Youth soccer leagues should do the same.

That's so naive. A coach often times has much more influence on a kid than any parent or teacher. A coach controls what these kids covet most in school, playing basketball. A coach is also a teacher and if he cared anything at all for their futures he should be as interested in the grades these kids are pulling as he is their jump shots.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have them practice there half-court defense rather than continue to press an already demoralized team?

Am I the only one that had to re-watch the video because I thought it said "McYates" on their jerseys?

Or was that just the High School All-American Team?

    For those interested:

Yates plays Sharpstown tonight on CSS...Comcast channel 129 at 8pm. Sharpstown is one of the better HISD teams they'll face, for what that's worth.

    Woah, just read this.

I don't really see the reason to defend Yates. Basically it's like an adult playing pickup basketball with a little kid, and play him "seriously" to "work on his game".

Look, it's not really wrong. There's something to be said about getting a kick out of beating the crap out of VASTLY inferior basketball players. Maybe they get a jolly out of that.

Yates is running Sharpstown out of the building.

Brandon Peters and Joseph Young, son of UH assistant and Phi-Slamma-Jamma's Michael Young, are ballers. Peters can jump out of the gym. He has already throw down 3-4 dunks, including a reverse alley-oop. Kid's got a future at Western KY.

Interesting that Young spurned his father's alma-mater, where he currently coaches, to attend Providence. Big East basketball reigns supreme.

They average 119 points/game, and are widely considered to be the #1 high school team in the nation.

Also, almost every player on Yates has a Von-Hawk. Pretty sick.

It would eat up clock if they ran sets and quit pressing. No business playing basketball?? That's just a stupid statement. It's high school basketball.....

Yates captures state record in win
Lions break 100 points for eighth straight game

In an effort to level the playing field and get a solid look at his bench, Yates coach Greg Wise did not play starters Brandon Peters and Elton Roy for the entire game against Davis at Delmar Fieldhouse Wednesday afternoon. The other starters: Joe Young, Darius Gardner and Alex Davis were limited to eight minutes each the entire game.

Unfortunately, the gesture by the Lions (26-0, 14-0 District 21-4A) made no difference against the Panthers, who have not won a game all season.

Led by senior Chris Hill's game-high 22 points, Yates' cadre of reserves steamrolled over Davis in rout to a 127-26 win to close out the regular season with its undefeated streak at 50.

“That's a nice number, but we're looking forward to trying to get it at the end of the year, because we know if you lose one game now, you're out,” Wise said. “The number we're looking for is to be No.1 in the state, No.1 in the country and being undefeated for the season.”

By all accounts, the Lions rotation players convincingly demonstrated their ability to take up the slack when called upon. Gary Jackson finished with 21 points and Darveon Trahan and Shuneric Martin each added 19. Steven Sotelo paced the Panther with 8 points.

“They (reserves) did about what I thought they would do,” Wise said. “I didn't play the starters much because I didn't want us to pick up bad habits from telling them to walk it up and do what we don't normally do. I think they did a good job tonight of working the offense.”

From the outset, everything went Yates' way. Despite putting its signature full-court press on the backburner, the Lions ran away to a convincing 46-10 advantage by the end of the first quarter using quickness on the defensive end to rack up steals and force turnovers. Davis, unable to find a rhythm on offensive, got eight of its 10 points from Sotelo in the opening period.

In the second quarter, the Panthers were only able to produce four points for the entire eight minutes of play. In the first six minutes of the period, Yates tallied 27 unanswered points before Davis connected on its first basket on a mid-range jumper by Leroy Ramirez.

Jackson stole the ball with 1:59 left in the third and hit the go-ahead layup on the other end to give the Lions its eighth straight 100-point game, breaking the state record of seven straight set by Hardin-Jefferson in 1991-92. Yates finishes the regular season with 19 games with 100 points or more.

With post-season play slated for next week, the Lions will begin its quest to repeat as 4A state champions.

“We're looking forward to the playoffs so we can play hard and do what we want to do in terms of playing hard for the entire 32 minutes,” Wise said. “We feel good about getting in a few good practices and then being ready to go.”

There are lots of really good b-ball players out there .... lots .... and this High School team just crushed them all. Is this a prep school all-star team or something ?

What's the big deal? I saw the Coogs' football team beat Oklahoma State by a score of 100-6. Yes, 100 for UH and 6 for Oklahoma St., which is an even bigger margin, percentage wise (I think!). That was at the Astrodome, back in the days when UH was a real power.

    And the football was square!

    jk.

I remember the run and shoot days in the 90's when Klingler was putting up 700 yards of offense by himself and the offense was putting up 1000 yards. lol. That's what this Yates team reminds me of. But for every Andre Ware, there could be a potentail Miami Hurricanes team lurking to slap 'em down...

I think they've nearly lost one or two games, but they were to out-of-state schools.

They're only crushing HISD schools which in general are just terrible. Yates is great, but the HISD schools are just not that good.

DAVIS High School was coached before the current coach by Ronnie Courtney, who took TJ Ford's Willowridge to a State Championship and then coached TSU. Davis isn't as good as it was during those years he coached them. Yates' Lions are just TOO ATHLETICALLY GIFTED. Compare their heights and weights to the Davis players.
