If Clowney grades out as expected that is who I'd want unless Bridgewater looks stellar at the combine. After that I'd look to trade for a mid-round pick and take my QB there. Ideally that might be Carr. I don't care if he's David's brother. This is Houston, Texas - it's about what YOU have done and what you can build for yourself in life and business, not what daddy or brother did and what frat you were in - this isn't Dallas.

A 1st round QB and DE/34OLB locked into a rookie deal for awhile would pay huge dividends for this franchise.

No thanks. Derek has already made some derogatory comments about the organization. Too much baggage there for him...for the city...and for the organization. I'd stay away.

This will never work. The minute he struggles, he and the franchise will be booed - fair or not. Fans in Houston are no different than fans anywhere else.

There's not really anything positive to say unless it's about Lechler.

His comments were personal..from his personal experience and an axe to grind relating to his brother.

Has the first overall pick EVER been traded?

Most recently in 2001 San Diego and Atlanta swapped 1st overall and 5th overall picks.

Atlanta came out with Vick and San Diego selected Tomlinson.

    Trade down...Maybe with the Browns.

I'm not sold on Bridgewater. All of these QBs have bust written all over them.
Trade down, maybe pick up 2 first rounders
    Take several DB early

I don't know what the statistics say, but in terms of coverage sacks, we have to be dead last. Get some talent back there cause McCain is terrible.

It's a tough call. But I'd def lean towards adding major talent to the pass rush, and here's why:

They already have JJ Watt, and he's likely not going anywhere. So that means that they are about to sink a TON of money into one VERY good player. But what good does that very good player do for you if his play doesn't directly equate to wins? IMO, if you're going to invest so much money on a non QB position, you have to shore up the cast that supports it. (ie: If you spend big $ on a RB, then your OL needs to be good enough to open holes. Big $ money on a WR? You better make sure that you have someone to get him the ball.)

Same goes for DL. If you don't have someone else who can regularly apply pressure, then your one great pass rusher will make several great plays a game - But overall he'll be the main focus of offenses' protections, and will likely have little effect on the final score. Ala JJ Watt this season. Who was a BEAST again on yesterday, and blocked ANOTHER FIELD GOAL. But who won the game? This team cannot afford to waste away another generational talent like they did with AJ.

My goal with this draft would be to shore up my defensive pass rush and the offensive line. Ideally starting with the 1st overall pick in the coming draft.

You also have examples like Eli Manning/Rivers, where the same thing happened, but just technically after the draft started instead of before hand.

Yep, the only reason I didn't throw that one out was because they were traded after the picks were made, since he asked if the first overall pick has ever been traded I figured he meant the pick alone not a specific player.

I was looking for that earlier, and I can't find it! I know I read it...it was earlier this year...maybe in the summer. I google Derek Carr and Texans and everything comes up about his connection to David and David's connection to the Texans.

I believe it. Ryan Mathews similarly soured on the idea of getting drafted by the Texans. The Fresno tree has been poisoned for Houston.

    None of the above

Trade down a couple of picks and take Jake Matthews (RT) out of Texas A&M and cut Derek Newton immediately after.

I'd be interested in trading with St Louis or Cleveland. Depends on what St Louis thinks of Bradford. They already have a great D line, could they bite for the chance to add Clowney? They may end up having two top 10 picks (Washington pick from RGIII trade). That would be an incredible return, but unlikely for now.

Cleveland seems realistic. They should have a pick in the 7-12 range, plus a low to mid 20's pick from the Colts. Cleveland's 1st could possibly result in Matthews/Barr/Khalil Mack/Nix. And the Colts could end up being CJ Mosley/Lewan/Kouandjio/Jason Verrett.

I'd be thrilled to add any of those players if we end up with 1-1. If we keep the pick, I'd be happy with either of Clowney/Mariota/Teddy-5, depending on how they finish the season/bowl games/combine.

Another option would be trading with a team in the 3, 4 or 5 spot. If Minnesota or even Jacksonville feel desparate to get Bridgewater or Mariota they may give up a couple of 3rd rounders to swap picks. I doubt theyd throw in their 2nd rounder, but you never know.

The Texans have stolen the #1 pick from the hands of:
    1. Jacksonville
    2. Atlanta
    3. Tampa

That has to be the greatest thing this team has ever done this season...

    this makes sense

Paying Watt all that money is pointless if you don't have personnel to punish opponents for Watt getting double/triple teamed. A player like Clowney on a rookie deal can serve that purpose.

OTOH if you are weak at qb this may not matter...

Years like this, the #1 pick is more of a curse than a blessing. Unless there is a clear 'can't miss' prospect at #1, there is too much room for error.

Damn, I wish we could've imploded 2 years ago instead of this year.
