Simms and Applewhite were both dropback pocket passers who don't pose a running threat. Mock and Young complement each other very well. VY is a threat to break off 10-15 yards every time he takes off with it. Mock is a very capable and efficient QB, who isn't going to make a whole lot of mistakes.
It's not too hard to figure out who I'm rooting for in this game...just look at my screen name. I don't expect the hogs to win...the t-sips are too deep, too talented, and have the homefield advantage. But, I didn't expect the win when I was at the 2000 Cotton Bowl... I think the Hogs will at least make a game out of it. There's no way it's larger than a 14 point spread. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Pigggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg! Soooooooooooooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! By the way, I now go to aTm, so I'll have two chances to beat UT this year. I'm pretty sure neither of them will work out though.
Baqui, or anyone else: let me know who you think will lead Texas in tackles this week. I have to guess for a little 'pool' I'm in. Thanks. Also, I'm leaning towards like a 22-10 prediction, for Texas.
Derrick Johnson. The guy is an absolute freak of nature and one of the best athletes in college football, in my opinion.
I don't understand the hype about this game, really. I'm just old enough to remember meeting them regularly in the SWC... and nobody really got up for it then, why should we now? Especially when their team is crappy, unranked, and we're playing them at home where I'm guessing we'll smack them around to the tune of 35-14. People talking up Arkansas keep talking up their 'smash mouth' style and "great" athleticism. They may have a few great athletes. But nobody, except maybe Miami, OU, and FSU... have anywhere close[/] to our athletes. Arkansas isn't in the same league in terms of athletes. We're breaking in new QBs, you say. Their QB sucks. He's a decent runner who can't pass. If we can take out Ell Roberson on the road... we can take out Matt Jones at home. I can't wait till he tries to run laterally to buy time against us. Meet Derrick Johnson, Mr. Jones. Oh - and that's Kalen Thornton. Kind of fast for a DE, isn't he? The only guy who's going to hurt us at all is Cobbs. And this team has the best D-line I've ever seen on a Texas team. And it's several guys deep. Their corners are going to get destroyed. Even the most diehard piggy fans are admitting their corners don't match up. They're doomed. I think the game is being talked up as a good match-up because: 1. There aren't many this week. 2. It used to be a one-sided rivalry (54-20, all time record in favor of UT... so only the Piggies cared) 3. The anti-UT bias. Blow out.
The physical freak in the linebacking corps is Robison. 250 lbs, true 4.5 speed, 40 inch vertical, all Big 12 discus as a true freshman- I can't wait to see him against top competition.
To me, it's on the level of Tech or OSU. Not a big, big deal imo. Of course, I want UT to win, but this wasn't one of the games I circled. 1300 had a guy from Fayetcille on today. He said "it was a really big deal in Arkansas and they've had this game circled since it was scheduled. Fans were chanting beat Texas after the Tulsa game."
As for Arkansas beating UT in the 99 Cotton Bowl, who cares. That game was meaningless. It was basically an exhibition game since both teams didn't achieve their ultimate goal. The only meaningful bowl games are the BCS games. Now, this upcoming game is very important, and if Arkansas were to win, I would give them props, but to give them props for winning a meaningless game in 1999, nah.
This game is a perfect example of the hype of the game meaning a lot more to the other school than to Texas. I think UT will win 37-20.
Well...meaningless, maybe...for Texas fans. That's about the only spin you could put on that game. The Horns were supposed to totally thrash the Hogs. The hogs were supposed to be overmatched at every position. Texas was supposed to have incredible speed. Texas was supposed to have TWO all-world quarterbacks. That's the point. There are similarities to be drawn. And one can't say that this year is different, because this year UT is gonna win it all...best team they've ever had. Sorry to tell you, but every year UT has their best team ever. That game might have been meaningless to the casual fan. However, it probably secured Arkansas a few recruits...namely Ahmad Carrol and Lawrence Richardson, both of whom referenced that game as a turning point in their thought process. Of course, it probably bought the lowly Razorback fans some bragging rights. It's one thing for the Hogs to lose to Texas, they are supposed to. UT losing to UA, however, is embarassing to not only the university, but to the state. Lastly, that game helped Arkansas improve their facilities. In fact, over a million dollars to help renovate and expand Razorback stadium. Meaningless...maybe if you are trying to justify the embarrasment of losing to Arkansas.
well, Texas did beat LSU in the Cotton Exhibition Bowl last year and it was no big deal. I didn't even care if UT won or not, I didn't even watch the game. There was nothing on the line. Consoliation bowl games blow unless they are BCS games. I'm not the state or the university, but I'm not embarrased that UT lost to Arkansas in a game with nothing on the line. I would have to care to be embarrassed. This game coming up is different, there is something on the line.
1. 2 of our best players were suspended for that game. It was close until the 4th quarter when our defense finally wore down. You guys won but it was a lot closer game than the final score. 2. Lawrence Richardson? I thought the turning point was when Arkansas showed him their facility for the mentally challenged. Im serious. Did he really get a 410 on his SAT?
This is nothing to back peddle from. I seriously don't see why people get worked up about this. Its childish.
Umm it has always been a rivalry. Arkansas and Texas were original members of the SWC. It was really big (similar to the current TX-OU series) during the late 60's early 70's when both schools were national powers. The greatest game in UT history was vs. Arkansas in 1969 when # 1 Texas beat # 2 Arkansas for the national championship.
Mack Brown has scheduled Ohio State. Since games are booked years in advance, it is hard to say who will good or bad.
GO HOGS DESTROY THE HORNS!!! I have been and always will be a Hog Wild fan! This Saturday we're serving a delicious helping of Longhorn steaks, stew, and roast! Please, help yourselves.
