I was at last year's Michigan vs Nebraska Alamo Bowl, and had a lot of fun. This year I'm hitting Joel's in Flatonia for some BBQ on the way there and then drinking my weight in Shiner at the game. Good times...

    Really?

The Longhorns have about 50 more years of history than the Cowboys and have made themselves one of the most storied and successful programs in college football out of the hundreds of teams.

The cowboys are no more "america's team" than the Chicago Bears or the Raiders or any other team that has a national following.

Historically they blow the cowboys out of the water, not vice versa.

I would say however, there are more Cowpoke fans than Longhorn fans Nationally. I was at Giants stadium for a Giants-Cowboys game and was surprised at how many Cowboy fans there were. I met some from New Hampshire and even Maine of all places. I asked them why they were Cowboy fans and #1 reason - The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. #2 reason the Star on their helmets. Go Figuire!

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. (don't want to derail this thread anymore than I have already)

I've seen a lot more Bears, Packers, Patriots, Eagles, Redskins fans not in their hometowns than I've ever seen Cowboys fans.

I hope so too; same for all of the Big 12 teams.

It all went downhill after that QB sneak. I bet Texas never tries that again with Colt.

Okay, since you are egging me on here...

As much as I hate to admit this, the Cowboys are THE preeminent team in the NFL. They have won the most Super Bowls (6). They hold the record for the most consecutive winning seasons and the most 10+ win seasons. They have the most postseason appearances, most NFC Championship apperances and the most Super Bowl appearances. They are one of the most marketable teams in all of sports.

The Longhorns aren't the most or best of anything. Historically, they aren't even the best team in the Big XII. That honor would go to Oklahoma and their 7 national titles. Other teams that are at least as great if not better than Texas are Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Tennessee, Miami, and Nebraska.

Now, why can't you just agree that you are wrong.

The Texas Bowl matchup intrigues me, and I just might check it out in person. I think KSU and Rutgers might make for an entertaining football game.

I'm pretty sure the post you replied to was made in jest. Then again it is early in the morning.

I think the Alamo bowl will be great for Texas.....sure they are dissappointed that they didn't have a better year, and how funny that Florida got into the title game...if UT won out they would be playing OSU again.

Anyway, a LOT of UT fans will be able to attend the game, and it should be fun in San Antonio with all those fans roaming around, they will proabably sell the game out.

It is the best case for UT....as no one really wanted to go to the Gater bowl.

Uh, the Longhorns are the 3rd winningest team in the 125 plus year history of college football in terms of both all time wins and winning percentage, just behind Michigan and Notre Dame. They have 4 national titles (all in the modern era) and dozens of conference titles aside from numerous other honors. Like it or not (and I suspect "not" is your answer) they are among the most pre-eminent (and "marketable") programs in college football history.

Also The cowboys have won only 5, not 6 super bowls (tied with San Francisco and Pittsburgh), and their history actually pales in comparison to many teams like Green Bay and Chicago that were winning championships LONG before the cowboys even existed.

If you count NFL championships along with Super Bowls in the pre-Super Bowl era than Green Bay has 3 Super Bowls and 6 additional NFL championsips on top of that. The Bears have 6 NFL titles & one Super Bowl too.

The highest winning % all time is held by the Miami Dolphins, followed by the Bears, followed by the Cowboys. In terms of alltime wins, the Cowboys rank behind the Bears, Browns, Cardinals, Lions, Packers, Giants, Eagles, Colts, Raiders, Steelers, Rams, 49'ers, Redskins.

ok, I think I'm qualified to respond to this subject given that I'm a longterm DIEHARD cowboys fan (I was born in Houston, but grew up the vast majority of my childhood in Dallas starting from 7), and then I'm also a UT alum

and honestly Sam, basically it just sounds like you dislike the Cowboys and you're only knocking them based on the fact they haven't been around as long as some other NFL franchises (maybe cause that's the only thing you can knock them on). we have the most SB appearances, most NFC championship appearances, and of course tied with the most SB wins. all of this in a lot less time than some of those other franchises, as you stated. I mean think about it, wouldn't you rather do MORE in less time than be around for a long time and not do ****? IMO it's all about *percentage* of success, not just how long you've been around. all those teams with more all-time wins, yet we are third in winning %...I'd truly rather take that

and yeah, jackfruit is most definitely right that the Cowboys are more popular nation-wide than the Horns. but to be fair, that's mainly due to the fact that cheering for a certain college usually only comes from a very specific connection and reason, so that subject is pretty irrelevant to me one way or the other. but just think about how many *non-connected* Horn fans there were around the country before the last couple of years...not that many

but regarding your whole list of NFL teams that you claim is more popular than the Cowboys around the country, that smells like BS to me. unless you're mainly talking about the Northeast part of the country, since every team on your list is around there. now I'm sure you'll come back and say 'no, Im talking about every state', but I just flat out don't believe that. I guarantee you Oklahoma and Arkansas like the Cowboys more than any other NFL team by a longshot. Arizona and California too...actually almost every state west of New Mexico I would say. every time we play the Cardinals, at least 25%, if not more, of the stadium looks like Cowboys fans. and California I know for sure, because I actually go there at the very least once every two years, everywhere between the LA area and the Bay area. dude, the Cowboys used to have their training camp in Thousand Oaks for quite a few years, if you didn't know. and hell, let's not even restrict it to the central and western parts of the country, take it from ROCKET RICH NYC himself and what he said

I'm not knokcing them - I really don't care that much aobut the NFL nearly as much as I did when the oilers were around.

The point I'm making is this: Jackfruit thinks that the Longhorns in football have not established a legacy that is even on the same plane as that of the Cowboys. That's just untrue. In a MUCH larger pool, over a MUCH larger time period, the Longhorns have made themselves one of the icons of the college football landscape and been unbelievably successful for a substantial period of time.

Anyway, the Cowboys aren't first in winning percentage - they're third. And they have been eligible for every single super bowl (as well as several NFL championship games - which they could never win), - so the "less time" excuse doesn't fly there.

It doesn't smell like BS to me. How many Cowboys jerseys do you see on a Sunday afternoon in NYC? Almost none. Bears, skins, eagles, Packers, Pats outnumber them by a wide margin. I've seen more than one UT bar though.

yeah, and I guarantee you Maine has more Patriots fans, Connecticut has more Giants fans, Iowa has more Bears fans......so?

That's because they're geographically situated to take advantage of smaller western and plains states that don't have football teams at all (Ok, NM, Ark). I guess you can say the Cowboys have a huge national followign because they get higher TV ratings in Wyoming, but since Wyoming only has a few hundred thousand people, eh, who cares?

The fact that the Cowboys are a regional team is inconsequential, really. I mean you see freaking Cheeseheads in every GB game no matter where it is. Green Bay has like 100,000 people in it. That to me is impressive.

Meh, the Cowboys are like the Lakers. They've got (t-shirt) fans everywhere. They dominated their respective leagues in the past, but those days are over. The college team that comes the closest is Notre Dame football.

If your childhood bedroom was decorated by nothing but Cowboys, Lakers, and NY Yankee posters, odds are we won't agree much about sports.
