If you think this was a fleecing then I think you greatly overestimate Tunsil's value.

Dk metcalf didn’t get one either. No one is giving a first for his age, his contract, and his contact extension

Howard made a similar position change in 2021. But then it was to replace an injured Tunsil and Geron Christian at left tackle. In four starts at the position, Howard allowed one sack, two pressures and a 99.0 pass blocking efficiency grade per Pro Football Focus.

The other is Blake Fisher. Houston selected him in the second round of the 2024 draft as a primary backup to both Tunsil and Howard. Fisher briefly spelled Tunsil in four games last season while the left tackle was tending to injuries. Those stints were troublesome as he allowed five pressures in just 44 snaps according to PFF.

Fisher earned a starting spot at right tackle to finish the season when Howard pushed inside late in the year. There were also growing pains in that stretch, as Fisher allowed six sacks and 18 pressures over the six consecutive starts at the position. It concluded with an ugly playoff performance against the Kansas City Chiefs where Fisher was accountable for three sacks and seven pressures in the loss.

    __________

Many tackles available on the open market were picked up before the Texans made the trade. Though there are some options still available as of late Monday. Tyron Smith, Cam Robinson, Jedrick Wills Jr., Joseph Noteboom and Trent Brown appear to be potential options.

Smith is a two-time First Team All-Pro from his long tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. But injuries have been an issue for him over the last five seasons. Smith missed the final seven games of the season last year with the New York Jets due to a neck injury. He allowed five sacks and 22 pressures across 10 games last year per PFF. He's also four years older than Tunsil at 34.

Robinson is a name that Houston is familiar with after spending most of his first eight seasons in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings after seven games last year to help shore up their blindside ahead of a playoff push. He allowed eight sacks and 64 pressures across 18 games with both teams in 2024.

Wills would be familiar to Ryans as he was a standout at his alma mater, Alabama. That earned him a top 10 selection by the Cleveland Browns in the 2020 NFL draft. Wills has shown worthy of that pick at times but been inconsistent in his NFL career. He allowed three sacks and 11 pressures across five games before suffering a lingering knee injury ended his season last year. Though Ryans and Caserio have shown a liking to Alabama products, having as many as six on the roster last season.

Noteboom doesn’t have familiarity with Ryans, though he does with a new key member of the Texans staff. He’s played all seven of his NFL seasons for the Los Angeles Rams, the last two of which came under the coaching of new Houston offensive coordinator Nick Caley. Noteboom was not a primary starter for the Rams but familiarity with the Texans' new offensive leadership could draw some interest.

Another player who shares history with Caley is Brown. The soon-to-be 31-year-old was the starting left tackle for the New England Patriots twice when Caley was a coach there including when they won the Super Bowl in 2018. Brown allowed 11 sacks and 47 pressures across those two seasons (2018, 2022). He was to be the Cincinnati Bengals starting right tackle last season but tore his patellar tendon after three games. If Brown still has top level play left in him, he could be a name to watch given his familiarity with Caley.

    __________

Houston currently has pick No. 25 in the first round, likely too late for a top-tier tackle to be available.

With 17 picks in the next two drafts, Houston could package some of them to trade up to select a tackle this year. LSU’s Will Campbell, Missouri’s Armand Membou and Texas’ Kelvin Banks Jr. are likely to be among the first tackles taken.

If Houston wants to keep those picks and find their tackle with their current draft pick, they might be able to do so as well. Options like Ohio State’s Josh Simmons and Donovan Jackson, Oregon’s Josh Connerly Jr. and Minnesota’s Aireontae Ersery could be available at the end of the first round. /

ESPN has a 2nd and 3rd equal to a mid 1st in surplus value, also Caserio has used 7th round picks in back to back years to lock in cut guys before they get released in Mixon and Kirk.

The fifth year option is suddenly an issue. If I'm adjusting the value chart, I'd increase the gap between 1st and 2nd rounds and between each round with inserted picks.

I can see how you feel that way, but I see it a bit differently, hes an ex-player at the most important position, and he doesnt glaze over our team like everyone else does.

He made a big statement saying he wouldnt fully trust this leadership was serious about winning and overhauling this team unless they moved on from Tunsil, and he said it a while ago, not after it happened. It was an unpopular opinion for a local radio personality to have. And I feel like the ones that tell the hard truths are the ones that you can trust more. But we'll see how it works out.

We've used 7th rounders to get Christian Kirk and Joe Mixon.. so I wouldn't say useless.. I would have fellt much better about a 1st than the 2nd, but other than that not too against it, and wouldn't say fleeced which none of the national media pundits are saying either...

