So is this thing on or what?

Hopefully Mccain will be able to take 90 minutes out of his busy schedule to attend tonight.

I've been waiting all week for this thing, it feels like game 1 of Rockets V Jazz

If McCain ducks the debate like he did in California, it is going to be a disaster for him politically.

But, honestly, I don't think he can win in any situation.....the economic issue is killing him whether he shows up or not.

It is a lose lose for him.

Hey! Isn't there already a thread about this?

He's not going to show and suggest it be moved to next Thursday and reschedule the VP debate to another "undetermined" time (which means never).

admins can delete if there is

I thought we could use a dedicated thread to the actual debate with play by play action when it starts, like the official Rockets V whoever threads in the GARM

Plan B proposed for Mississippi debate

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) -- University of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat said Friday morning that if GOP nominee McCain does not show for the first presidential debate at the school in Oxford, the format may include members of the audience to submit questions to the moderator, Jim Lehrer.

Workers put the finishing touches on the debate stage at the University of Mississippi on Thursday.

Lehrer would then pose the questions to Obama. It would take on a kind of town hall format, according to Khayat.

Khayat said he will recommend that to the Debate Commission, which would make the final decision.

The debate was to focus on foreign policy and natural security, but the economic crisis is likely to be a dominant issue as well.

Whether McCain intends to participate is up in the air, but Democratic opponent Barack Obama said it's still on as far as he's concerned.

Obama will fly to Oxford on Friday, according to his campaign.

On Thursday, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said he expects both candidates to attend Friday night's debate, even though McCain has said he'll only go if Congress reaches a deal on the bailout.

"I expect there to be a debate tomorrow night [Friday] and I look forward to it," Barbour told reporters at the University of Mississippi.

Barbour said he had not been in direct contact with either of the candidates and he did not have any "inside information."

Debate planners got a big surprise Wednesday when McCain called for postponing it. The university has invested millions of dollars preparing for it.

McCain said he was suspending his campaign to focus on the $700 billion bailout proposal. His campaign said he would attend the debate if Congress passes legislation by Friday morning. iReport.com: Do you think the debate should go on?

Obama's campaign has argued over the past couple of days that both attending the presidential debate and working on the bailout plan can be accomplished and the event should go on.

"I think we can do both of these things at the same time. The next president is going to face multiple crises on the same day," Robert Gibbs, Obama's top adviser, said on CNN's "American Morning."

"We've got a presidential debate scheduled. We've got a stage. We'll have an audience. My guess is we'll have a moderator and at least one of the presidential candidates," Gibbs said. Watch what Gibbs says about the debate »

Khayat, appearing with Barbour on Thursday, said university officials have been in contact with both campaigns but only in regard to "what we have to do to be prepared for tomorrow night."

Richard Howorth, the mayor of Oxford, said debate preparations are under way and organizers are staying positive.

"We think it's going to happen. We're not thinking about the alternative right now, so we're still excited about it and have a really positive attitude," Howorth said.

Howorth acknowledged, however, that they are in a "wait-and-see mode."

"The plans for this forum have been under way for more than a year and a half. The CPD's [Commission on Presidential Debates']mission is to provide a forum in which the American public has an opportunity to hear the leading candidates for the president of the United States debate the critical issues facing the nation," he said.

"We believe the public will be well-served by having all of the debates go forward as scheduled."

I wish McCain would just grow a pair and make a decision instead of leaving everyone hanging.

It's clear that his agenda has nothing to do with putting the country first.

CNN Poll: Obama has higher expectations to meet in debates

A new poll shows Americans think Obama will win the debates.
(CNN) – It appears Barack Obama has higher expectations to meet at Friday night's debate than John McCain does, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll suggests.

According to the new poll, nearly 6 in 10 Americans think the Illinois senator will win the debates, while only 34 percent think McCain will come out on top.

But that's no guarantee Obama will be deemed the eventual winner, CNN's Polling Director Keating Holland said.

"Four years ago, voters thought George W. Bush would beat John Kerry in the debates but Americans who watched the debates generally thought Kerry was the winner," he said. "On the other hand, voters thought that Bill Clinton would win the debates in 1996 — and post-debate polls agreed with that assessment."

Obama clearly goes into the first debate with a clear advantage in the issues. The new poll suggests 60 percent of voters say that the Illinois senator aggrees with them on the issues. Voters say they trust McCain more than Obama in international issues like Iraq and terrorism — but Obama has a clear 10-point edge (53-43 percent) on the overriding issue of the day: the economy. (In a CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, 56 percent of Americans said the economy was the No. 1 issue.)

But the two candidates are statistically tied on the question of whether voters feel they possess the personal qualities a president should have (62 percent say McCain does, while 64 percent say Obama does.) And in good news for McCain, voters are also tied on what they care more about in this election — issues or personal qualities. Forty-three percent of voters say that the candidates' leadership skills and vision is more important to them than issues; 42 percent say issues are more important.

Americans are also split when it comes to the vice presidential debate, with 48 percent saying Joe Biden is the likely winner and 46 percent giving the edge to Sarah Palin.

"That's probably an indication that Americans aren't familiar enough with either candidate to be able to handicap their performance in a debate," Holland said.

"What's more important than anything that when we go to Mississippi tonight, both candidates can say that the Congress is working, back in business, that we have an outline or proposal that will protect the taxpayer and save the country from financial Pearl Harbor, as Warren Buffet called it. We are not there yet, but we will get there."

If Obama decides to do this alone, he'll be criticized for exploiting the situation and McCain's absence for political reasons. Very predictable.

Bottom-line is a debate will take place, because the media invest a lot of time and capital setting up the whole thing. Not to mention the work done by Mississippi. When McCain put the debate in doubt on Wed, there was a huge media backlash, including the likes of Fox. With the current anti-bs media attitude, it will not go will for the candidate that has been using the access denied tactic. Note that the tactic only works for Cheney, because he just couldn't be bothered.

McCain is really in a lovely situation right now. He is out of position and pot committed with a weak hand with his last bluff instant-called. We are now at the 5th street. One more round of action before the final showdown tonight.
