Don't know if the word's already out, but the Texans are holding a press conference at 3 p.m. today (Thurs) to announce the signing of a free agent. Casserly and Capers will both be there, so it could be significant.
If it someone else's FA, I would bet it's probably Morlon Greenwood. Sounded like he and his agent had fallen in love with Houston on his visit.
I believe it will be someone new to the team, yeah. Resigning guys doesn't usually rate a press conference with the head coach. Payne's signing didn't.
Damn. Thats the kind of wideout the Texans need to take the pressure off of Johnson. I guess we will get that in the draft.
Texans have signed Morlon Greenwood of the Dolphins to a five year contract. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2004143
Based upon this year and last year, it looks like Casserly and Capers set their sights on a player and go after them with everything they've got to lock them up as quickly as possible. I hadn't even heard about Greenwood interested in the Texans until his visit then all of the sudden he signs a deal. Then last year, Wade and Smith signed just after the FA market opened. I'm glad the Texans are willing to go the extra mile to get the players they want, but I'm scared about the albatross one of these deals could become if the player doesn't pan out.
I didn't understand that one anyway. He's a pretty good back. Why take the #2 role behind a young running back. At least with NYJ, he'll back up Curtis Martin who probably isn't long for this league. I'd much rather keep Wells around as #2 and see if Hollings can improve as the #3.
from what ive read about greenwood he just got stronger as the season went along. I like this pickup.
Odd stat for Greenwood - 133 tackles (second on team) 0 sacks. Of course, probably just an artifcat of the system.
It is. I believe someone said that Zach Thomas has 3.5 sacks over the last 3 years, yet he's considered one of the best LB's in the game. The Miami system has always generated sacks from the DL. If Greenwood is playing ILB, the there should be no problem, as long as he can play the run and cover. The Texans system (in theory) generates sacks from the OLB and DE's. I do wonder if this is posturing just in case Derrick Johnson is available at 13.
I was looking at his stats per game and as the season went along he got better. I like him because he is such a sure tackler and he is always around the ball. He has great football instincts.
Speaking of Greenwood, I was talking to my friend who lives in Miami. He says that people are calling into the radio stations, laughing, because they think its a joke that Greenwood signed that kind of a contract. He went on to say that Greenwood must have the best agent out there. Anyways, hope he earns that contract. People in Miami definitely dont think he can.
its not that bad of a contract. he is making just over 4 mill a year. I dont know if it is backloaded or not though. And he is just entering his prime physical and mental age as a football player. Plus its just another youngster to add to the large crop players that we have here. I really like the way Casserly is building this team through smart fiscal FA signings of young core type players and the build up of depth with the draft.
IMO - I always thought the Dolphins were one of the most under-acheived football franchises in history.
Anyone else hear Donovin Darius get permission to seek a trade from Jags? Any way we could get him? That'd bolster the secondary...or we could let McCree get more looks back there...
Texans | Could Pursue Franks - from www.KFFL.com Thu, 10 Mar 2005 11:38:24 -0800 Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports the Houston Texans might be interested in Green Bay Packers transition player TE Bubba Franks, who has yet to make any free agent visits this offseason.
Bubba Franks ... the king of the 1-yard TD receptions. Obviously he has great size and is a factor in the red zone. Depending on contract details, why the heck not?
