Do the BORs of all the schools need to give their Presidents authority to invite other schools to the Big12? I assume not - but both the TX/OU BORs are planning to give Powers/Boren authority for conference realignment decisions on Monday. It would seem like you only need to do that if you're leaving the conference.
On wiki, it says that Cincy is a top-tier university in the 2012 edition of the US News and World Report. They played in a BCS bowl game the season before last but haven't had any real success in their basketball program since the Kenyon Martin days. Louisville has had good success in their basketball program (mens and womens) and won a BCS bowl game (Orange) in 07.
You can't play the BCS card when comparing CUSA schools when one is in an AQ conference and one isn't. If UH was in the Big East, they may have done the same.
Fair enough. I think most of us are discounting the effect of the basketball program. Ive heard where the Cougars play is not up to standard. And what's the progress on the football stadium? I read in April that they had about 60 of the 85 M or so required to start the project. I'm glad that this saga seems to be coming to an end unless everything blows up. It would be nice to remain in the conference so Baylor can build the $175 M stadium on campus. It also comes down to facilities. I'm not sure how the rumored schools stack up but Baylor has been aggressive. A new baseball stadium, tennis complex, renovations to the basketball arena, $8 M basketball practice facility, and a $40 M Athletics and Academics Center (Simpson).
Screw Cincy and Louisville, how weak can you get!? I want UH for selfish reasons. So I can get season tickets to Coogs games and travel 10 minutes to see Texas every other year. All of these rumors, I'm so freaking tired of everything. Just do something. The LHN is a complete JOKE. Greed is a wicked thing.
Well what does UH bring to the table that those schools don't? I don't know jack about their programs, but I'm assuming that's new TV sets. The Big 12 already has the Houston market.
Dude. Don't even. UH brings more viewers than those guys. The Big 12 already "has" the Houston market Doesn't mean they can't have "more" of it.
Personally, I wish this would happen. Mainly because I'm a huge basketball fan and us in the ACC is exciting. Wouldn't this make you happy, since exciting games seems to be your biggest driver? How many tough games would you expect UT to schedule? So, being independent means no auto BCS bid, right? But I guess if your contract is in the billion range (or whatever), you won't care because you are making so much $$ regardless?
How do they bring more sets? I'm assuming hardly anyone in Cincy or Louisville watch Big 12 ball. They would if they were in the conference. I know tons of Houstonian's watch Big 12 ball. So you are saying: New Cincy + Louisville sets < New Houston sets The focus is on "new" sets. Again, I don't know jack about the other aspects of their programs and I'm just assuming inviting them is expanding to a new market. However, someone on the last page gave a pretty good explanation of why the smaller Big 12 schools don't have any incentive to let UH in the conference, for the same reasons Florida doesn't want any other FL schools in the SEC.
Don't even bring up a good point? Houston is, at best, the 3rd most popular university in Houston. the TV market that UofH is holding in Houston is more than likely less than the market being held in Cincy in Louisville by their respective Universities.
DonnyMost - My inside source says that the University of Texas forbids Houston to be in the same division as them after they endangered the Longhorn fans with that unsafe stadium. UT says they will never schedule UH again. This is seriously what I was told and I think it's true.
Yeah - I wouldn't mind the ACC for all the non-football sports. They are great for basketball and baseball. UT being independent for football would be interesting to me - it's certainly a way to build the LHN and should generate quite a bit of money. I think if they schedule a Notre Dame type national schedule, that could be great fun. I'd missing competing for a conference title and having games matter the way conference games do, though - you're really just competing for a BCS game and an occasional national title opportunity, so it changes the dynamic some. But overall, I don't think I'd mind at all unless they scheduled a bunch of crap teams all season long - one of the best thing about ND is that they never have a ULaLa or directional school on their schedule. At this point, I think I'd be OK with Pac16, Big10, or this Independent/ACC thing. I think each has some fun, unique features. I'd be really disappointed with ACC or trying to hold the Big12 together.
One thing Longhorns and Aggies can’t deny: they fear UH That’s the bottom line in all of this. The Aggies and Longhorns won’t play UH because they’re afraid of UH. They would rather play Louisiana Monroe or Central Florida or UTEP or Stephen F. Austin or Florida International. They don’t fear those schools. Even if they lose a game to one of those schools, it doesn’t haunt them the way losing to UH does. It’s sad on so many levels. For one thing, the UH-Texas game once meant something. These were emotional games, important to both sides. If you ranked the toughest losses in Texas history, UH would show up high on the list a couple of times. I can understand A&M not wanting UH in the Big 12 and refusing to play UH more than Texas. UH is not a threat to Texas. Playing the Longhorns would give Texas a meaningful non-conference game instead of one of those games where Mack Brown’s only concern is getting his reserves playing time. But Texas A&M is right on the edge of being irrelevant. The Aggies haven’t been competitive in the Big 12 in a long time, haven’t finished in front of Texas or OU in a decade. As A&M has declined, UH has gotten better and better. Art Briles started it and Kevin Sumlin has kept it going. If the three teams played one another this season, Texas surely would beat UH, but UH would beat A&M badly. I know it’s not going to happen, but it’s a fun thing to think about. It would make a couple Saturdays a Fall a lot more interesting. http://blog.chron.com/sportsjustice/2010/07/one-thing-longhorns-and-aggies-cant-deny-they-fear-uh/
To be fair, they didn't endanger Longhorn fans - they did the opposite. They decide the structure wasn't safe, so they just cancelled all their tickets. Same end result of Ut being pissed, but at least they made the decision to keep them out of harm's way.
Do your homework DD. *edit: nevermind. you never do. saying stupid crap without thinking is your calling card.
