We can only hope David Carr will someday look half as good as Jay Cutler. I'm even getting a really bad feeling on Mario Williams. The guy's play has been underwhelming so far and he looks a lot more like a DT than a DE. I don't see any burst from him and he just doesn't seem to be around the ball very much.
I was growling at the TV during the first half at Little David. The rest of the team has put last year in the rear veiw mirror. Little David looked like it was last year. Over and over agin in the first half. Like the problem last year may have been Carr. Unfortunatley, Sage did not look as good against Denner as he did earlier. The plus side: Despite looking uncertain, he did play effectivly during the last drive of the first half and during the drives in the second half. He moved the team. He did not turn the ball over. I think he can use the good part of the game as a base and improve. I would like to have more confidence in our quarterback going against Philly. We'll see.
If McLain's right and it's not just spin by the Texans, then I don't think last night was a bad game for Carr. The long pass to Moulds was a great pass, he made a great pass to Johnson on the sidelines for a first down and also made a stong pass to Moulds throwing against his body for another first down. Sure, he still made some mistakes, but I'm not ready to throw the towel in on him just yet.
did you watch last night?? he was consistently double-teamed. over and over again. his impact is already being felt, as far as i can tell. the defense looks light-years better than they were last season.
Focusing on the short passing game, especially to the RBs, against one of - if not *the* - best/fastest group of LBs in football is a recipe for what we saw last night. If true.
Those throws you mentioned were in the second half, against the second unit. Denver was already without Warren and Brown on the defensive line and at the start of the second half all three starting linebackers were on the bench. I'm not buying for one second that "it was their gameplan to throw to the backs". The thrid pre-season game is usually the final tune-up game for the starters before the season opener. I just hope they are going to give up what it takes to get Brady Quinn if they are in range.
That's how I feel. McClain could very well be spinning, but Sage had a lot of dumpoff passes too. I'm not trying to make excuses for Carr, I'm done with that. But...he may have just been doing what his coaches told him to do last night. As far as Mario, I agree with MadMax. He was being double teamed throughout the first half. That's why our LB's and safeties were able to get free and pressure the QB on those blitz calls. There was also a 3rd and goal situation in the first half where Jake had to rush a throw that went out of the endzone even though the receiver was open. They had to kick a field goal. On the replay, the reason Jake rushed the throw was because of pressue by Mario. Basically, even though he got nothing on the stat line for that play, he took 4 points off the board for the Broncos.
that's kinda what i was thinking. this was it. thursday will see spotty action from the starters. i think you'd gameplan to "win"...to compete at the highest level. but that's just my assumption.
The defense looks a lot better but they were the worst defense in the league last year. I don't think you pass up on a gamebreaker to spend the number one pick overall on someone who just takes up a double team. Ted Washington takes up a double team too. He's only 21 so I'll be patient. The whole Julius Peppers comparison that people have made is way off though.
As is the Barry Sanders comparison as well considering neither Mario Williams or Reggie Bush have either played a snap in an NFL game that mattered.
Well, Carr looked a lot better than Plummer did last night. You guys need to chill with the Carr bashing. His last few possessions looked damn good. If he can start off like that, then he is what we need. Only problem is that it takes him a while to warm up...
like what?? 5 years?? seriously, this is the problem that people are harping on. the inconsistency. we've seen more flashes of mediocrity than brilliance in dave's career so far. i know..it's not all his fault. it's terribly unfair. whatever. he'll either lead them or he won't. i'm not holding my breath.
No, Sanders and Peppers were/are gamebreakers. Bush looks like a gamebreaker and Williams does not at this point.
i don't think you pass on a talent like VY because you have David Carr. but we've already been through that. you've seen 3 preseason games and you're SURE that the whole Peppers comparison is wrong??
All it takes is 3 preseason games and one long run on a busted play. I'm guessing CometsWin must believe that Morency is also the next Barry Sanders since he had a 43 yard run (and, gasp, he actually scored!).
15/22, 128 yards isnt bad...considering he racked up almost all of those numbers in about a quarters worth of play. Also, the INT he threw...it was a bad pass, but it was deflected and then intercepted...would have been an incomplete 90% of the time. Look, I have no problems saying that he looked like absolute crap in the 1st quarter. He really looked like a college QB playing in an NFL game. However, after that, he looked very solid. He made confident throws and he had the Texans driving and looking efficient against the Denver freaking Broncos...a team that will be aiming for the Superbowl this year.
After watching the 3 games Bush has played...I have come to the conclusion that the 2nd smartest move in franchise history was passing on Bush. This team clearly does not need him... The smartest move in franchise history was taking a freaking stud in Demeco Ryans...that guy is a straight baller.
