hahaha, Chris Gamble...over Sean Taylor. You're kidding right. I've seen a fair amount of OSU games (regrettably, hate the Big X), but never see what the big deal with him is. I'm pretty critical of DB's though. He played both ways, great, but he just seemed to get beat whenever I'd focus on him. Greg Jones is a beast but I'm not sure about his health. I like Kevin Jones alot as well. It's sort of hard for me to say who I think will be great picks since I don't watch hours of tape like some of the experts here. Obviously I'd take the word of someone who's watched a whole season of one team over a game or two. I don't know if it's just luck or he has a nose for the ball but Sean Taylor was always there. That was pretty cool when he got run over by the W. Va back though.
He didn't get run over by Quincy Wilson or whoever that back was for West Virginia - it was the backup Brandon Merriweather, who is like 30 pounds lighter than Taylor.
*bump* Thought I would bring this thread back since the draft is this weekend. Hopefully w/ the threads I posted in getting Sean Taylor come true. If not, we still can get Kenechi Udeze, DeAngelo Hall, or Tommie Harris.
Hate to burst your bubble, but Casserly has already said that Udeze doesn't fit into the 3-4 defense and Hall will be gone by 10. If you really want Harris, he''l be there, but I'd pass on him. I'm really hoping the Texans trade down a little and acquire some extra picks.
I agree. I think Harris had like 100 tackles his whole career. He's just overhyped. Now with a chance that Mike Williams will not be in the draft, Hall will probably be gone with the ATL pick. I think the Texans might draft Dunta Robinson if they are stuck at 10, BUT I've never heard anything about him until he ran that 4.34. 40 times are overated, so I'd rather trade #10 + a 4th rounder next year for Jet's #12 and a 3rd rounder this year. I think that would be a good trade for both teams, since the Jets really want a CB. We can draft Wilfolk or Smith with 12, and get Strait, Poole, or Sean Jones with our 2nd round pick. Marcus Tubbs is another option is we move to like somewhere in the 20s, but he's too much of a reach at 12.
It is strange but I really hope we don't pick in the 10th spot unless by some strange reason the mock I saw where Taylor falls to 10 comes true. I would be satisfied if we traded up for ST but I would also be equally satisfied if we traded down for more picks. I know that sounds contradictary but my reasoning is this; I just don't see any player that fills a positional need at #10 that we couldn't trade down and get that player or something equal. If for some odd reason Hall is stillthere at 10, I wouldn't mind seeing them make a deal with Pittsburgh and move down one spot. Hold that pick over their heads and tell them it will be dealt to a team seeking a QB. Then see if they will trade up to get the QB of their choice. Who knows how these things will play out. That is one of the reasons I enjoy watch ing the first round or 2.
Should Hall be gone at 10 (I'm stil not convinced he will be, but just in case) I wouldn't be too dissapointed with Dunta Robinson. He doesn't have quite the speed of Hall, but from what I've seen he's a hitter. IIRC he came into college as a safety and kept that mindset when he moved to CB. From what I've seen he loves to hit and comes up well to play the run. I'd still like to trade up to Taylor to fill one of the obvious holes this team has, but if we have to stay at 10 I think Robinson would be a good pick for the team.
I'd love to have Taylor on this team, but I really don't think he's worth a first and a second, especially on a team that isn't a Super Bowl contender. This draft is too deep, and the Texans too weak to give up their first two picks for Taylor. Now if they could get him for #10 and a third, I'd be all for it. I wouldn't be upset to see us pick Robinson at 10, but if Hall, Taylor and Roy are all gone by 10, I think I'd trade down, pick up some extra picks, and take either Vilma or Gamble.
One D lineman that I saw that REALLY impressed me was Randy Starks. Maybe it was just because he was so much better than his teammates, but he was a man among boys. If we trade down and end up with him I wouldn't be unhappy. For those of you who think that the Texans are going to trade up for Shawn Taylor, keep in mind that the guy scored single digits on his Wonderlic, and one of the main reasons they kept Matt Stevens, the guy he'd be replacing around for so long, was because the Texan's "D" requires the FS to be the smartest guy on the field and call all the plays. I also think there's some fairly decent depth in the later rounds, with guys like Stewart Schweigart, Shawn Jones and several others getting good reviews. If DeAngelo Hall is as good as some of the reviews I've been reading (I can't say, as I never specifically watched him play), it'd be really hard for me to pass up on him for Taylor, given that his inteligence test is a "documented flaw" not just some unquantifiable "bad attitude" rumor like the other supposed flaw that people are attaching to the guy. FYI Roy Williams, Dallas Cowboy to whom Taylor is often compared scored a much more respectable 23 on his Wonderlic.
