I agree with drummer2k. Spencer is the key here. If he can come back and play up to his previous level, then Bob's Your Uncle. If not, then I'm afraid it will be another season of "And may God have mercy on their souls...". All I can say "Best of luck to you Matt. See you at the crossroads..." (yet another unrequested Bone Thugs and Harmony reference...)

There may have been improvement... it may have all been the QB's fault... the bottom line is they both needed MORE improvement.

I've always been under the umbrella that replacing Carr won't solve all of the offense's problems. I've also always maintained that the hallmarks of a funcitonal offensive line is stability of players (which they haven't had), talent in players (which they haven't had), and good coaching (which they may or may not have had... I can't keep track of all the offensive line coaches they've had now in 5 years).

The day I see a Houston Texan QB routinely be able to drop back, survey the defense, and complete a pass (and the defense isn't laying down because they're in a blow out) will be the first... and when it does happen, the offense is then cured.

I agree that Spencer is the key, that's why I'm a little concerned that we didn't concentrate more on the O-Line so far this offseason. Hopefully the Texans know something we don't (as far as Spencer's recovery) but if he is still questionable, I thought we needed to do more than sign a "mixed-review" tackle and a 5th/6th round picks that most likely won't see the field.

john mcclain was talking about how they reduced their sack total by 25 last season and their were actually eight teams behind them. not great but the as bad as is made out to be either.

Yeah, I've heard McClain harping about how the O-Line isn't as bad as others thing and that nobody understands what's really been happening here. To me, it sounds like if he keeps saying this, he'll actually start to believe it. Oh, and he's firmly on board with the blame PrettyDavid movement that's been gaining momentum.

3 step drop is the reason (and DC still sometimes ran into his OL who beat him getting to the pocket :().

I don't agree that this is a new development. You don't remember all the Carr-hate that's been around here? Someone earlier said that everyone felt good about Carr going into 2005, and I don't agree with that either. There are folks who (loudly) disapproved of Carr ever since the close of the inaugural season. The only thing about the Carr-hatred that could be "gaining momentum" is the organization's moving of Carr appears (to Carr-haters) to have given credence to their opinions.

No, this is the somewhat new "See, The Offensive Line Really Wasn't So Bad After All. It Was All PrettyDavid's Fault Because He Sucked As A QB" bit of revisionist history the organization is now hiding behind to mask the fact that their OL has basically blown chunks for 5 years. I'm talking big ugly 25 total rushing yards in a game type chunks here. The Carr-Hater movement you describe is alive and well and still rolling merrily along when I last looked.

Consistency is a major ingredient to an offensive line.

It's been long decided that Pitt is the Left Guard; and this coaching staff is sticking to it!!! Previous guys kept putting him back at Left Tackle, which isn't his stong point. Should be starting there for the next 7 to 10 years.

And the Coaches decided the Fred Weary was a capable starter at Right Guard. A guy who was so close to being cut by the old staff. Here he is the starter. He appears to be the Starter there.

Then the Texans drafted Eric Winston. Whom came in injured, therfore had to be brought along slowly. But he appears to be healthy and ready to contribute. Now it appears he is the starter there.

But Steve's been here for a long tenure. Salaam comes back for his second season. Flannigan comes back for another season (hopefully he'll be healthy)

Spencer took over the Left Tackle position in Preseason, and everyone said he was a steal in the draft. Hopefully he can recover enough to contribute well next season.

But, it appears ESPN want the texans to overhaul the OL. Winston was a first round pick that slipped to the 3rd round because of injuries; and everyone knew he wasn't going to be 100% healthy until at least this year or later. Coaches know that their jobs are on the line if they can't win.

Now the National media wanted us to take a right tackle in Levi Brown; or at least trade up for him. (Senseless)

This current OL needs to come together. And it appears the pieces are falling into place. Next year, this shouldn't be in the lower echelon in the league as a unit.

Yep, he was great in college, if I remember right. There was some concern about his off the field problems (although I don't know any details) and I remember people saying that's why he wasn't a 1st round pick.