    Winner: OT Laremy Tunsil

Nobody has parlayed being traded at the right time into more money than Tunsil. In 2019, when the Texans traded two first-round picks to acquire him from the Dolphins, he declined to sign an extension as part of the deal. A year later, he took then-general manager Bill O'Brien to the cleaners, signing a three-year, $66 million contract that both moved the left tackle market forward and allowed him the potential to hit free agency again before turning 30.

Before the Texans drafted quarterback C.J. Stroud in 2023, they gave Tunsil another three-year deal, this time for $75 million. Now, with Stroud entering the final year of his bargain deal before presumably getting paid next offseason, the left tackle is on the move again. The Texans traded Tunsil to the Commanders on Monday, swapping fourth-round picks while landing second- and third-round selections from Washington in the process.

The Commanders were reportedly happy with what they saw from rookie left tackle Brandon Coleman over the second half of 2024, but his ability as a run blocker might make him a better fit on the right side, where he could take over from Andrew Wylie. Tunsil is coming off a disappointing season in which he led the league in penalties, but I'd chalk up some of the issues with the Houston offensive line to the broader struggles that plagued the offense last season. He will have to adjust to an offense that plays out of the pistol and shotgun, but he was able to do that just fine during the Deshaun Watson era in Houston.

The Texans are understandably upset with what they saw from their offensive line a year ago and are cleaning house. In addition to firing offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and Chris Strausser in January, general manager Nick Caserio released guard Shaq Mason over the weekend before trading away Tunsil. The two most experienced players on Houston's line are no longer in the building.

Juice Scruggs should take over at right guard for Mason, but the tackle situation is still up in the air. Blake Fisher, a second-round pick last April, finished the year at right tackle with Tytus Howard kicking inside to guard, but Howard has insisted in the past that he wants to play tackle. Kenyon Green, the team's 2022 first-round pick, has been a disaster at left guard and has been alternately injured and a liability when on the field. I'm not sure he's going to be guaranteed a roster spot in 2025.

If the Texans add a left tackle in free agency or (more likely) the draft, they could play Fisher at right tackle, Howard at left guard, Scruggs at right guard and move Green to the bench. If not, they'll have to try Fisher or Howard at left tackle, neither of whom is an appealing option. Either way, outside of Howard, this is going to be a very young and untested offensive line protecting one of the league's most promising quarterbacks.

As for Tunsil, he'll be just fine. Moving from Houston to Washington means the 30-year-old is in position to block for another quarterback on a rookie deal in Jayden Daniels, who won't even be eligible for an extension until after the 2026 season. With two years left on his existing deal, expect Tunsil to land another three-year extension for top-of-the-market money over the next 12 months. He's a pretty good tackle, but as one of the few players who represents himself in contract negotiations, he might be an even better agent.

Yes, he was awesome, in a vacuum/island by himself.. lets not forget that the worst guard in the league was next to him and instead of doing literally anything to help out, he just stayed on his island, blocking his single guy and not looking to his right at all. Just keep his PFF grade high and not worry about the team or the line. Another point and case is when he got asked about all the penalties... "it was the center's fault because his timing was so razor-perfect"
So ok, if the guard next to him can hold his own by himself, and the center is perfect on his timing, and its a passing play, then yes, Tunsil was one of the best... but if any of that faulters, hes mediocre at best..

This 84 out of 141 number seems incredibly misleading. There’s 64 starters, so it’s counting anyone who played tackle? Obviously someone will give more pressures playing 700 snaps vs 5 snaps. Sewell, for example gave up 28 and he’s probably the best player in the league. Sewell ranked 90th in penalties and 106th in pressures allowed.

I get not wanting to have an older guy that might break down, but unfortunately unless you are rolling with a rookie, anyone that is decent and in their late twenties is probably not someone that will be available to us (either because of exhorbitant contract demands or the trade price is too high). I'm not especially dialed in on the FA offensive linemen that are still available, so maybe there is a decent option out there that is better than Fant. I just reallllly don't want it to be Howard, Fisher or a rookie.

in hindsight the need for this trade should have been obvious given the upcoming contracts of Stingley/Stroud/WAJ, no matter what you think of Tunsil the player

This team actually has a lot of dawgs. Probably most in team history. And in every position group…EXCEPT offensive line. ZERO dawgs in the room there. Complete overhaul is warranted.

Tunsil is the James Harden of the NFL. You might think on paper that he's the guy, but he's not. He's not going to do any of the winning plays or things in the locker room necessary to create a winning environment.
