The Angels are in the playoffs as it stands. The Rangers and M's are 1 and 2.5 games out. Whoever likes the expanded playoffs can kiss my ass.
It really is bulls**t, the baseball postseason was already random enough as is Baseball used to be the marathon sport, 6 long ass months to sort out the deserving. Now we're gonna have 83 win teams getting hot at the right time making playoff runs.
3 division winners and 2 WC team made so much sense that MLB couldn't help themselves from screwing it up. Making a team that wins its division play an extra series is complete bullshit. eta: under the old system, the worst WC team in MLB this season (I know it's early and this is all theoretical) would have 93 wins under the new system, 80 wins gets you in the AL Postseason (89 in the NL)
Here they go again. Angels put Taylor Ward on the IL, recall Jo Adell. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...n-injured-list-recall-jo-adell-from-triple-a/
I'd say there should only be 2 divisions per league as there seems to be one division that is much weaker than the other two quite often with 3. Easy remedy to the weak team issue is to decide the number of byes based on how many teams win 88 games (or some other number). Win 88, and you make the postseason. Win 87, and you are out even if you win a weak division.
I know it's probably a coincidence, but the 12 team playoff began and now there are only 12 teams above 500 when there should be 15.
Blow Up the Angels. Trout and Ohtani for Urquidy and McCormick. And move the Angels to Las Vegas giving the finger to the A's.
I strongly believe divisions should be organized by time zone and that 90%+ of every teams games should be played in their time zone (mountain teams excepted). But I like your idea of having a win threshold for the playoffs.
With only 7 teams total out west that's pretty much impossible. Somebody in the central has to draw the short straw.
Seattle is literally the farthest MLB city from Houston. If you're drawing up divisions to make sense geographical then Seattle would be last on the list to pair with Houston in a division.
Seattle is the farthest team from a lot of places. Lets say we switch places with KC, great for us, but now KC is having to fly to LA, Oakland, Seattle and Arlington, which is basically the same amount of travel we have to deal with when you include our short Arlington flight versus their fairly long one. You also added a lot of airtime to the AL central teams having to fly to Houston instead of KC.
There’s currently 8 teams in PST/MST. If they went to 4 team divisions it would work (with universal DH there’s no difference in AL/NL so moving Colorado or Arizona to the AL wouldn’t be a big deal). But more generally now inter league play could be used more liberally to prioritize game time over league/division affiliation. With expansion I could see something close to this: AL East: NYY, Boston, Baltimore, Toronto AL North: Twins, Tigers, Guardians, White Sox AL South: Astros, Rangers, Royals, Tampa (Nashville) AL West: Mariners, A’s, Angels, Portland* NL East: Mets, Nats, Braves, Marlins NL North: Brewers, Pirates, Phillies, Reds NL South: Cardinals, Cubs, Arizona, Rockies NL West: Padres, Giants, Dodgers, Veags*
Now that they've completely eliminated REAL baseball, there's no reason to maintain the illusion of separate leagues or divisions. Just play a somewhat balanced schedule and seed the tournament by tie-breakers. Heck, why even have a regular season at all? Just have an on-line virtual tournament.
F**k that, the last thing we need is even more weak divisions. You want to largely eliminate the AL/NL and create this major upheaval across the sport, to make life a little easier for 2 fanbases? Flights from the midwest to Houston aren't short, I'm sure all those teams would love to have that added to their regular schedule.
