In their last 29 games, the Texans are 14-15. That is the very definition of mediocre.

Ric's point is always that one can identify real, verifiable progress towards above-average-ness (if you will) in this team as it is now constituted, much more so than in 2004. They're still mediocre, but they're at least going somewhere.

I'm cool with that perspective. It makes sense to my sad, uneducated brain at least. They're still mediocre, but moving in the right direction.

Let's enjoy the ride. Maybe it will take us sweeter places, eventually, than our beloved Oilers did. :(

i've never argued otherwise, JayZ750. they were the absolute worst team in football in 2005; and not a one-year anomaly bad - they were, top to bottom, from front office to the last man on the bench, flat-out terrible. proof is in the pudding: the majority of that roster is either out of football or mired on the end of someone's bench. that was just three years ago!

so i'm well aware they're mediocre. BUT... there's a light at the end of the tunnel with this team - finally! - and it's no longer an out-of-control train being driven by charley casserly.

their games are no longer boring; they rarely get absolutely wiped off the field; they make progress from week-to-week... i mean, its probably damning with faint praise but this team is, far and away, the best, and easily the most entertaining team in franchise history.

when was the last time you were genuinely excited for a december game? this is a HUGE, meaningful game on a lot of different levels. i'm pumped and i hope the lessons they're obviously learning on a weekly basis come together for them and they knock tennessee's block off.

it'd be great if we could all pop out of the womb talking and walking but we don't. but i'd wager parents in this forum would concur that those moments leading up to our first word or step are every bit as precious and cherished, if not more so, than the big event.

that's what we're seeing here. so i'm enjoying the heck out of this - not from the same perspective as, say, a titan or giant fan - but from the perspective of where we started and where we are now. when they get this thing on the track for good next year (and they will), fans are going to start to take a little stock and realize how remarkable this turnaround has been, how quickly they've been able to turn over a barren roster and make it relevant.

other than september 9, 2002 - there's never been a better time to be a texan fan.

Except they were pretty competitive with good teams, and they weren't squeaking by bad teams, winning almost all of their games by double digits. They were tied with 12-4 San Diego going into the 4th quarter before losing by 7. They took an 8-8 Minnesota team (that made the playoffs) to OT. They were down 6 to the 12-4 Colts late in the 4th quarter. They beat 9-7 Jacksonville twice.

Were they great? Absolutely not - after all, they were a 7-9 team. But they were pretty competitive across the board in the majority of their games. Yes, they got blown out 3 times by really good teams - but that's pretty normal for sub-0.500 teams. That's happened to this year's team as well.

I'm not suggesting that was a good team or that this isn't a better team - it certainly is upgraded across the board now. But on the field, the 2004 team did pretty well given its talent level. Whether it was luck or good coaching or whatnot, who knows.