If what you say is correct about his injuries, he could wind up being a solid piece as well. Let's hope so.

BREAKING NEWS: THE TEXANS O-LINE STINKS! :D

In all reality, we have known they we're horrible. But just how bad we will get a better gauge this coming year. I remember hearing over and over how the Titans line was supposed to be just as bad last year before the season, if not worse. But Vince Young made them look pretty good and erased all that talk. Drew Bledsoe made o-lines look worse than they were just like David Carr did. That's why Carr has always reminded me of Bledsoe, except Bledsoe could occasionally put up some numbers via the long ball. Neither of them move when needed, they both look like statues. They're we're plenty of times where Carr could have run for an easy 5 yards to avoid the man coming w/o getting hammered. :(

Carr never used his speed to bother getting out of the pocket. You would never see him roll to his right or left to complete a pass. Instead, as soon as he saw a DB breaking through he froze like a deer in headlights. So i don't think the line deserves all the fault. :)

Somehow DD was able to constantly rush for over 1000 yards. Yet, you always hear a RB can't run through a brick wall. But he did proving the line may have been bad, but Carr had to be a leading factor or DD was the best RB in the game!

I agree that we still should have done more to improve them. At least spend a small portion on the O-Line like we do on an under performing D-Line. We need to at least give someone a nice paycheck to play LT on a losing team if were not gonna draft someone highly rated.

Spencer and Winston may not suck. Spencer didn't suck before he got injured and he may make 100% recovery by the start of the regular season.
Winston may play up to the level of his junior year at The U when everyone was projecting him as a first round Left Tackle.

If hope springs eternal; there is certainly no reason to declare the line sucks at this point.

One of the biggest helps for the line might be Ahman Green. A good safety valve receiver can cut your sack totals a bunch and even turn an overeager pass rush into big yardage plays.

If Schaub can recognize the blitz and hit his hot receivers he will be a giant step on Carr who never could and it will be Daniels' second year so he should better at recognizing where the open spot is against the blitz.

It is my contention that Carr was never good a checking down his reads or seeing a man about to come open. That was certainly a factor in the downward spiral of his career. I think Kubiak came to the Texans thinking he was just limited by coaching but later figured out he was just limited in his ability . The more he couldn't find a receiver the more he got sacked, the more he got sacked the more he rushed the reads. He spiraled down to where sacks became an exploitable weakness and every team diregarded coverage to concentrate on the pass rush.

We may see a huge turnaround this year, if nothing else we have a fresh start in that Schaub and Green aren't Carr and Dayne. And every other team in the league doesn't start out knowing exactly how to defense the Texans.

Making pass reads and good descisions in the NFL is one of the toughest skills in sports. It takes vision, anticipation, fast cognitive skills and the physical skills to execute the throw all while 10 300 lbs. men are tharshing around in front of you , half of them trying to crush you. Good luck Matt Schaub.

Carr ran out of bounds before the LOS on many of those.

Other QB's do to, but not as much as Carr.

    This line will be better.

    wait, let me re-phrase.

I hope the line will be better.

    There, I feel better.

absolutley one of the smartest things posted!!! Carr was weak at reading defenses, therfore allowing defenses to consistently blitz. The offensive line was continuously getting tired because CARR NEVER MADE TEAMS PAY FOR BLITZING!!! More times than not, he got sacked; or managed to run out of bounds. :(

My bro spoke to one of the offensive lineup not even a year ago at a Hooters for a 610 radio thing. The guy said the whole line was always pissed off at Carr and the two (Carr and the line) didn't get along very well.

By the way, the Dallas Cowboys line was awful until they got rid of Bledsoe for Romo.

I always thought it was funny how people blame Carr for the offesive line problem when he's getting hit on the third step of a 7 step drop.

I feel sorry for Matt Shaub he will get all the blame like David

While Carr was not slow, he was just as bad at moving around in the pocket as Bledsoe. The man was TERRIBLE at feeling the blitz/pressure coming and stepping up to avoid it.
