http://www.csnphilly.com/football-p...gm-candidate-brian-gaine?p=ya5nbcs&ocid=yahoo Houston Texans executive Brian Gaine will not leave his current post to head the Eagles’ scouting department. The Texans have promoted Gaine to keep him from interviewing for a second time with Chip Kelly, multiple reports indicate. CBS Houston first reported of the Texans’ plan to keep Gaine from leaving. The NFL Network and Houston Chronicle reported the Texans have promoted Gaine to director of player personnel. Gaine’s promotion means Kelly is still seeking a personnel man to lead the front office and take the place of Howie Roseman, who was stripped of all personnel decisions during a major front-office shakeup executed by chairman Jeffrey Lurie shortly after the season finale. Lurie also gave Kelly, who now has final say over all personnel decisions, the freedom to hire a new personnel chief. Kelly and his staff will be at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, starting Monday while still seeking a top executive. Gaine is one of several candidates who have been identified for the position, including Ed Marynowitz, the Eagles’ assistant director of player personnel. Jaguars director of pro personnel Chris Polian, son of Bill Polian and former Indianapolis Colts vice president and general manager, has also interviewed for the job, according to a league source. Other candidates linked to the opening are Lions vice president of pro personnel Sheldon White, Dolphins director of college scouting Chris Grier, Packers director of player personnel Eliot Wolf and Seahawks director of college scouting Scott Fitterer.
Why are teams after all our guys? One would think the Texans have the best talent evaluators in the NFL.
Interesting. His new title is "Director of Player Personnel." Sounds to me he is de facto GM. First, O'Brien tells them the kinds of players he wants then Gaine will find the talent, Smith will negotiate the contracts and Chris Olsen will make sure they have the money under the cap to pay for the player.
Look at their record in the past 4 years... Only one bad year and two of those years they were considered super bowl contenders by many and they've had multiple pro bowl players throughout most of those years. And Smith is well liked around the NFL. If he got fired today he would probably have a job tomorrow. He'll probably have the same job he's been doing just with better pay and a new title.
We've had back to back bottom barrel drafts...and there are plenty of teams with better records or more pro bowlers over the last 4 years. Wouldn't the Broncos/Patriots/Bengals/49ers/Seahawks/Packers front office personnel get more attention?
Still too early to throw away the 2014 draft and they pulled Nuk out of the 2013 draft. And what's your definition of 'PLENTY'.... 15-20? Most of the Broncos moves have been through free agency... But those guys may be getting attention as well and we just haven't heard about it. But if Chip Kelly wants Gaine, who are we to question him. Maybe he knows something we don't.
Pulled Nuk out of the 2013 draft? lol, you make it seem like he was a mid round pick. He was the clear cut obvious pick at the back end of the 1st round. With that in mind, the 2013 draft was a colossal failure. I won't write off the 2014 just yet.. Hopefully the new oline coach can fix XSF because he has the tools.
Yea, if you say so. And Clowney was the clear cut obvious pick with the #1 pick in 2014... See what I did there
Yes, you are giving Rick Smith undue credit. I suppose he could have picked Patterson or Hunter, but clearly Nuk was the more polished WR. So way to go Rick, you did not mess that up. I think a lifetime contract extension is in order.
And how many players from the 2013 draft that were drafted before Nuk that are actually better than him... If Nuk was such an obvious pick he would have been drafted earlier. Have you seen what the Colts have done with their draft picks the past couple of years... Anyway, maybe Chip Kelly is just a dumb azz.
Maybe Kubiak and OBie should share some of your blame? I strongly suspect that Smith and his staff scouted and evaluated the college players, while the Texans HC using that analysis took who he wanted.
Part of what makes a scouting team a "good" one is by identifying players and convincing the coaching staff that those are the players that should be selected. If the coaching staff is making the wrong selections, then either: The scouting team is presenting players that arent top tier...or the scouting team is doing a great job scouting and a terrible job placing a certain level of importance on those players when presenting to the coaches. If either of those two components are failing, then the scouting isnt doing the job they are supposed to do. At the end of the day, when draft picks are failing, it's either because the scouting department isnt doing their job or the coaching staff is doing a terrible job developing those players. We've had instances where players like Holliday and Jacoby went on to have some success after they left the Texans, but Holliday eventually got cut and Jacoby hasnt been much more of a receiver than he was in Houston. In other words, those players werent necessarily failed by the coaching staff in Houston. There could be other examples where the coaching staff failed the players, but by and large, our scouting has been below average.
