truthfully, i would not have been outraged about the call had the flag been tossed immediately (in a timely manner)... but the fact that the penalty was called nearly 45 seconds after the end of the play made it ludicrous.
Haven, I was about to take that piece of s*** ref out back and kick his a***, myself if I had the chance. The refs have hated our guts for the most part this year, don't ask me why? And who would've thunk 3 unbeatens go down? ME. There might have been 8 unbeatens, but I could've told you that in my estimation OU/Miami/Va Tech were the only worthy ones. Georgia had been taking care of a WEAK SEC, ND had been doing it with smoke and mirrors, and Va Tech has no passing game. OSU will lose-you can count on it. They too are not undefeated caliber, sorry chuckie and BK, but if they run the table I don't even think they are guaranteed the NC spot over say Texas-if Miami loses of course. Play a quality team outside of the horseshoe then come talk to me, and a mediocre wisconsin team doesnt count.
gr8-1: That's a pro rule. The rule in college is that you can block until the ball's in the air. Guess what? The ball wasn't in the air. No way that was a penalty. Probably an impossibility.
My thing is, what did that guy see from 20 yards away that the line judge didn't see? I guess you can see more, in a way, but that was a judgement call from a guy that was too far to make that call, imo. Texas wins the game with less drama if that call wasn't made.
Elvis - That is a long standing tradition @ Memorial Stadium. No matter whatthe outcome, the opponents are given a standing ovation as they leave the field
Congrats Longhorn fans. It was an awesome game, to bad we had to come out on the short end. I met quite a few UT fans Sat and they were very cordial. The stadium was rockin all night and both teams put on one heck of a show. That was the first game I have seen Simms play this year, but the guy was awesome, not to mention that he has a stud receiver in Williams. Were probably another year away from getting back to where we need to be and hopefully the younger kids will learn from this year. Good Luck the rest of the way, hope you get to the Fiesta Bowl. By the way, the call on Williams was a gift
No Greg Davis did not win it for Texas. Chris Simms won it for Texas. The defense won it for Texas. When Simms looks bad, Davis looks bad. Since the Simms jockists can't believe Golden Boy chokes under pressure, they like to blame Davis, forgetting Davis was the same offensive coordinator that called plays for Ricky Williams and Major Applewhite. Davis called the same plays he always does. This time Simms stepped up.
DV- How about a friendly wager? I'll bet Texas loses as many games (or more) than OSU for the rest of the schedule. Again OSU doesn't write the schedule they just play it. Glad we have PSU, Minnesota, WSU and Micigan at home, but it doesn't take anything away that we are still undefeated. And no way does Texas jump over OSU if they win out. We have the quality win over WSU (assuming they don't lose) and don't have the negative point for a loss, and you'll be behind us in the polls. So won't happen.
Thanks ROCKSS. You know what always amuses me? After a supposedly terrible call, there's a nearly fail-safe way to tell if it was really that bad. If both sides fans are saying the right call would have been to benefit their team, then odds are it was a toss up. If 1 side is screaming foul, and the other side is saying "it could have gone either way..." then it was a bad call. From what I've seen, all but the most rabid Husker fans are saying it could have gone either way. 95% of Horns fans think it was complete bull****. Never noticed that Husker fans are all that much more reasonable...
We all know Simms is a choker in big games, but since he is a student-athlete who is not paid, he cannot be booed or criticized, only praised till he can't breathe... Davis is an easy target for Simms jockists. He's a paid employee who's been calling basically the same plays since '98. He doesn't have the personality of Mack Brown either. Notice how when Simms has a huge game, the Simms jockists don't go after Davis. Texas ran the same plays against Nebraska that they did against OU (remember the infamous pitch to Benson). This time Simms stepped up. Simms did his part in this tough stretch after OU so I'll give him credit.
