I think the difference between BCS vs Non-BCS revenue is about 10-12 million. That alone would put them right in the middle of Baylor/TTU/TCU.
Not taking into account the multiplier of the massive attendance increase. Houston always shows up for big college football games.
TTU is ahead of schedule to become a tier 1 university- now scheduled to be 2013 the only credential currently not met is the $1Bil endowment. Also on schedule to become the third flagship university of Texas by 2020. It is fairly obvious that most of you have not been to Lubbock in the last decade by the way it is being written off.
Maybe, but I'm looking at the Texas schedule right now and there are 4 ranked teams on it, 3 in the top 10. Virginia Tech's schedule has zero ranked teams on it, though presumably they would have FSU in a championship game. The ACC is just a total wasteland of tier 2 opponents. There are not even any programs on the rise - every year, every team floats pretty close 8-4 to 4-8. It's telling that no one ever even gets to 10-2. Part of the other issue is looking at the bigger picture. Compared to where everyone was 2 years ago, I would argue that Nebraska, OU, OSU, and A&M would all be in more-or-less the same (NEB/OU/OSU) or more exciting (A&M) a situation than they were in as far as quality of opponents. Texas would clearly be in a less exciting situation. That pretty much would suck given how much leverage Texas should have in putting itself in a great situation.
Hahaha, look, nobody is claiming that Lubbock is an amazing city. It's not. However, to discredit the university based on only your perception of Lubbock is ridiculous.
Now you're just being very arbitrary to take an early season snapshot like that - Had you taken a look at last year's preseason top 25 you'd see only 2 ranked Big12 teams on Texas' schedule as compared with 5 ACC teams in the same poll . I have no idea why you think Clemson, a good example of a 2nd tier ACC team, that usually puts up top 25-ish finishes, is "less exciting" than Big 12 analogues like Oklahoma State or Texas Tech - it's really not, it's kind of a wash at best. And power programs like FSU-VT-Miami speak for themselves. Add in that ACC road venues are in much better locations, that part of it is not even remotely a contest. To ignore that location, location, location isn't the prime mover in all this is even more so.
Do you disagree that most schedules, outside of the SEC, will feature 2-3 top games and the rest will be ho-hum games? That won't change in the ACC. OU, another OOC game and whatever ACC program is doing well that year (odds are there will be a program having Tech's or OK St's on and off success each season). Either way, all the ACC talk seems to be a bluff at the moment. As far as those knocking Tech, if you haven't been to Lubbock in the last decade then you have no idea how much that school has grown. If you're gonna knock the school at least give full disclosure and note if you have been there in the last 10 years or not. This is not your fathers "Tech".
I've been on a few road trips give me lubbock over the likes of norman, stillwater, college station, waco, aimes iowa, manhattan kansas and I feel much safter on tech campus than that of u of h... Most colleges are not in glamour cities....hence the word "college town" Tech is an attractive team to add with or without UT they will not be left behind There's more factors than just football but tech has one of the longest bowl streaks in the country. They draw well the stadiun has been redone a few times and the ball arena is very nice. Adding tech will get a growing school, great attendance, and tv sets in the dallas.
Maybe in the great plains there are lots of dumps like Lubbock or Ames or whatever . . . but around the rest of the country there's a lot of nice smallish college towns like Charlottesville, Chapel Hill, Athens, Annapolis, Boulder, Ann Arbor, etc etc that provide the eytomological genesis of the term....places where people actually kidn of want to live, which is why someplace like Lubbock gets a bad rap.
http://ope.ed.gov/security/GetOneInstitutionData.aspx Baylor: 1 crime per 833 students Rice: 1 crime per 130 students TCU: 1 crime per 253 students A&M: 1 crime per 967 students UT: 1 crime per 593 students TTU: 1 crime per 659 students UH: 1 crime per 455 students The 3rd ward may not be the most desirable place on earth, but we need to start being realistic about things. You're just as likely to encounter crime at several other universities in Texas. Unless you're in Waco (where they only steal beer out of the back of pickup trucks) or A&M (where the fake army will come after you).
those numbers about Waco surprise me, actually. when i was there at least, it was poverty-stricken. 2nd in the nation among children living in poverty. the area surrounding the university (outside the "baylor bubble") was definitely not in good shape. i used to volunteer at a boys' club there, and the stories were heartbreaking.
How the heck does OSU have higher revenues than oklahoma? What sports other that football brings in money for OSU.
