I'm not sure how many people on this board listen to Texas Country but I thought I'd give it a shot anyways. Please discuss your favorite Texas Country artists or any new artists that you've discovered and want to share with everyone. Support Texas music! Discuss...
Bob Wills is still the king, but I also like Willie, Waylon, Jerry Jeff, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and I really like Joe Ely... went to see him countless times when in college and just out. Django has a good tune or two.
George Strait is a legend. Not a big fan of the Texas singer/songwriters like Cory Morrow, Pat Green, etc.
I've always liked Pat Green and Wade Bowen the wife likes a lot of Texas Country, especially Cross Canadian Ragweed (actually they're from Oklahoma, but close enough...), Roger Creager, Reckless Kelly, etc check out a new guy - Kyle Park. he's good
I tend to call this Texas Rock. It's not what country is today, but it's got more of a twang than RnR. My favorites are. Hayes Carl Joe Ely Lyle Lovett Pat Green Steve Erle (though he's going off the deep end lately) Reckless Kelly I refuse to give any respect to Jack Ingram until he admits where he's from. He says San Antonio. Bulls*it. He's a rich kid from The Woodlands. He was a couple years ahead of me. Hayes Carl was a year behind me. We were good friends growing up.
the list begins and ends with robert earl keen... saw him at greek bros. on el campo thursday night and it was great. absolutely phenomenal song-writer and story teller.
More than one now I think...caught them at the whitewater amphitheatre a couple of weeks ago. everyone interested should listen to: knbt, 92.1 radio new braunfels kvet, 98.1 after 8 or so, "the roadhouse" high quality tx country show ????, 95.9, Fort Worth krvl, 94.3 out of kerrville kgsr, 107.1, just because it's the baddest ass station on terrestrial radio
Kevin Fowler, Roger Creager, Kyle Park and a little bit of Cory Morrow, Pat Green, and Granger Smith(not an Aggie myself but his music is ok)
You'll definitely want to check out Adam Carroll. His stuff can be a little hard to find (try Cactus, maybe?), but it's well worth any digging. He's one of the best songwriters in the game today. His album "Far Away Blues" is one of my all-time favorites. Other favorites: The aforementioned Robert Earl Keen, Jr. Townes Van Zandt Willis Alan Ramsey (only 1 album, but it's perfect) Hayes Carll Lyle Lovett Darden Smith Shake Russell I've heard Gordy Quist is good, but don't really know any of his stuff...anybody?
Where I work I am kind of the Texas Country guy. Biggest requests are for Cross-Canadian, REK, and Pat Green. Roger Creager and Kevin Fowler come up too. I keep getting requests for Randy Rogers but I don't really get it. I like the Texas Country because it's different from Nashville but Randy Rogers seems more Nashville. Pat Green seems to have gone Nashville as well. Personally, I like REK best.
