the dallas cowboys model sure did. same concept.

and how long has it been since the chargers made that trade? what...4 seasons?? i think only 2 teams have won the super bowl over the course of the last 4 seasons.

One thing to keep in mind about the Walker trade. He want to Minny and they stunk it up, making all those picks high in the round picks. Chances are that if Bush goes to another team, they will win more than they lose and those picks won't be high in the round. Walker was overrated, the Vikings overpaid originally, and then combine that with the fact that they stunk after the trade, made those picks just that more valuable.

I don't see any way that the Walker situation can be duplicated with Bush unless Bush were to blow out a knee during training camp. And he's too good to trade for that reason. We gotta take the chance and draft the kid.

I'm not sure why people are so certain that Bush will be a "can't miss prospect". There are plenty of question marks about the guy, starting with his whether he can withstand the pounding to be a 20-25 carry back in the NFL. And actually, it's safer to trade a #1 pick than to keep it. If you keep it, you're basically putting all your eggs in one basket. By trading the pick, you'd spread out your bets. Of course, I'm not taking into account CC's inability to make any semi-decent mid round pick...

From a monetary standpoint, the Texans will fill the seats when they WIN. If Bush comes in, plays at a pro-bowl level, and the Texans go 6-10, do you honestly think Reliant Stadium is going to be packed? Of course not. The fans might come just to see Bush for a few games. But for the long term, you make decisions based on winning games.

I'm torn between trading the pick and getting Bush. Because I'm quite scared that Bush might pull a Ki-Jana Carter, leaving the team with absolutely NOTHING to show for such a crappy season. On the other hand, if he can be Barry Sanders, or even just a perennial pro-bowler, then the Texans future could be quite bright.

I'm not exactly an apologist for Charlie Casserly, but this is why his job is so hard. Undrafted free agents and mid- to late-round draftees become Pro Bowlers while #1 picks become pedestrian contributors.

vick is 25 years old and has already been to the NFC championship game in an offense based on his talents, beat Green Bay in Green Bay in the playoffs in an offense based on his talents at the age of 22. None of those guys had accomplished what he had by the age 24.

I will agree with you on that, the West Coast Offense is not the right system for Vick.

The other thing is that Trent Dilfer played on a team that had Jamal Lewis and one of the greatest defenses we've ever seen. Jim McMahon same deal, great defense and Walter Payton. If Vick wasn't carrying the Falcons who was, Warrick Dunn? He's not even a pro bowler.

Let me throw this out to the Bush guys. I'm just giving scenerios. Lets say Kubiak gets the job, Reeves is McNair right hand man and Casserly is the cap guy. Kubiak has been the oc in Denver since Shannahan has been there. In 11 yrs they have had Davis,Anderson,Portis,Gary,Bell, and Droughns.Out of those rb's and seasons, they have had yrs 0f 2000yds,1800,1700,1500yds 3times, 1200 2 times and 1300 yds. Out of those season, no back was taken above 2nd (Portis). The 0thers were 5th rd and below. Does kubiak have enough juice to tell McNair we could do better with picks and players because he can develop a 1500td back. If thats the case, then what?

In fact the rb taken the higher than 5th with LT other than this yr was Carter in 95 who went #1.

a great rushing attack and avery good defense. not a great defense...the falcons didn't win a championship.

no passing game to speak of.

vick isn't carrying this team. again, if he were it would show up in the stats somewhere. it doesn't. when they need him to pass, he can't. i'm sorry, but i can't call him a great QB. or a pro bowl QB. i think he's amazingly overrated.

but that's just your definition. and yeah atl had a great rushing attack, because part of it was Michael Vick. who cares if they didn't win a championship, who wins a championship before 25, but at the same time, none of those qbs you listed had there teams do what he did by that age.

now the guy has to win a championship for you by the age of 25? you're running out of qualifiers.

But is it Kubiak's "magic" or is it the pretty good o-line Denver have to protect the RB?

Some say its the system, but Portis has had a great yr this yr and so did Reauben running for 1200+yds. Think about this again for anyone to understand what I'm saying. There were 9 1300yds rushers this yr. LT finished 6th and Edge went 4th. The other guys,Alexander 19th, Barber 2nd rd 6th, Johnson 27th and Portis 2nd rd 19th pick. After LT? Rudi johnson 4th rd,Dunn 12th pick,T.Jones 7th,Mcgahee 31st,Droughns 31st,Willie parker undrafted. So what I'm saying is that really good rbs can be found anywhere. The guy record who Alexander broke, preist holmes wasnt even drafted. The only reason Bush won the Heisman and is the so called highest rated prospect is because he returns kicks and punts.

Oh no doubt about that. But there's a reason why Bush is rated #1 across the board on everyone's mock draft--he's the clear cut best player in college. If he was a QB or a wideout, would you make that same argument though? That QBs and WRs can be found anywhere?

Nevermind. You must have not seen USC play.

Every game on tv. I've also watched rbs from Billy Sims to Earl Campbell to Barry Sanders who had 2300 yds 39tds in one season. For someone to say that a player is rated higher than him,LT,Earl,Bo Jackson and some of those other guys are crazy. Marshall Faulk was a fool in college and he had 5 great ys in the pro's.

Okay I apologize. But lets get back to what you were saying: trading Bush for picks/players. Granted, I've thought about that as well but how much would that REALLY help us now? Nothing is ever a 'can't miss' in the NFL, but if you're going to play the numbers, wouldn't you want to place your bet on a player with the highest chance of success? What I'm wondering is what kind of packages you think teams can throw at the Texans that would make McNair think twice. Detroit's #9, Roy Williams, and 2nd and 3rd rounder maybe?

See I like that thinking. For once and hopefully this team has some leverage in a draft pick. Why? Because there are 2 players everyone wants who will go 1 and 2. Check this out:

The Raiders,49ers and Jets really want the top spot. What would you want from the Raiders? How about switch picks a 3rd this yr and a 1st next yr and Porter. Would that work for you? What about 49ers? How about the same except Brandon LLoyd? What about the Jets? What about a signed john Abraham and the picks? The Texans can still get tha back if they feel the need in either Deangelo Williams, Ferguson, or even the corner in jimmy williams from Va Tech. Pair Johnson with Jerry Porter and a 3rd this yr and a 1st next and your offense is better with Porter,johnson/Carr/Davis than it would be with Bush/Carr/Johnson. Or even use some of that fa money and maybe get a downhill back like Lewis,Williams,Edge or even Alexander if you like. Like it or not, this team is more than 1 player away from getting into that 10 win category. Thats what it will take to get to the playoffs in the AFC. Looking at the teams in the dance and a couple not in like SD and KC, how cn the Texans get there. Making the defense stronger would help and helping the offense would also. In todays game everyone has a good back or even a gamebreaker. The differnce in just having those guys are the help around them. The object isn't to just sell tickets because that doesn't work idf you're losing , but to build a team that competes at a high level.
