I don't really understand the point of this list.
Every country has an history, and this history is very important for everyone in this country. I guess if you live in Bangladesh, then Bangladesh would be the "greatest country in the history of the world" for your point of view, because it includes the most aspects that affects your life (I have nothing against Bangladesh, that was just an example).

I don't know if what I just typed was really good english....

Since I don't think the author was Italian (the article is in English, after all) your point does not stand up very well.

I'm not saying this article is wrong or right.
What I was trying to say is that this list of "greatest countries in the history of the world" is different for someone living in a Western country or in a third world country. I'm not so sure the Roman empire affected the life of some tribes in Africa. And I don't think the history of those tribes affected the life of the Italian people. Did the history of England really affect China, for example ? Probably not much, and obviously less than the history of China. So why is England in front of China in the list ? From a western point of view, England was more important, but for the 1.2 billion people (1.3 ? 1.4 ? I lost the count... :D ) living in China, this is definitely the opposite.
I understand that we are speaking on a global scale, but I find it hard to believe that there would be a universal list of "greatest countries in the history of the world".

You can't limit the impact of great civilizations to "current borders", because the concept of a nation-state is a modern idea created by the West.

Anyways, it's a very subjective list, I think it would be difficult to find two people who entirely agree on it.

I'm not sure what the defintion of superpower is. I think it is mostly a subjective term. If you removed China off the map, the world economy would be in for a gigantic shakeup affecting every continent on earth.

...and to this day America avoids many conflicts with certain nations because of China. America has ZERO interest in going to war against China.

Given that China has been influential for something like 5,000 years and America has been around for 230 years, I'd have to give China an edge over America given current influence on the world coupled with historical context.

    where the hell is Japan?

Without them, we'd be driving crappy cars from Detroit and be voided of great video games, and televisions.

    plus great food.

I think you are wrong. This list is sorely need in Germany right now!!! After your country loses a soccer match, you can commiserate in a local bar with your fellow countrymen, at least knowing your country is in The Top Ten of All Time Countries. And if you are form Britian, you can burn down the joint on your way out ;)

Correct! Without Texas the U.S. wouldn't be on the list at all. Texas softened up Mexico for the U.S., otherwise the U.S. wouldn't have California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. The Texans did the hard work, the U.S. army just came to clean up the scraps!

gotta give some props to my wife's country, austria. the austro-hungarian and holy roman empires, the hapsburgs, starting world wars, producing adolph hitler. look at classical music: beethoven, bruckner, haydn, liszt, mahler, mozart, schoenberg, schubert, strauss, wagner, etc. writers and like kafka and leopold von sacher-masoch; thinkers like freud and wittgenstein. what about art nouveau, the vienna actionists and the wiener werkstätte? oh, and their beautiful alpine nation produces the best skiiers in the world.

    so just go ahead and...

    Ooo rock me Amadeus
    Rock me Amadeus...
Rock rock rock rock me Amadeus
Rock me all the time to the top

    Er war ein Punker
Und er lebte in der großen Stadt
    Es war Wien, war Vienna
    Wo er alles tat
Er hatte Schulden denn er trank
    Doch ihn liebten alle Frauen
    Und jede rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

    Er war Superstar
    Er war populär
    Er war so exaltiert
    Because er hatte Flair
    Er war ein Virtuose
    War ein Rockidol
    Und alles rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come on and rock me Amadeus
    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

    Es war um 1780
    Und es war in Wien
    No plastic money anymore
    Die Banken gegen ihn
    Woher die Schulden kamen
    War wohl jedermann bekannt
Er war ein Mann der Frauen
    Frauen liebten seinen Punk

    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

    Come and rock me Amadeus....

Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
    Ja ja ja
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me

    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
    Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus...

Texas would have been ranked #4, but the list said that it had to be a current country. The USA road Texan coattails to end up as number 3. If they had Texas seperated from the US, the US would have ended up at 8 or 9 most likely.

LOL at US being in the top 10.

Ok I was born here and have nothing against this country, thats for the people who think I'm being "unpatriotic".

The US has only been around for a couple of centuries, a small little fraction of time when compared to the worlds history. Moreso, we have only been at the top for about 30+ years, some may argue even less than that.

I mean you guys actually believe we can be considered top ten? There are so many civilizations that have left a greater imprint on this earth, and have bigger legacies that are remembered to this very day.

    The Egyptians. (Egypt)
    The Greek. (Greece)
    The Roman Empire. (Italy)
    The Chinese Dynasties. (China)
    The Ottoman Empire. (Turkey)
    The Aztecs. (Mexico)
    The Mayas. (Central/South America)
    The Indian Subcontinent. (India)
    The British (Colonial). (England)
    Feudal Japan.
    Spain.
    The Arabian Continent.
    France (Napolean).
    Russia (soviet).

That is just to name a few off the top of my head, I am sure I missed a lot that would be considered ahead of the US.

The U.S. may yet be the ultimate demise of civlization, that would be a pretty lasting legacy. Don't sell the American empire short.

Or it savior...the jury is still out.

Every great world power has been a bloodthirsty subjagator until the advent of nuclear weapons. Maybe mutually assured destruction for all is the only way to end mass violence on this planet.

The daily mutilation we see reported in today's news is for sure horrible but it does not compare with the mass murder perpetrated so commonly by past civilzations.