Finally got back from Omaha last night at 12:30 AM, after 12 hours of driving. Don't tell the folks at Advantage Rent a Car that we rung up 1,886 miles on their 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. Not a bad deal considering we paid only $70 for three days (including taxes)! They didn't make a dime on us. The drive up was the longest of my life. It takes you through Fort Worth, Oklahoma, Kansas, and then finally Nebraska. We left Austin at 10 AM on Friday morning, a little later than planned since we went out on Halloween. Stopped in FW for lunch, and then stopped again in Norman for gas. I decided that a stopover at the OU campus was a necessity, so we drove around campus just to see what it was like. We got a lot of middle fingers and dirty looks because of the "Hook em Horns," "Huck the Cornfuskers," and "Simms for Heisman" written in white shoe polish on the rental Alero. Took a few pictures on campus, then headed north through Oklahoma. Oklahoma is by far the crappiest state we drove through. They lowered the speed limits there, and instead of changing the signs, they put duct tape or garbage bags over the old speed limit, and attach the new sign at ground level on the base of the old one. Not to mention that NO street lights or reflectors work in Norman/OKC, so I was basically driving in the pitch dark on I-35 last night. I endured this conversation in a Norman Taco Bell Mullet Woman: "Gordita, what's that?" TB worker: "It's got beans, beef, etc" Mullet Woman: "Beans, what kinda beans? TB worker: "Refried" Mullet Woman: "Is them the beans thats in burritos?" Enough about Oklahoma. Headed north through the rolling prarie of the Great Plains, through Wichita, Kansas (which looked like Paris after what we'd seen). Continued north through Kansas, and got pulled over for going 79 in a 70. My buddy was let off with a warning, but we were still rattled. Towards the border of Kansas-Nebraska, I-135 turns into a small 2 lane road called highway 81, which AAA suggested. As we drove into Nebraska it was pitch black, and nothing but corn fields all around us. I had no cell phone signal, so if the Alero broke down, we'd be screwed. My buddy and I were damn intimidated by the digital signs with your speed that have sirens and flashing lights that go off when you break the speed limit. After a couple of nervous hours of 50 mph speed limit on HWY 81, we saw some sign of civilization as we reached I-80, where the speed limit jumped to 75. We were so happy we played the Eyes of Texas, and finally pulled into our Lincoln, Travelodge at 11:00 PM Travelodge in Lincoln was an absolute disaster. First, the Native American chick at the hotel gave us keys to an occupied room, then told us that the only other room they have "smells like dogs." Sure enough, the room reaked of dog urine, had a broken TV, phone and a dirty sink. We're totally pissed after driving 810 miles, so we call Travelodge corporate office, and they get us a room in Omaha, 60 miles down the road. Ughhh. Went to sleep immediately after considering going gambling in Iowa. Gameday was unreal. Husker fans are the best fans in the nation, bar none. These guys were such gracious hosts this weekend. All I heard was "may the best team win" "good luck," "hope you enjoy Nebraska" etc...I almost lost it at won point, because they were even congratulating us on the win on the way out. We threw down a bunch of beers at Barry's Bar and Grill in Lincoln, Longhorn Central, while watching the Aggies lose. Talked to Kevin and Major briefly, before they did their show at 4PM. Went next door to Arturo's Mexican Restaurant for lunch, which wasn't as bad as it sounds. Drank some Coronas with my lunch, and requested the white mariachi band to play the Eyes of Texas. They happily obliged, and there was a rousing ovation from all the UT fans. We were invited to tailgate outside the stadium with some Husker fans, so I threw down another beer, totalling about 9 on the afternoon, as I walked into the stadium. Took my place behind the UT parents. I was so drunk in the 1st half that I didn' feel the cold weather at all. After looking around at the Sea of Red, I needed to show off my orange. So I took off my coat. I was wearing thermal underwear, turtleneck, and a long-sleeve button down Longhorn shirt. Didn't wear my gloves till 2nd half. The winter hat never came out. The stadium was the loudest I've ever seen, and the place holds its noise in because it's enclosed on all sides. Yes it was cold, but nothing you can't handle. AFter the game, plenty of Husker fans congratulated me on the win as we danced around in the stands and on the sidelines. Took some pictures, headed back to Barry's and eventually back to Omaha. Bad thing: bars stop serving at 1AM over. Wanted to go gambling in Iowa again, but we were too tired. Left Omaha at 11:45 AM Sunday morning, and reached Austin at 12:30 AM last night. Long and grueling trip, but definitely worth it. Hook em.
I think both Chris and Davis deserve credit. 4chuckie, WSU will lose one more game, at least. UO, UCLA, UW, I'd bet alot of money on that. Also, if Cooper were coaching OSU, I would pencil in Michigan over OSU. However he isn't. We sometimes b**** about the lack of respect that UT gets in the polls. Rest assured, a one-loss UT team will be ranked higher then any other one loss team, with the exception being Miami. This season is far from over. I think UT just went through the meat of their schedule and won 3 big games. Not OU big, but pretty big. I think we all had a discussion how UT would do over the last 4 week stretch, and none of us picked them to go 4-0. 3-2 was the most realistic scenario. Simms certainly didn't choke in any of the games. You revisionists better not come with the "those weren't big games" smack. They were. Repeat, ATM and Tech could give UT trouble. I hope the shotgun doesn't go away.
Did the NU player initiate contact? If so, it could have gone 3 ways, huh? No call being the most logical?
