https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/texans/article/laremy-tunsil-trade-commanders-20226267.php “Pretty much they are just trying to keep the young guys together. It’s as simple as that,” Tunsil told local media Monday, when asked the explanation he received from Texans' staff. “When I was a rookie (my older teammates) would tell me it’s a young man’s game and I seen it for myself.” “They drafted some young guys and hit on every draft pick. So I fully understand it.” “I truly understand it,” Tunsil said, referencing Stingley’s deal. “At the end of the day, it’s a business. I don’t take anything personal. It’s no hard feelings against the Houston Texans. I thank them for everything they did for me and my family to changing my life. I get it.” “We could have done a lot of things better, myself included,” Tunsil said. “We could have protected C.J. better. It’s a lot of things that played a part in what happened last year.” “But again, I just can’t take it personal. I honestly think it was just a business move to try to pay the young guys. I don’t think it was off the play from last year.” The Texans are expected to have at least two new starters on their offensive line next season. Tytus Howard is expected to start at left tackle, while Blake Fisher is expected to start at right tackle unless they draft a tackle who wins the starting spot. When asked whether he’s looking for a contract extension in Washington, Tunsil declined to say, opting instead to keep that a secret. “The front office knows where I stand,” Tunsil said. “We’re just going to keep it in-house. But they know where I stand.”
Of course he finally takes ownership NOW. Where was this during the season when you blamed Scruggs for not snapping the ball at the right time?
He told the truth, it seemed Howard backed him up and the penalties stopped after Patterson took over at C. Coincidence? I think not.
I understand the need to ask, but does anyone expect Demeco to say anything to the media besides coach speak when talking about a player he just traded? Especially when talking about a player everyone personally likes. It was tough to trade him like it was tough to git rid of Bobby.
Includes penalties that were declined. (*one of this type was declined) Tunsil - 19 (False Start 12, *Illegal Formation 3, Offensive Holding 2, *Unnecessary Roughness 1, Ineligible Downfield Pass 1) Green - 6 (*Ineligible Downfield Pass 3, False Start 2, Offensive Holding 1) Scruggs - 5 (Offensive Holding 3, False Start 2) Howard - 5 (*Offensive Holding 2, False Start 1, Illegal Use of Hands 1, Tripping 1) Mason - 4 (Offensive Holding 3, False Start 1) Fisher - 3 (*Offensive Holding 3) Paterson - 1 (Offensive Holding 1)
How a team can get through 17 games with only 15 holding calls on the OL boggles my mind, because somebody is holding on just about every play.
So other than one bad game with Scruggs at center, Tunsil has 7 false starts in 16 games and this in,ludes games 1 until Scruggs was removed from center, I'll bet you Tunsil had another 3-5 with Scruggs playing the other games at center. So with Patterson at Center Tunsil's amount of penalties really weren't out of line. Especially since your stats include declined penalties. I don't know how many games Patterson started at Center but I'm guessing 10, so Tunsil wasn't the penalty machine many on here think he is with Patterson at Center. This is a case where numbers lie.
5 FS with Patterson 7 FS with Scruggs Hardly a big difference. I have never once said he is a penalty machine with Paterson or Scruggs playing. He was just a penalty machine last year. Using your terminology, I'm holding him accountable. I would say he had an issue with penalties. The rest of the line seemed to do okay with both. I guess Scruggs was talking more to his right than his left, but that still doesn’t explain why Tunsil had so many more false starts compared to the right tackles. If the center’s communication were really the issue, you’d expect to see more across the board. Instead, Tunsil was just jumping early more than anyone else. At some point, that falls on him, not just who’s at center.
He had 5 false starts in a game because of the way the officials weren't giving him the benefit like they had been the previous 3 games. So he only had 7 more all year and that's not bad for the other 16 games IMHO. BTW, I dont have an issue with trading him because letting him go meant the Texans got to extend Stingley/Hunter and that's a good trade off IMHO. But make no mistake Tunsil has talent and I cant wait to see him operate next to 2 competent OL Like Coleman and Biadaz, I bet he looks really good and then some posters will say he didn't try hard for the Texans, when in reality he will play better because he's got better talent around him. I'll bet you if the Redskins offense stays healthy they're really going to be potent this year.
Tunsil has talent but how long does he have it for and what will he command from the commanders now that he has all the leverage on his side again?
Can't pay a guy tops on the team when he doesn't fit the culture. It was a good move. Our O Line was bad and finesse at the same time. Tunsil is a finesse guy and the other followed suit.
I agree that it was a necessary trade. Good thing is we're going to get to see how Tunsil does with better talent around him in Washington. I bet he looks much better in a Redskins uniform.
He's 30 years old, I would imagine he can play at a high level for 3-4 years and hang on for another 3-4 years after that, retiring at age 36-37 IMHO.
I can't help but think of a performance evaluation expert who can't understand how his job effects the operations of the company. We all know these people (or perhaps are/were one.) I will use my favorite example which affects my view of a housekeeper. Some people become very efficient washing dishes, but they rarely come out clean. This is because one is a task and the other is a result.
Just to clarify, in the bad game against the Vikings, Tunsil had 6 penalties, 3 False Starts and 3 Illegal Formations. One of the illegal formations was declined. So it wasn’t 5 False Starts, but a mix: 3 False Starts and 2 Illegal formations. After that game, he corrected his alignment and didn’t have another Illegal Formation the rest of the season. DeMeco did address it, though no details were given beyond "He knows where to line up" and "It has been addressed." We all know Tunsil isn’t the type to be the first one in and the last to leave. Even when our QB mentioned, "He's not doing an extra practice," the reaction was laughter, "Yeah, that's LT, but he cool." I’m not denying his talent, but I do question his effort at times (games/practice). If he has a better year next season and I think he will, I wouldn’t be able to say exactly what caused it. My guess is a combination of factors will play a role.
