Elway is an idiot if he's getting personal/emotional over another GM paying one of his free agents more money.
This is a business, Rick Smith is dealing for his job and doing what he was told by the owner and head coach. Elway needs to get over it
So, in his mind the Texans offering $7 million more in a deal is just "incredibly too much!". In my mind, that's the price for acquiring a free agent... most free agents don't leave teams for less money, even if they really do want to leave. That's exactly why agents are good at what they do.
Lulz at you thinking Denver's version of Nick Wright has some sort of inside info worth considering. 24 hours ago, John Elway was some sort of QB guru who knows what he wants with QBs, and he would only let Brock go if he didn't think he was good enough. Turns out, Denver offers 4 years/$64 million and the Texans "saved the Broncos from themselves." I eagerly await where the target moves to next.
He's also a hippocrate if he doesn't understand why a player would not want to play for a certain team, and engineers a deal to go elsewhere... otherwise Elway would/should have been a Baltimore Colt.
basic summary...was that the Broncos thought -->$14 million per year...wouldve had secured his contract, but the paid amount to Bradford of $18 million drove up Brock's price. He doesnt know how big of a gamble it will be but hoping "this good kid" will workout for the Texans. Elway's comments was just sour grapes...he never expected him to leave, or would've franchised Brock. Ill check to see if they upload the 790 podcast during the course of today...
if demarcus ware didn't have a 30 mil contract or if they didn't have to franchise Von, the broncs would have offered more instead of that pocket change 16 mil a year. =)
Elway >>>>> Rick Smith. I'm not gonna even argue with you because if you don't know that then you aren't paying attention. It's like the Hoodie letting Mallet go for a 6th rounder. Some people didn't think anything of it but It's a statement in itself.
Quit crying over spilled milk. What's done is done. It's not about how you got to where you are, it's how you get to where you're going.
How do you know a drafted QB with ZERO NFL games will be any good? He got Bradford and probably Fitzy money and I think we all agree Os has a chance to be better than both of those guys for many reasons including size, arm, health, age, etc...
That's my point. Elway is obviously a better GM than Smith. And he was willing to give Osweiler $64 million. $64 million /= "letting him walk"

I agree with Elway > Smith but you can look at this outcome either way. You can say you like Osweiler because Elway drafted him, supported him as the starter over Manning and wanted to retain him. He also probably voiced his opinion on Osweiler to his friend, Rick Smith, well before Osweiler became a reasonable target for the Texans. Just because Elway lost the guy doesn't mean we're making a mistake.
Unless the Texans will win a super bowl the next 2 years, then whatever the fork happened 2 years later, people will always forgive because of the championship. Assuming that will not happen. And if Brock does not live up to the expectation and we have to cut him, people of course will hate on Rick Smith because we wasted another 2 years, plain and simple. Also the notion of we will cut him and save 15 millions is laughable, you cut him and then what? To sign Hoyer for the minimum again and pull him out of his car insurance career? And if Brock indeed perform at an acceptable level, at least like a young Matt Schuab, then here comes the problem 2 years later, all these signings with the huge cap figures, the Texans will need to scarify other key players to keep these signings and of course Brock will be the top priority. These moves are needed, but don't make Rick Smith like a genius and just curse him when your expectations will fall short. These are win now moves.
Anyone trying to make the argument that Osweiler isn't good because Elway didn't want him or wanted him less than Rick Smith is silly and blind to facts. They offered him more than $16 million per year and potentially could have gone higher if it had not become obvious to them that Osweiler was out no matter what.
As they should be. We've won 9 games the last 2 years. It's not like we're rebuilding. That's another thing I like about this move. Brock can start day 1. With a rookie, you're just not sure. This is a playoff team expected to win the division next year. Can you really do that with a rookie QB under Center?
I'm not saying Smith made a mistake signing the guy but I will say I disagree with the guy i was responding to saying Elway is spinning this.
