What I find interesting about HeyPee's opening post is simply that he asked the question. How many states in this country have such a pull on people that they want to find a connection? How many states have a history quite like that of Texas? How many were an independent country recognized by nations like Great Britain and France before joining the United States? How many joined by treaty? One could go on. I've always thought it was a trip. How many of you remember the cartoon history "books" we once read in grade school? They were about as politically incorrect (as in bigoted to the max) as would be humanly possible to produce, but very entertaining for a little kid.

Yeah, I understand the power Texas is exerting over heypartner. I'm wondering if he grew up hearing stories about the state at the knee of one of his grandparents. The roots are what I'm wondering about. That sort of experience certainly stuck with me. It's how I found out one of my relatives has his name carved on the San Jacinto monument. It's how I found out that Dallas sucked in comparison to Houston. Important things like that.

I once was baffled when my cousin from New Orleans told me they don't take "Louisiana History" as a required course in junior high...

Go take your life at the Alamo. That's how all those guys went down in the books as Texans ;). But since you married a Texan you have been in a Texan in Texas. That has to count as something.
