It would be of no strategic value for Texas to play TAMU at the end of the season. TAMU will likely have multiple losses from the SEC schedule, Texas will likely have few losses in their Big 12 schedule. Texas winning won't help their BCS standings, they probably just have to beat OU to get a BCS game or lose to OU to miss out. A win against TAMU is no help and a loss is a killer for national standings. Though my degree is from A&M and my boyhood devotion is for UT (the one school my dad said he would not pay for ...'71..hippies) I went to TCU part time for 4 years, My wife and some of my best friends are still enthusiastic alumni. We attend a game or two every year and went to the Rose Bowl where TCU sold all 20,000 tickets and had demand for more. I think a lot of people are underestimating their drawing power. Everybody likes winners and no where more so than DFW. TCU has become the defacto hometown team in a metroplex area of 4 million people. They recruit almost exclusively from the Metroplex so every high school with a player on the team becomes TCU fans. If/when they play Texas or Oklahoma it will own the Mertoplex's TV eyeballs, more than those schools alone. Also, I don't get the WVa hate. I always enjoy watching their games, they almost always have draft pick material at the skill positions.
how bout this, garrnir... go **** in one hand and wish in the other and tell us which one fills up first.
No strategic value? Okay. Still on UT. You went to TCU, TAMU, UT -- you're a hybrid with no home. But seriously, TCU doesn't draw fans. You're kidding yourself. Mississippi State draws 50k when they're bad.
This would be huge. Did he say anything as to a timetable? I'm hoping we're talking days, not even weeks, on expansion... because any leverage OU/Mizzou have over Dodds (who wants 10) won't last very long.
nope...he didn't. he told me before that as soon as the call goes out to BYU, the answer is already yes. but if you're BYU, you wanna be damn sure you're committing to something that will be here...so they're going to want to wait until they get formal commitment amongst the current members before joining up.
Definitely. I just hope they're able to get that formal commitment today, and start on expansion over the next few days. It seems they're working pretty quickly, with Neinas essentially already in. There were rumors at various places online that officials with WVU and BYU were each in Dallas yesterday... not confirmed, though.
I believe in 2007, UT was scheduled to play ARK but ARK backed out because of their schedule and did so with little to no consequence. To their credit, I believe they were already playing A&M that year. What's to say something like that wouldn't happen when A&M decides to throw another fit? It's not worth it; Deloss sees it the same way. A&M wants to leave the Big12 and sever ties with their TX neighbors, then let them. Let the Aggies be outsiders in TX and wither off the branch. Why give them a marquee game in the state of TX? Texas citizens like to watch TX football. A&M football lost a bit of their TX heritage this year, and will continue to do so through the years. Farewell Aggie, the thing I'll miss most is the BCS revenue you brought to the conference. As for TCU, I think their BIG12 exclusion has been overblown. Dodds was against TCU for the Big12 when there were already 4 TX teams in the conference. With aggie gone, I think TCU will be included to gain back some of the market share lost. My gut feeling is BYU, TCU, +1. BYU and TCU have been pretty quiet through this whole thing; I think they were in negotiations and still are. the +1 is anyone's guess at this point.
http://campuscorner.kansascity.com/node/2074 COLUMBIA – Former Big Eight Conference commissioner Chuck Neinas has confirmed to The Star he has been approached by the Big 12 Conference about filling what is expected sometime today to become that league’s vacant commissioner’s chair. “It’s all happened very quickly,” Neinas said in a telephone interview. “I was contacted to see if I would be interested in assisting. “I responded affirmatively. “They’re going to have a telephone conference with the presidents and chancellors today and they will get back to me.” Is Neinas talking about assisting by becoming the interim or more permanent replacement for Dan Beebe, the current commissioner The Star reported Wednesday night has decided to step down? “I don’t want to comment on anything since I haven’t been retained,” Neinas said, adding that he would be glad to talk more expansively on Friday. But it certainly sounds as if the Big 12 wants Neinas – a no-nonsense administrator who during his days as Big Eight Commissioner in the 1970s served as his own investigator into allegations of league schools. Is the league interested in Neinas bringing those traits to the Big 12? “It sounds like they are,” Neinas said. Neinas' early background was with the NCAA. Neinas later went on to serve as president of the College Football Association and most recently has served as a headhunter for colleges seeking athletic directors and coaches. Neinas lives presently in the Boulder, Co., area. When asked how old he was, Neinas gave a laughing refusal and this explanation: “If I told you how old I was they might not offer me the job.” Read more: http://campuscorner.kansascity.com/node/2074#ixzz1Yi46xUSK
If Texas and OU want an iron-clad agreement to keep anyone from leaving, thus, ensuring some form of conference stability, I don't think see you'll see the other schools opposing it. If the conference were to dissolve, Texas and OU would get picked up by a major conference relatively quickly, of course some type of concessions would have to be made. But schools like Baylor, Iowa St., Kansas State, etc...wouldn't have it so easy. In other words, conference stability is more important to the smaller schools than a UT or OU IMO. While I think you're right in that a school opposing the reform could just pay the exit fee and leave, I don't see anyone doing that unless they have an offer from another conference already on the table (like the one Mizzou apparently has). Just an FYI, Mizzou's president has been the most admanant about keeping the Big 12 together throughout this whole thing.
We keep hearing this, but wasn't it Mizzou making eyes at the Big 10 that basically opened the door for all of this hell to break loose in the first place?
there's more than just hearing it. it happened. he ran the show in trying to piece this thing together at the last minute. i'm not suggesting they can't change their mind...but he pulled mizzou's chancellor picked up the ball and ran with keeping the conference together. he is chairman of the conference board and he hardly acted like someone who wants his university elsewhere.
At the risk of sounding more like the Aggie douche that I have embraced on this thread I will say there will not be once ounce of Texas lost out of TAMU we are now the ambassador of Texas to the rest of the SEC. If any thing it becomes stronger. If you think UT held up TAMU as the true Texas part about us you are more self absorbed than I am.
It's just a little silly for the school that 1st stuck their foot out of the door to suddenly be the champion/savior of the conference.
I thought it was Texas that started this whole thing way back when the Big 10 approached them and later Missouri got thrown into that discussion. The Big 10 made it clear it wanted to add a team or two and eventually that team became Nebraska. But I could've sworn this started with overtures toward Texas.
It was the governor of the state, not the chancellor (Deaton) and those directly affiliated with the school. That said, Mizzou and the SEC aren't done yet. Apparently the MU Board of Curators meeting this morning was to discuss whether to order Deaton to step down from his post as Big XII chair. I think Deaton definitely wants to keep the Big XII and I do believe he's been working to keep it together. That said, there are MANY powerful folks around the school - including the AD and Gary Pinkel - that are strongly pushing the SEC. Whatever it is, it'll be resolved soon... Deaton/Mizzou just called a press conference for 6:45 tonight. If I had to bet, I still think Mizzou stays. But I'm 60/40 on it now, after being 90/10 yesterday.
they're not. there is no savior of the conference this time around. just practical realities and a blend of circumstances. but deaton was working his ass off trying to keep it together at the end.
One of two things: either that the Big 12 is saved, or that he's stepping down from his post as chair. And you know what that would mean. I honestly have no idea. I know Deaton loves the Big XII, but the fact that MU called this press conference before the Big 12 meeting this afternoon makes me suspicious...
