Exactly! Thaddeus Young wasn't even that good last year, yet people think he could have a Shawn Marion type impact? Based on what? He's not that great of a rebounder and is not a good shooter. If he was anything close to being a Marion type player, Philadelphia -- who is REBUILDING -- would not be looking to unload him. Further, we have Ariza/Battier/Budinger all at the SF spot.. how many are we going to collect? If anything, I would say the SF spot is one of our strongest. There's no sense in possibly marginally upgrading the SF spot at the expense of the C spot, which is a glaring hole. We don't need another 6'8 guy, we need a backup center.
wow I am seriously surprised with what the consensus here is. Thaddeus Young for this year's #14 is a steal.

I remember one home game where a couple of people around the front row by one of the baskets had funny posters that was poking fun at the some of the Sixers. One of them had something like 'Hideous Young' on it which gave Clyde a pretty good little laugh. But enough of that. Thaddeus Young is a stud and is better than Ariza imo but I would prefer a backup center like most of us here. If we could could get him for some combination of a couple of these guys, or heck even all of them: Battier, Bud, Chuck Hayes and/or Anderson for Young I'm with it. I would even throw in a 2nd rounder if we could purchase one from a team. But a backup center is one of the top things we need right now and I ain't giving up the 14th pick if Whiteside, Aldrich, Alabi, or Sanders are still there.
Rep for Egghead I want a backup for Yao as much as the next guy, but there is no way that Aldrich is going to be any good anytime soon. We all know big men take time to mature in the league. Young for #14 is AWESOME, who btw was the #12 pick back in 2007. Looking at it that way, you are getting more value from our highest pick in years (and that's Moreyball). If you have to let go of Shane for a center available @ $7M/year, then you do it. You have Thad and Ariza and C-Bud playing the wing, and that's some good depth and injury insurance. This brings us to who will need a SF with defense and a decent 3-ball? The answer will be New Orleans. With Mo Pete and Julian Wright at the 3, they get an instant bomber in Shane to take passes from Paul. We get a season of Chandler while he works back from the injury to eventually play the pace he was destined to play, back-up C. Brook/Lowry Martin/Taylor Ariza/Young/Budinger Scola/Hill/Jeffries Yao/Chandler Discuss.
Hill's presence decreases the need for Thaddeus. Thaddeus is slightly built 4,not really a 3. He probably will be better than anyone left at 14,but he isn't what we need.
People put too much faith in draft picks. First of all, big men take longer to develop in the NBA, and secondly, any #14 pick will generaly not be as good as Young unless it is a complete steal or sleeper. Even then, it take several seasons for mid to low draft picks to develop. Brooks and Landry took 2 complete seasons to become starting material. I'd say that Budinger is an exception, however he was a sleeper/steal, which is highly unlikely any big man in this draft will be. Even Favours and Cousins are considered projects. How about Hasheem Thabeet? There's another example. By this logic, YES, Young would be a win now move. If we draft Aldrich or Whiteside, etc etc... They will not contribute immediately like many of you think they will. By trading for Young, we have better pieces to trade for the back up C we need. Either Ariza or Battier bcomes expendable.
Young would be a win now move, but he is still only 21 or something. By no means has he reached his ceiling. I am not convinced that Trevor/Shane will get it done. Jeff Green imo would fit like a glove though, as opposed to Thaddeus.
I was on the Sixers realgm board again. The same reliable source Sixerfan1976 posted this two things to "keep an eye on" today are: Thad to Utah for Kosta Koufus and pick #9. Thad to Memphis for Haddadi(sp?) and pick #13 Assumuing Aldrich with either pick..but I guess its possible they target someone else too if Aldrich is gone. Not sure if Aldrich is the contigent there. Sounds like Collins really likes Lou and feels he can get Lou to become a better defender which will give him more minutes potentially. Foster for Kapono still out there too..but that doesnt necessarily have to happen tonight since no picks are involved. http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1018431&start=720#wrap ---------------------------- So, the Rockets have said they aren't going to draft by need. They are going BPA. Assuming Cole Aldrich is available @ 14, would yall do Andersen + 14th for Thad Young? Thad is only 22 years old w/ a ton of upside.
14 + Andersen for Young? Let me think...probably yes. Is Thad just as good or better than the wings you could take if they were there at 14? (Babbitt, George, Hayward, etc)
I agree with your sentiments on Thad Young, but what makes you think so highly of Aldrich? I'm not being argumentative, I'm just ignorant on the guys skills, as I did not watch much college ball this year. Is there a current NBA player you could compare him to?
