I had forgotten the interceptions against Oregon. What I do remember clearly from that game was dropped balls, and even more so, that lackluster defense cost us that game. Simms made the plays to win but the rest of the guys did not. If I remember Roy W. was also nursing an injury or something else that distracted him. The receivers as a group were aweful that game. I also agree that we know less how Simms will react to pressure. But I think our chances of winning the national title are greater with Simms than Major. Our chances of being worse are greater with Simms as well, but we should be setting our sites for #1 not playing it safe for a 9-2 season. Major had his chances, and he did not perform that well against Stanford or OU last year, nor NCS the year before. He was good, but never seemed like a guy who could carry a struggling team. Simms, while in certain ways is riskier to go with, gives us a bigger potential payoff, and so far so good.
ill buy that college politics played a role but really i know every coach tries to put the spin of a player doesnt lose his job if he gets hurt, but what if the replacement is AWESOME, like aaron brooks in NO, or simms at UT(the aggies have a good defense and we torched them 43-17) the oregon game he was very good in fact we shouldve won, our freshman receivers dropped 3 straight td passes to thwart our last drive and i personally am very impressed with Simms's development, like last weekend against tech he didnt force anything but he made throws that major couldnt have even dreamed of trying like there was one on the left sideline that he completed vs techs linebacker and safety playing a tight zone right in the area dont get me wrong i like major, but i get so sick of hearing he shouldve started or simms sucks when it isnt his fault something happens just because people are major loyalists I felt like either qb could lead us to the promised land and i just wanted mack to name a clear cut starter this yr, which he did, and to me he made the RIGHT DECISION. I cant wait till next weekend, i have one thing to say: REVENGE WILL BE SOOOOOOOO SWEET!!!!
How can anyone say that UT wouldn't be able to win a national championship with Applewhite? He's better than what, 85% of all college QBs? What's with all this "he's the man if you want to go 9-2" crap. That's silly. If a QB of Applewhite's caliber can't take you where you want to go in College football, your team just isn't good enough.
ill buy that college politics played a role but really i know every coach tries to put the spin of a player doesnt lose his job if he gets hurt, but what if the replacement is AWESOME, like aaron brooks in NO, or simms at UT(the aggies have a good defense and we torched them 43-17) Or for that matter, Major Applewhite. He actually stole the starting job of Richard Walton when Walton hurt himself. dont get me wrong i like major, but i get so sick of hearing he shouldve started or simms sucks when it isnt his fault something happens just because people are major loyalists I agree that the Simms-hating is silly. The QB controversy is certainly not Simms' fault -- if anything, it's Mack Brown's or just a plain bad situation. Both the QB's have done everything right in this situation. I think the frustration stems from two things: (1) Simms' early season struggles last year and the startling contrast against ULaLa. Simms starts, we're losing. Major comes in, blows ULaLa away. A part of that was the offense, a part was the jitters, but Simms didn't help himself by throwing an interception returned for a TD to start many of his games. (2) Major just become an enormous fan favorite his first two years. Beating Nebraska twice, his performances against A&M & OU, the last-second drives, all the hits he took, etc, just made him really popular. Then a player who's big credentials were "hype" and "name" comes in and takes the job from possibly the Big 12's best offensive player based on potential. I think the way it all played out just rubbed lots of people the wrong way -- myself included. So I can understand why people prefer either Major or Chris, but that doesn't excuse the people who blast Simms on every bad play. We had a group of fans at the UH game behind us that were just as annoying the opposite way. Every good play, they were yelling how "Major couldn't do that" and "Do you still want Major" to nobody in particular. Of course, they were drunk. That crap (on both sides) is just stupid.
I think that worse QB's have won the national championiship, like the Vols with Tee martin. Or perhaps even the Sooners last year. IMO, Heupel was ALOT like Applewhite. But I don't think Applewhite's good enough to win it for you. I think Simms could potentially be the type that can. I actually believe that Major Applewhite was the better QB at the beginning of this season. But at the same time, he was maxed out in terms of potential. Brown took the risky approach, but the one with the most reward. Start the guy who's not quite as effective now, in hopes that doing so will make him far better by the end of the season. Not safe, but could pay huge dividends. I think Desert Scar nailed Applewhite's primary failing on the head. The guy just wasn't good at the mid-range game. He could beat you with the bomb or with the dink... but if you shut those down, he was in trouble. Simms has enough arm to get it to the receiver in time. That's why I think Brown made the right decision.
