These threads are painful living in the bay area. Crap, I want some BBQ that someone other than me makes.

You ready to start experimenting with styropaks and dry ice?

you may not get any good bbq out there, but those clam chowders w/ the edible sour-dough bowl are a nice consolation prize.

Believe me...dsnow23 gets plenty of GREAT BBQ. He just has to make it himself. He's overqualified...

Vergos' Rendezvous is definitely on my "need to visit" places after seeing how they cook the meat and how long some of their employees have been working there. There are waitstaff and cooks that have been working there for 40+ years. That's probably a good sign.

Ok a friend of mine brought me Snow's brisket on Saturday, I had to reheat it in the microwave, but it was excellent. the sauce is actually very good too.

Now I want to taste it fresh out of the smoker!

I've told as many people about it as possible - as good as Texas BBQ is, Snow's takes it to a new level. Not sure what they do, but its amazing. You should also try their ribs and their pork.

Sorry if I missed it discussed already (coming in late on this thread) but has anybody tried the MASSIVELY overrated Kreuz Market in Lockhart?

I'm disappointed that Travel Channel has long cited this place as THE place to get Texas BBQ. The brisket is tough and dry. The sides are passable. The sausage is very rich and tasty, very succulent...but nothing can make up for that terrible brisket. Truly a let down.

Sliced brisket should fall apart with a "cut" from the blunt side of a plastic fork. My chompers had a hard time even pulling this crap apart.

Can't wait to try Snow's, though.

    Hey disciple,
the brisket is inconsistent at Kreuz, it depends on when you go (the earlier the better) I went once late in the day and I had dry brisket.

if you do get the good juicy brisket, it is awesome.

One place that has been consistent every time is Franklin's.

Wow....really? Went to Kreuz a few months back and it was absolutely amazing!

Didn't think anybody could beat it since in my mind it was not possible to make bbq any better then that. That is till I tried Snows.

One of the top three culinary experiences of my life.

If your in the Galveston county you should go to Joe's BBQ in Alvin and Grand Prize in Texas City. Exceptional BBQ only eclipsed in my mind by County Line in Austin.

Kreuz market isn't the better place to go in Lockart - Smitty's is. Both restaurants are from the same family, but they split when there was a family fued (no, not the game show).

I went to Smitty's about a month ago and it was, by far, the best brisket I've ever put down my throat. While I was there, I bought some rub and smoked my first brisket. It came out perfect - exactly like Smitty's.

I haven't tried Snow's yet. I know that Texas Monthly awarded them the best brisket in Texas (and nothing else came close). I can't imagine it being better than Smitty's. I hope to visit Lexington, TX soon and find out for myself.

Here's photos of my first time smoking a brisket. I researched the hell out of it and learned a LOT of tips and tricks before I began. Smoked a 10 lb brisket for 10 hours. It came out P E R F E C T !!!!

Interesting, we did in fact go fairly late in the afternoon. But I've also heard that Kreuz has really just kind of gone downhill slowly over time. Not sure when they moved to that newer building under the overpass but it was kind of sterile. Not looking for Bennigan's-style fake flare/Americana on the wall or anything...but I did expect some modicum of aesthetic history for such a historic place. Honestly, I might just have to try it again when I'm in that area some time...but Smitty's definitely gets my business next.
