taken from ESPN Insider Rumor Central: Apr. 13 - A lot of people think the Texans will draft an offensive lineman because of their attempt to sign Rams left tackle Orlando Pace. They are misreading things, according to John Clayton. The Texans aren't desperate for offensive line help. They like right tackle Todd Wade and still believe Seth Wand will develop into a good left tackle. The Texans would love to have a running back such as Cadillac Williams or Cedric Benson fall to them at No. 13. They would also like to get a wide receiver, particularly Troy Williamson. The only way they take a tackle in the first round is if he rates out better than other players and is the best player on the board. Tackle isn't a need pick for them. DAMN, Cedric Benson or Cadillac Williams would be beautiful, we'd have an amazing running game with Benson doing N/S running and DD doing the cutbacks out to the sides.
Don't mean to derail the draft talk, but I just got word that I am flying to Baltimore the weekend of 12/4 to see the Texans play the Ravens. My brother lives there and got the ducats. WOOHOO!
A couple of us over on HPF.com are looking to get a Texans tailgate going for the Ravens game. If you're interested, I'll keep you up on the details as they progress.
Thanks for posting the Insider article, but I doubt the Texans are looking for a back. Obviously, IF Benson did fall to 13 (which he won't), we would take him, but I think the Texans need something more than a RB.
I don't see Morency as anything more than a 3rd down back. He will also work on special teams I'm sure. Capers is known to multi-tast limited players. Tony Hollings is probably the one that should fear his job as he is injury prone. I don't think DD was drafted to be a premier RB, rather a special teams guy and a 3rd down back. VM could prove me wrong. In what I've read he lacks the break away speed, is not a receiver type RB, and is prone to fumbling. These are things that a RB coach can fix over time. With us releasing all these money players, I wonder who we're saving up for. It has to be an offensive player. Perhaps a receiver?
Vernand Morency is being brought in to compete for the starting RB spot, but will end up a backup at start of season most likely. Hollings has probably already been downgraded to fourth back behind Wells. Morency probably won't be a third down back, IMO. He's more of a first, second down kind of guy until he can show receiving skills. He used blocks pretty well when I saw him and he seemed to have enough speed to take it to the house when he got into the open field. He doesn't have enough speed to run on the outside, but most don't in NFL.
There's really nobody out there though. OL is the most crying need that has yet to be addressed at all this offseason (unless you count a 5th round draft pick)
That's probably my biggest concern for the season. There is a lot of time left so hopefully the Texans will address the OL problem. And that 5th rounder center we picked up doesn't count like you said.
There isn't anyone out there right now, but maybe they're targeting some guys who may be June 1 cuts.
Looks like Mathis is turning some heads. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/fb/texans/3162205
So now it looks like Pitts is moving back to left tackle. Riley is also going to try out for the spot and Shelton is in town. I'm sick of indecisiveness on the most important position on the offense. Damn you Boselli.
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/0603shelton-ON.html Associated Press Jun. 3, 2005 08:05 PM CLEVELAND - Former Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle L.J. Shelton agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns on Friday, giving the club insurance in case Ross Verba holds out for a bigger contract....
I take it that means the Seth Wand experiment failed now that he has been supplanted by the mediocre player he replaced. Casserly's OL building job has been a huge embarrassment - particularly in the draft, he has whiffed by inexplicably not drafting OL at all despite all the problems the Texans have.
This week is without pads, It's a time where everyone is learning their responsibilities, especially the timing for the new short drop passing game (nobody has said west coast offense for some reason). It's a good time to experiment and prepare to move players in case of injury. I wouldn't read too much into it yet.
Here is a new article by Miss Manfull. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/fb/texans/3226001 Typical non-eventful offseason article, but I thought one of Dom's quotes were interesting. "So now the next step for us is the biggest and most difficult step to take. And the only way to do it is if you have guys who understand what it does take and I think we have more players on this team right now with more experience and they understand what it does take." Didn't we just get rid of experienced players for young athletic players. Make up your mind dude, is he gonna **** or is he gonna kill us.