Do you really think OU would have won the national title with anything less than phenomenal play by Heupel??? Heupel, was not top 85% he was top 97%, and made a # of exceptional plays (KSU, A & M) that without them the Sooners would have not won their title. If you look at the Sooners this year you can tell they are not near the team they were last year, and the difference is having a great QB versus merely a good one. Also, a very likely reason T-Martin won his national title was that Weinke, an even better QB, got injured. You can't underestimate the value of a great QB in college or pros. Sometime you can win with a good one, but it sure helps to have a great one (Heupel, Weinke). Further, I don't think UT has the overwhelming defenses that the recent Sooners, Seminoles or Vols title teams have, they are going to need more from their offense to win it all IMO. In short, by every indication Simms is now the better player than Major. Major is not the 1st good senior player who simply has been beat out by an underclassman who gives you a better chance for the grand prize.
But they do have Derrick Johnson . In all seriousness, he's the most instinctual linebacker I've ever seen. At any level. For any team. He's frickin' amazing.
That kid does look outstanding, potentially as effective as another Derrick who is a smallish burner LB (Brooks). They really need to unleash him and DD, but can't rely on them solely (see below). BTW-who is that jackass Sooner frosh NT from Texas, the Horns could use him (also see below). He is good but I really hope they pancake his over and over next weak for his lack of foresight and for going to the dark side. The front 4 has not provided much of a pass rush so far against mediocre (at best) pass oriented competition (e.g., Houston, T-Tech). I think it will work against the Sooners because Heupel is gone, but I would hate to rely on the blitz to consistently get pressure on Grossman or Dorsey and respective their offenses, that is what worries me right now.
Wasn't Simms the one sucking ass to start the game (or did major get the start and then got replaced by simms but then he sucked too so we went back) and major the one who led the team on two touchdown drives in the fourth to get us the lead before the D let stanford score at the end. I realize the controversy is over (and I'm glad) and that no amount of arguing will make Applewhite start but I would at least like people to give Applewhite his due and realize that Simms did not start based on merit but should keep starting now that he is doing good. Or maybe I should just make shanna my official spokesman for all things Simms/Applewhite.
Desert Scar, you're refering to Tommie Harris. Basically, this guy was a lock to go to Texas, but certain circumstances prevented that. If you want to know the whole story, give me your email address.
In the Stanford game, Simms was like 5 for 8, 1 td, o ints. Major underthrew 2 passes that were intercepted. WEe still would have one if the D could have held them in the end.
Why did Simms not continue if he had those stats. I was watching the game on the South Mall and all I remember is an offense that didn't freakin budge (I remember the Simms td but not how it happened) until like the fourth when we started throwing while trying to catch up.
gr8-1, sure I'd be interested to here the details (desert_scar@hotmail.com) on Tiny Hairs or whatever. I hope his ass gets razzed bad for 4 years, he must be a commie or something . I am not trying to diminish Major. He is a very good college QB and did well for the Horns. But Simms already looks better and he is still learning in quick strides. The job was not handed to him, if it were politics he would have started as a frosh, it simply took him 2 years to become better than Major. No shame to Major at all. It is great to know if Simms takes a mean hit Major can step in though.
Hey gr81, What is the scoup on the Harris kid, my e-mail is in the above post. I hope they stomp his butt all day long.
What's the scoop? I heard Harris didn't have the grades. OU offered with the hope he would qualify which he did. Harris regrets signing with OU and wants to play for UT with Derrick Johnson. DJ and Harris made a pact to play football at the same school. BTW, DJ's teammate since the 8th grade is OU's true freshman center Vince Carter. Harris cannot play at UT cause Stoops will not/would not allow it.
If he didn't make the grades I guess I shouldn't have any ill-will for him. Damn those academic standards (kidding OU folks, where is RM95, he is a Sooner right?). Still hope Harris never has a good game in Dallas however.
My bad . , my brain missfired when I was writing, maybe someone snuck one of those California brownies in my lunch.
