Also...don't know how many of you have ever been to the Big Easy Social & Pleasure Club on Friday or Saturday night, but Adam's BBQ, sold out on the patio of the club, is pretty damn tasty.....
Gatlin's brisket is just good, not great. (I haven't found good brisket from a restaurant in Houston yet.) Their sausage is some of the best I've ever had, though. Almost a perfect blend of the quality of West Texas sausage and the flavor of cajun sausage.
I got to Gatlin's every time I'm in Houston. I went over Christmas break. I've been there 4 times now. I usually get both the brisket and Sausage. The last time I went the brisket was the best I've had since Kreuz almost 20 years ago. Their service doesn't suck, but it is slow. If you know that going in and aren't expecting a quick in and out lunch or whatever, it's great. The lady who runs it is as nice as nice can be, and I love talking with her. Super friendly. Sometimes she'll talk to customers no matter how long the line is, so it kind of makes it slower. But that's also part of the charm. Every time I'm there I've heard people complain about the wait and service, but I think it's just a matter of expectations and appreciating the down home hospitality.
VooDoo....how are you liking your BGE? I've been thinking of getting one. What size did you get? Where did you get yours, and what did it cost you?
I love my BGE. Once you get your fire going and dial in the temp it just cooks forever for slow smoking. Lately I've been baking bread in it as well. They've been turning out excellent. About a week ago i cooked some thick cut pork chops over 600 degree fire and they turned out awesome. I bought a large, from a hardware wholesaler in Austin that was having a demo and fundraiser. I paid $599 which was the lowest price I was able to find and I had been looking for years.
FCGB just gave only their 2nd 6-star rating to a place in Bryan, Tx : Fargo's Pit BBQ. Somebody go check it out. FYI : It's strictly a take-out joint. I'd go check it out, but I have a cold and will be resting this weekend.... especially since I can barely taste anything with a stuffed nose. http://fcg-bbq.blogspot.com/2010/02/fargos-pit-bbq.html
Just got back from Salt Lick in Round Rock. It was great. Had turkey, pulled pork and brisket and tried a couple pieces of sausage, all very good. Slaw and potato side wasn't very good imo. I enjoyed the slightly sweet yet spicy sauce, it was different. Hotel is just down the street. I was driving to Taco Bueno for dinner then saw salt lick on the way so of course I stopped there. I haven't really had much bbq outside of Houston. This was probably the best I've ever had (or I was just really hungry).
why are you in Round Rock? If you keep driving down that highway to taylor, you definitely need to check out Louie Mueller's
Actually Im currently in Taylor for ercot training. Staying in hutto. I may have to check that place out. Is it better than snows? Snows is kinda on the way back to Houston. I leave tomorrow around 2... Will snows still have food around 3?
hold up yo - you are in taylor, the home of one of the top 5-7 bbq joints in the state and you drove out to round rock to go to nasty salt lick? thats like going to vegas and staying at the MGM grand and going to the airport to play the slots. there are two bbq joints next door to each other - muellers and mikeskas - mikeskas is ok, but make sure the one you walk into is louie muellers - its a very old building and the entire inside is coated in smoke - they will greet you at the counter w/ a chunk of brisket and you will reek like bbq smoke for the rest of the day. still havent been to snows, but from what i understand they usually sell out before noon.
I think Muellers is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a blissful cut, and sometimes its feels like they sized you up at the door and determined you couldn't tell the difference. Also, their sauce really isn't bbq sauce. Its more like pan drippings.
Yeah, I finally had Salt Lick over the summer and wasn't too impressed. I should have listened to my Austin friends who all said it was nothing special and really just a bunch of hype. Is this the same Mikeskas as the one on 59 on the way to Corpus? I finally stopped there a couple of weeks ago on the way to a gig after seeing it a million times. Not bad, but I was REALLY hungry so I could have eaten anything and liked it.
Thanks. I didn't plan ahead on finding bbq. I was just driving and saw salt lick and remember hearing it was good. I wasn't disappointed. Ill go to muellers tomorrow. Im going to need to bring it home, anyone have a suggestion on what to get that will last the car ride to Houston?
you just need to ask them for fatty brisket every time. I like the sauce, it's more of an au jus . i haven't tried the salt lick in round rock. i heard the original location is better.
First, the Salt Lick isn't garbage. It might not be Mueller's, Snow's, or any of the Lockhart places...but it is good food. I happen to like it. Besides, you all have missed out on the finest BBQ ever. The Castell General Store. Much like Snow's, they only cook on Saturdays and you have to get there before lunch.
The original location is better but RR isn't bad. The problem with the salt lick is that they go through hundreds of briskets a day. They can't be as choosy when it comes to selecting briskets as Franklins can. If Franklins attempted to do the volume the Salt Lick does, I doubt people would claim that they were the best.
