I know that throwing downfield is important, but you can't throw downfield unless you can go underneath first. The undereath passing game will open up the field. We all know that Carr can throw the deep ball as shown on the pass down the sideline to Moulds. Just seemed like Moulds didn't have all the wheels turning on that play. I think the downfield game will come and is more than likely there right now, we're just not seeing it as much because it is not something that needs as much work. Throwing the ball downfield takes a lot of things to go right to be successful, good protection, good throw and most importantly I think in our case is the receivers getting open. I'd rather Carr dump it off for a 4 yard gain than throw downfield into coverage just for the sake of going deep.
I'm not sure why everyone is piling on Carr. He had a shaky start but I thought he did pretty well later in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. He's learning a new system, coming off several years of bad coaching and constant pressure/sacking. Surely he's got a lot of improvement to make, but I still think it's unfair (and shortsighted) to be throwing him under the bus this early. I was actually encouraged to see him get his act together in the second and put a 70-yard drive together (which nearly resulted in a touchdown). You guys seem to forget that we were playing against a superbowl contender -- we were not supposed to be competitive in this game. I liked what I saw overall, and even though we didn't get the W, it was nice to see us actually standing ground with the big boys in this league. There might even be a possibility that we score a couple of upsets to start the season despite the rough schedule -- the way this defense is playing, why not?
Yeah, Im also not sure why everyone is so down on Carr...he started off like crap, but he put it together and looked solid once he got into the groove. He looked better than Plummer did.
I always thought the best I could hope Carr could do was play like Jake Plummer but man Plummer was even worse than Carr today. Oh well, at least the defense was pretty decent.
For a while there, I thought I was the only person that realized what they're doing on offense. I didn't get to see tonight's game here in Austin. In the 1st 2 games, it was quite clear what they were doing...at least to me. The first game they were clearly working on the bootleg and rolling out. In the 2nd game, it was pocket passing. Tonight, it appears it was to find the RB for the short passes. That's nothing to pile on the players for. Some of you guys are treating these games a little too much like regular season games. Relax. If your issues with Carr are still there after Week 2 or 3, then we can all start calling for Rosenfels to start. Until then, give it a break.
i agree. i don't have any particular attachment to carr but i'd like to see what happens in atleast a couple regular season games before i finally throw the towel in on him, if i have to. we don't have much of a choice anyways, cause rosenfelds isn't the future.
For whatever reason I just want to see Carr get made an example of and get benched so he's subjected to the same types of consequences for his poor play that all the other qbs in the league face. Put in Sage, let Carr ride the pine if he struggles early in the year. Then put him back in. If he can't perform after that THEN we'll know he truly stinks. I like Carr and have defended him but enough already. Very encouraging that the defense is coming around, whether Mario is contributing to it or not. Leave Demeco right where he's at.
The D looks better. The QB looks the same. I though overall the intensity and effort was good and last year it was really lacking.
Carr does not make plays and he will not be a good QB and here are some reasons- 1. He has trouble (still) reading defenses and he makes bad decisions in the pocket (one reason they are moving him out of the pocket is to give him fewer decisions- throw down the sideline, throw to the back or run) 2. He does not anticipate the routes his receivers are running, his timing is poor. He throws a split second late giving defenders time to react to the ball. Most of the time he does not find the open receiver and he forces balls into receivers because he misses his timing on throws. 3. He is a slow decision maker. He locks onto his receivers too quickly and doesn't come off covered receivers fast enough, he is tenative and this costs him providing leadership for the team. In other words it looks like he is trying to not make mistakes instead of confidently making big plays for the team. The Texans are in deep offensive trouble unless they develop a power house running attack or Kubiak is able to overcome Carr's deficiencies with offensive schemes. I think Kubiak is good enough with the offense to compensate for Carr's lack of play making ability but we won't know for sure until this season is completed.
rephrasing 3 - he still makes up his mind what he'll do before the ball is snapped. On the INT, he pegged the freaking defender because Lundy was that covered up, yet he threw it anyway. It was his worst problem last year, and he still seems to be unable to make reads / check off his 2nd or 3rd recievers. 4. At least last night, his selling of the play action was a joke. Most of the time, he didn't use the ball to fake the handoff. Moving past Carr - I really liked what I saw from Lundy and Ryans. They looked great. Overall, I think I need to downgrade my season outlook a tick. Probably more like a 4/5 win team than the 7 I was excited for. Evan
Well, despite some posters claims that maybe this game was designed specifically to perfect the short passing game to RBs, I don't buy it and I am no firmly out of the pro-Carr camp. I just don't see it. I needed to see some progression in him from last season, and it's not there. He's had a training camp and 3 preseason games with the new coaching staff and scheme now, and he looks exactly the same. Whether it was ever there, or the first 4 years of running for his life ruined him, I'm about ready to give up on Carr.
For what it's worth (or FWIW, for all you internet geeks), McClain actually said on 610 this morning that Kubiak was planning on working on the dumpoff passing game during the Denver game. That might explain why we saw so little throws to the receivers. Also, like some others have said, Denver has one of the best defenses in the league. The drive before the half and after the half were pretty encouraging to me. Our first team(s) played with one of the best teams in the league the whole time they were in there. Remember what happend last time we played a SB contending team on the road on a Sunday night? Anyone remember the Seattle game last year? I think it's safe to say last night was a little different. McClain also said that there are rumblings in Tennesse that the fans are starting to wonder why the titans took VY instead of hometown hero Jay Cutler. That's for you, DD
I would never charge any Rocket's fan....just point me in the direction of how I can do it, and it will be so..... DD
Carr officially creeps me out.. I'm rooting for him. But last night's game was like a microcosm of his entire career. In one word: erratic. I have no idea which Carr is gonna show up...and not just from game to game, but from series to series. He throws sooo many passes into tight coverage. The good news is that this team is very clearly improved.
Saw this game at the airport and when I got home... Ok, Carr just sucks...He consistently makes bad decisions and last night everyone saw it...Marshall Faulk was right on the money last night after the game..."Carr has the deer in the headlights look sometimes"...Hell, all of the time...There is no way he lasts the entire year as the starting QB, no matter how much $$ they paid him (which they shouldn't have done in the first place)... The team, overall looks better than last year, but Carr will sink this ship faster than the iceberg in Titanic...
