true hip-hop was born in the 90's. the meshing of r&b and rap. as stated before, all genres of rap/hip-hop were born in the 90's. even horror rap.

Yeah, the 90s wasnt quite same universal period for everyone like the 80s. More devotees to genres like hip hop and techno, moving away from rock & r&B.

Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Common, De La Soul, Eminem, Common, Outkast, Rakim, LL Cool J, Naughty By Nature, Fugees, Pharcyde, Heavy D, Mos Def, Gang Starr ... there was more than just PURE thugging.

Current rock music is still pretty much just as good as the 90s. The difference is that in the 90s many of the good bands were also extremely popular. I don't see that coming back anytime soon.

The appeal of the 80's (and every decade from the 40's on in popular music) is that there wasn't nearly the same market segmentation as there is now. You didn't have 100 genres of music and sub-genres. Some things may have been less mainstream and had a cult following, but everyone had SOME song they liked on the radio.

    That is..until the 90s.

can we all just realize that everyone isn't going to see these things the same way?

Quite a bit of 90's music was and is damn good. Just because something is on a commercial now doesn't mean squat as to how popular it was or whether it's coming back to some kind of popularity now, necessarily.

Lastly, who is this Montell fellow?
