fits into the McCollum TE). For the blazers they would get a veteran lineup to compete short term, which is what they want to do for some reason. Lillard, gordon, hart, wood, Nurk if he's resigned. plus a similar level of talent at #13 or 14 as they would've drafted at #7. For us we would consolidate assets into more valuable draft stock, clear vets off our roster, and pick earlier within the same tier but at least we get our choice of all of the players on that tier. and guys like Sharpe or Griffin at least have higher upside than the rest of the guys on that tier.
I’m in full support of something like this. If it were possible. If not then roll with the 4 rookies from the last draft and whoever the rockets get in the top. Then attempt to roll over the pick to next year. Still even trading wood and Gordon and take back some player or players a team doesn’t want. Then you have that pick, bucks pick, and the Rockets pick next year. This way you could move up some next year as well.
Great plan, just think someone else will trump it if Portland wants to play. I think there is a possibility that they may want to stay put, especially if Sharpe is available.
Not much like everyone is thinking. His value is not great and the acquiring team would have to pay him. I’d say 4 or 5 spots at the most.
Is there any scenario where we put our 2023 frp into play? If we already have our big and Sharpe falls to 7, do we bundle 17, any or all of Wood, Gordon, Tate, and 2023 FRP to go get him. If he is as generational as people are saying why not go for the bird in hand rather than hoping we hit another payday next year? We could then look for vets to go ahead and be competitive next year since we wouldn’’t have any reason to tank. Another route would be to use the aforementioned scenario to target Jaylen Brown if somehow the Celtics make him available.
I think it’s too much to ask to have kpj/Martin & 4 20 year old sophomores and 2 rookies to not be bad. If you get “vets” then they play less too. That is 8 guys with about 50 games total averages played. I think you move up in the draft this year if you can while keeping next years pick. If not roll over the nets pick until next season. With 3 picks you could move up or you can trade those guys with Nets picks too (if the player is a bonafide young star, that could be a total of 5 1st round picks and 2 pick swaps) Me personally I hope they keep the nets picks and just use them down the line. The swaps could even be great in 2025 & 2027. You just have to be patient and see it out.
Probably right. I was just spitballing. It really depends on how great you really think Sharpe is. Jalen, KPJ, Sharpe, Chet, Sengun is probably all the foundation pieces you need. You will probably suck next year, but you have FA money in 2024 and don’t really need to add another rookie in the 2023 draft.
If Carroll Dawson was the GM for the other team, we could get a top 3 pick. memories of #8 for Battier.
Why you gotta bring up old s***? Actually, that wouldn’t have been a bad move if Yao and TMAC were ever healthy at the same time. They were in a window of contention and a rookie wouldn’t help too much in theory.
