I'm apparently just as old and white. I am not in line with Trump.

Even if it kills you. Abbott needs to spend a day in a polling book for 22 hours, and be in charge of signing in those without a mask. Better yet, if he doesn't want to enforce masks, then he should have one mask optional polling station in each county for those who feel the need to go without a mask.

Don't worry, I know just the thing to get him to fall in line.

I’m white and getting pretty damn old. But think just about any Republican/Democrat in the senate and a bunch of them in the house would have done better when confronting COVID than Trump did. I could be wrong but I really think he did almost the opposite of what would have been done.

There are sides, even if some people switch in between them at will and doesnt mean the distribution is equal. The political landscape of the country consists of two divergent political and economic ideologies. It is why you have only two political parties dominating the system.

Anyone (and you may not) that expects the GOP to suddenly support changes that allows every citizen to vote freely in fair elections is naive.

All the GOP have done in recent memory is to use any means that they can to retain power, even if its against the wishes of the majority.

Just wanted to make an important note here: the two party system is cemented by first-past-the-post vote tallying and winner-take-all districts.

Change those, and you change everything.

This deserves its own thread, but any voting system, whether ranked or cardinal or approval, is far better than FPTP.

If suddenly all states used ranked choice voting or approval voting or the cardinal vote, a ton of beneficial side effects would occur. Third, fourth and fifth parties emerge. More difficult to gerrymander. Less negative campaigning and emphasis on coalition building.

    Sorry for the sidetrack.

Just want to point out that if you end up with 3, 4, or 5 political parties, all 5 parties without a dominant position, all the parties jockeying for coalitions, it can become an absolute mess with an unstable government and a merry-go-round of changing leadership from year to year. Fringe parties with extreme positions can have inordinate influence due to the need of a larger party to put together a majority government. Israel is a great example. I get the theory, Nolen. I’m just pointing out that it can also lead to severe problems governing.

I wonder if more parties increases voter turnout.

I don’t know. You would hope so, but I haven’t seen data on it.

Turnout, lack of same, is such a huge problem here. The Republican Party’s years long effort to suppress the turnout of a large segment of American society has a negative impact, obviously. What’s happening during this election is suppression of the turnout of a scale I haven’t seen before. It’s truly shocking. Even the days of the poll tax is surpassed by this GOP effort, in my opinion.
