WHAT THE HELL? 1 Point Safety? This Game is quickly rising up the UCR scale (unintentional comedy rating)
This explanation that Swanny just gave is still giving me a headache. 1-point safety? I thought I was pretty well-versed in the rules of football, but I'm stunned.
The A&M player recovered the kick outside off the endzone, retreated into the endzone, and was tackled. Any safety on a PAT results in a one-point safety. 44 yard Mangum FG 16-13 UT
Extra Point Attempt: Texas' placeholder botched the hold Texas' kicker kicks it into the lineman... Aggie player picks it up at the 3. He got hit...and he fumbles into the endzone. A&M falls on it and recovers in the endzone. Safety.
One point safety. If all of that happened on a FG attempt, it would be a 2 point safety. For a PAT, it's a 1 point safety. It was the correct call. Just VERY rare. Man, if A&M would just throw the ball downfield instead of all the long developing 'trick' plays, they might actually win this game.
So is the college rule for extra points different than the pros? I think it was yesterday there was a blocked extra point in teh Colts game and the refs immediately blew it dead as both teams were chasing it down. Any ways very weird rule but I'm guessing the officials know more than myself and the announcers.
i"m going through the online version of the NCAA rule book and I can't find anything about this rule. i thought once you kicked the ball, if it didn't go through the uprights, it was a dead ball. i can't find a counterargument in the text for this, though apparently its true in the NCAA.
In college, you can return a blocked extra point for two points. After a block, it's still a live ball like a punt. In the pros, you cannot - so once it's blocked, it's dead. It's a shame this game had to get in the way of ABC's interviews with other coaches. That's ****ing ridiculous - that's why they have halftime. That's pretty disrespectful to run over like ten minutes of the game with interviews with Urban Meyer and Tommy Tubberville. And they're going to interview Stoops too, that's great.
I remember in '99 Lee Jackson returned an int on a bad A&M PAT (the holder bobbled the ball then threw it into the air) for 2 points. Either the rule has changed or its 2 points for a return (instead of 6) or 1 point for a safety (instead of 2).
Yeah, it's funny that these idiot announcers still haven't figured it out yet. They keep going on and on about what a 'strange' call it was but it was the CORRECT call. The more they talk about it, the dumber they sound.
