If you are going to use that term, I ask you to use it in it's proper form. The Conquistadork. failure to do so is detracting from the honor of this most serious of forums. Domo
you do understand what the difference between stand-up comedy and political satire is don't you? So you think Johnathan Swift was just a comedian and that people only read his stuff to make them laugh???
Here ya go, fellow posters. A way to shut up the trader_idiot. Still no reply from him. Use him as a play toy and he hides like a frightened puppy.
You make an intriguing point here that is lost under all the other muck. While overall the Daily Show has the most well-informed audience, those who depend on the Daily Show as their ONLY source of news are the least informed. Guess who those people are? Young People! Do you get it now? A lot of kids, who have no interest or knowledge about world events, what Jon Stewart because he makes the news entertaining. So I assume that is who you are referring to when you say "people that actually get their political insight from him". TJ, everyone on this board does not get their political knowledge from the Daily Show. What we get from the Daily Show is entertainment...but what the Daily Show also does is to demonstrate how ridiculous the positions held by some are. It doesn't open our eyes, it's just the clearest way of demonstrating how wrong guys like you and basso are a lot of the times. It's so clear, it ends all debate - the proof of which is you can't even address the content, so you attack the Daily Show as a clown show. Well, hate to inform you, but even many media pundits decry the Daily Show as NOT comedy, but as journalism. The Daily Show refuses that label. A study by Indiana University revealed the daily show's content on the political events of the day was comparable to other highly watched news shows. Also, the Daily show has won prestigious journalistic awards, including two Peabody awards, and 2005 NCTE George Orwell Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in Public Language Pretty good for a clown named Jon Stewart, huh?
"Daily Show" viewers are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while O'Reilly's audience is only 24 percent more likely to have that much schooling. Plus, the network noted, "Daily Show" viewers are 26 percent more likely to have a household income more than $100,000, while O'Reilly's audience is only 11 percent more likely to make that much money. So the guy watching Stewart may not only be smart, but may also be rich.
Political comedy has always been about veiled criticism of the ruling power and is a valuable element in promoting the interests of the common man. Historically jesters have been about the only outlet for opposing tyrants. Comedians are almost universally revered while the Kings, Emperors and dictators rarely ever are. From Aristophanes to Jib-jab. Twain, Will Rodgers, Chaplin, Steweart etc. etc.
The Daily Show/Colbert makes up a duo that is held in such high regard by white people that to criticize it would be the equivalent of setting the pope on fire in Italy in 1822. It just isn’t done, in fact it isn’t even considered! White people love to make fun of politics, especially right wing politics. It’s a pretty easy target and makes for some decent humor, but white people are actually starting to believe that these two shows are becoming legitimate news sources. “Oh, I don’t watch the news,” they will say. “I watch the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. You know, studies show that viewers of those shows are more educated than people who watch Fox News or CNN.” White women all consider John Stewart to be the most perfect man on the planet. This is not a debate, it is law. The Daily Show also features guests like John McCain, writers, policy analysts, and actors. It is comforting for white people to see boring celebrities get interviewed in a funny fashion. It fills their need to do something productive, but also not work that hard at it. Take note that Tuesday through Friday during the working week, you can break ALL awkward silences with white people by saying “did you see the Daily Show/Colbert Report last night?” At which point they will start talking until it’s time for you to move on to more interesting activities.