If you take a look around in some mocks it looks like we might be able to get Starks in the second round. He has slipped pretty far.
I've been doin some research and I've changed my mind on this draft. I think we should just draft Wilfolk instead of Hall. We will need to have a nose tackle to anchor our line. We have 2 ends right now and theres no telling if Payne will be healthy. If you look at all the DTs in this year's draft, there is about only 3 or 4 thats even worth a pick in the first 2 rounds. We need a big guy, so Harris and Dockett will not work. Wilfolk is the best option and starks is next. About 10 teams behind us are looking at a DT, so I'M SURE that Starks and Tubbs will be gone by #42. If we draft Hall, we'd probably be stuck taking Donnell Washington or Sopoaga. I'd rather have Wilfolk and Jones/Poole/Carrol/Strait/Ware.
Got Em, I'm just not sold on Wilfork. He took a ton of plays off at Miami, and I think his weight is a big concern. He recently showed up for a workout 15 pounds heavier than he was at the combine. I think we could find a decent nose later in the draft, I'd be pleased with Sopoaga. I'd much rather have him in the second than Wilfork in the first. Also, by all accounts, Payne is recovering really well and should be ready for the start of the season. But as I've said before, since Hall will likely be off the board at 10, I would really like to see us trade down and pick up some extra picks, then target either Vilma or Gamble.
I think a tradedown for Gamble is the best option. Just because he doesn't run as fast as Hall and Robinson with no pads on and in a perfectly straight line doesn't mean he doesn't have the "football speed" needed to excel at the CB position.
I dont want a project....I want a starter. Trade up for Gallery, and the O-line is SET. Casserly says on www.houstontexans.com that 3 teams have contacted him about trading back to 10.
There is an outside chance Gallery could go #1 overall, and if not he most likely won't make it out of the top five. It does look like Hall will be gone and there are conflicting reports on whether Dunta Robinson will be a worthwhile consolation prize by staying at #10. Obviously the Texans would like to trade down in this very deep draft but a viable trade partner will be difficult to find. It seems most teams are satisfied with their spot because of the depth. The Texans are one of the few teams vocally advocating their desire to move up. But fear not they still have a sliver of leverage. “We’ve heard from three different teams ahead of us about wanting to move back to our pick,” Casserly said. “There’s a lot of speculation there that they’re looking to take a quarterback at 10 and don’t want to take one any earlier.” Many teams looking to trade down means perhaps we can nab Taylor without giving up our second rounder. This is what I see happening. A trade up for Taylor something like our #1 and #3 for Taylor and a #5. It's going to be fun I already took off work and bought a new TV!
Imagine that Manning is the only QB taken in the top 9. I think it's a given that the Steelers would jump all over Roethlisberger, but either the Bills (with whom the Texans were talking recently about another QB) or possibly the 49'ers would look to leapfrog the Steelers if they really like Roethlisberger, and the best place to do that would be the Texans. If the Texans were to move down 3 to 6 spots and still be able to pick up one of the first tier DT's if they slide as a group like they seem to be doing in many mock drafts. In any case, I think the Steelers' needs make the Texan's pick a real pivot point for somebody looking to grab a QB. If, for instance, the top two QB's are gone when the Texans come up and the Steelers are still at 11 somebody might get desperate enough to both trade up and reach for Rivers at 10. From what I can tell, the Steeler's intentions if they stay at 11 are pretty clear - they want one of the top 3 QB's. My freaky-hunch pick? If Isaac Hilton is still available when the Texans pick in the second round, given what a crappy year this is for OLB, I wonder if the Texans would try to make him their holy-grail rush LB. He definitely comes from the Dom Capers-Kevin Greene OLB mold. He's a giant, a super athlete, and fast (4.53 40). Regarding the fact that Starks is falling in many mock drafts, I think that just has to do with the fact that he perhaps hasn't had as much exposure for some of these pundits. I noticed the trend too, but I haven't been able to find out any evidence of any poor workout, or bad attitude, or the like, and it seems that every year there is somebody who drops like a rock in the mock drafts but ends up where they were originally projected. Of course I could be wrong, but unless there's some hidden flaw I've missed, I can't imagine him falling out of the first round. I was much more impressed with him than Tommy Harris, for instance. He'd also be great for the Texans in that he could play end or NT in the 3-4 and is the "athletic project" type that the Texans seem to love.
