Good move for Tx State....You have to start somewhere.

Can't help but think that the increased scholarships, more TV time, and better name recognition nationally will greatly help.

Dang so how many Texas schools is that in Div 1 football?

UT, aTm, TCU, Tech, UH, Rice, North Texas, Texas State, UTEP?, Baylor, SMU, UTSA...

    Is that all of them?

My brother is a SWT alum and former football player. He's not crazy about it. He sees North Texas and all of their "success" and sees the same future for Texas St. They're a mediocre 1-AA team right now and have enough trouble recruiting central Texas as it is. Add UTSA to the mix and it gets harder to recruit. Now, they'd be attempting to go after the same players UH, Baylor, TCU, etc are going after. I don't see it being good, football wise, for either TxSt or UTSA.

In UTSA's case...you want to start from scratch in the FBS (no, 1 season in the FCS does not count)? Are you nucking futs? Exactly how long do you plan to suck for? I sure hope Larry Coker has a good guaranteed contract. He'll be lucky to win a game.

I get why they want to do it. I just don't foresee huge success...unless playing someday in the Humanitarian Bowl or the New Mexico Bowl or the Beef O'Brady's Bowl is some kind of goal.

Again, if by DI you mean FBS, then yes.

If you really mean DI, then no. Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, Texas Southern, and Prairie View A&M also play division 1 football at the FCS level.

Coker will put us on the map, maybe not right away, but let's say hypothetically that we get off to a good start and are able to be successful. Recruits will look at an upstart program doing things, and will obviously get san antonio talent. The upside is so much better than being stuck in southland where no recruits want to go. A new program, in FBS is much more attractive than that

    North Texas?

Pffft....SWTSU is a much better place to go to school, much more attractive.

It won't happen overnight, but there are plenty of players in Texas to recruit from and the WAC is not exactly the top of the heap.

They will compete, just gonna take time.

    Eat em up CATS !

It may take some time for Tx State to compete in football, but they will compete in the other sports much sooner.

Strictly speaking of men's sports....baseball team is always solid, and for the men's bball team is finally headed in the right direction. Lots of talent on their roster this year.

I've heard that West Texas A&M and maybe Midwestern state will move from D2 to D1-AA into the Southland.

SWTSU and UTSA are the biggest schools by far populationwise that are not at D1-A level so it makes sense.

UT-Arlington wants a team to field by '13 or '14 and they would probably stay in Southland.

Sun Belt and Sam Houston have expressed interest. Not sure if I like that or not cause its not like we are dominating the D1-AA level. It would give North Texas an in state conference rival though.

Lots of things happening maybe HBU could get a D1-AA football team going one day. Looking at 21 D1 level schools if West aTm & Midwestern St move up and UTA & HBU got theirs going by 2014. Pipe dreams on alot of this BTW

CU was the school that originally changed to this current abbreviation form and it was because California state schools were more well as UC. Surrounding schools decided to do it as well, except for TExas

Not sure why DU did it as well.

UC - Davis had been the largest FCS school but Texas State has surpassed them. They're still a little ahead of UTSA though. Both schools passed Georgia State recently.

I think SHSU recently completed a feasabilitly about moving up and the recommendation was that they remain in FCS.

Not talking about djohn, but there have been a handful of really delusional Roadrunner fans going on WAC message boards claiming that they're the next Boise State and how they're going to do exactly what South Florida did and be in a BCS conference within 3 years.

As they should. There's no benefit to moving up. Continue to struggle as a football program and get no more attention on the successful basketball team (though who knows with the departure of Coach Marlin). The Sun Belt sucks in pretty much everything.
