They're trying to remain flexible next year (Watt's deal) so I wouldn't be surprised if they do nothing with Smith unless there's a way to make it all workout without impacting the salary cap next season.
I would rather not restructure if we do not have to. Restructuring frees up cap space this year, but on the expense of future years. We have JJ Watt and Cushing to worry about, and they won't come cheap.
fwiw [Ravens] Interest in Reed overblown? It was interesting to see how the national media made it seem like the Ravens were in a bidding war with Houston for former safety Ed Reed. The Ravens made it appear that way out of respect for Reed, and it certainly put more money in Reed's pocket. But Ravens coach John Harbaugh wanted Reed back as much as he wants a root canal. It was the perfect time for both parties to go their separate ways.
LOL sour grapes. With the contract they gave Joe Flacco they could have paid off the national debt. Also an article claiming they wanted to be classy but threw in the root canal reference for their HOF safety coming off a super bowl win, that was nice - showed true class.
I never had the impression that there was a bidding war. So, they're playing the "We never wanted him anyway!" game. Stay classy, Baltimore.
Ignore that article. Mike Preston is a complete hack. He's the Skip Bayless of Baltimore Media, trolling for article clicks.
Harbaugh will deny that left and right come September, or just before the Ravens play the Texans. Just watch.

There's a lot of reasons the Texans suck this year, but Ed Reed is my favorite and most convenient scapegoat. I'm not sure if I'm more upset at him for hoodwinking the Texans, or more upset with Rick Smith for getting so totally abused.
