Manningham signed for more than we could afford, unless we wanted to cut some salary elsewhere. Amendola was a restricted free agent. Douglas signed a 4 yr, 10.5 million dollar deal...but I wouldnt necessarily say he's any better than a midround draft selection. I definitely wouldnt be up upset about "losing" out on him. I'd rather have Posey or Martin at a quarter of the price.
My understanding is that we are more than 4 million under the cap, if that is the case, then probably had a shot at Manningham.. But maybe he would have no interest.
I would have been happy with Manningham...but a good portion of our cap money would have had to be spent on the draft picks, so not sure what we had available. I just dont think we had any options, hopefully the FO learns from this and manages the cap a little bit better in the future.
Each year there is a rookie allotment within the cap to sign rookies. Just because we are under the cap over $4mil doesn't mean we can actually spend that much money. If you set aside 1+mil to 1st rounder, ~500k to 3rd rounders, etc. that adds up to $4+mil worth of salary. Plus the Texans will want some wiggle room in case someone ends up hurting in-season.

I saw the news in NFL.com and in the comments section: fans from other teams, really want him to sign with other teams? really? I read something like: "come to chicago! jacoby jones and brandon marshall is going to be a great duo!" other fan: "go to the steelers, so you can replace mike wallace!"
On Pro Football Talk, the comments section had plenty of fans from other cities wanting Jacoby to go there. Silly little fans.

i was...and it's nowhere close to as villified as Jacoby is. The Texans sucked during the Stevens era. Jacoby has the biggest blunder in franchise history to date, given the size of the stage he was on when he made it.
I live in Austin and one of the Dallas homers on the ESPN radio affiliate was clamoring for Jones, saying if Dez Bryant and Miles Austin can stay healthy, an addition of Jacoby Jones would make them one of the most leathel passing games in the league.
Nothing "odd" about it - this is exactly what a lot of us have been saying for months: Jacoby was safe as long as he was one of only three WRs on the roster and the only PR. Once they held the draft, and were able to address WR and PR, they felt better about releasing him. Too many people think the Texans randomly threw darts at their roster and started releasing people; not true. Every one they let walk, released and/or traded had a viable back-up already on the roster, meaning they realized true cap savings. IOW, it's not financially smart to release Winston if you have to immediately turn around and sign a RT for $3-4MM - you've netted no cap relief. But with Butler already here, they didn't have to spend money on a replacement.
I'm happy about this move, but not because of the muffed punt (like everyone else here). I just think it was time to give up on him. He never materialized into the player we thought he could be and was way overpaid. Re-signing him and Leinart were the only head-scratcher moves from last year's otherwise perfect offseason. No coincidence they are now both gone. Bottom line is he hasn't improved at all since his rookie year. You can only talk about a guy's potential for so long.
The punt was just icing on the cake for most people. I was annoyed that he was resigned, and at decent money. Leinart seemed fine, since it was still a step up from Sexy Rexy and we could tell ourselves that Kubiak was making him better behind the scenes. Jacoby had already made it clear that he stunk as a receiver. I'm also happy because it is one more sign that Rick Smith has asserted himself more as a GM and is willing to cut Kubiak's battlefighters. Kareem Jackson, consider yourself on notice. Better tear it up this season.
