There are reports that the county is responsible for maintence of NRG, but the Rockets are responsible at Toyota Center, and the Astros are responsible at Daiken Park. Who is the hell approved that lease and the other teams didn't get the same deal.
There are certain elements that the teams have control over, usually cosmetic/internal improvements (locker rooms/clubhouses). NRG’s stuff is down to the major infra-structure…. Leaks and electrical. The county still has to do the major stuff at Toyota center (roof lighting, grime) and MMP/Daikan (roof fungus, air-conditioning!)
As an Arsenal fan (Stan Kroenke - KSE owns Arsenal as well as the rams, Nuggets and Avalanche plus seven other teams) I can testify to the fact that Stan Kroenke's sports ownership is a hobby of his, winning is not a priority for him, he lucked into the championships he got, he cares about the real estate, he owns all the buildings his teams operate out of as well as 100+ commercial retail centers, Walmarts and office buildings. This fukhing guy's real estate company is called THF - To Have Fun. He's got money to burn and he has no issue burning it because he knows he's just going to get more. No other owners should be compared to him, especially two company owning, one team owning Cal Mcnair lol. Unless Cal sells the team to Elon Musk, Bezos or a Saudi billionaire, the Texans will require public funds for whatever comes next for the stadium
Something in my gut is telling me that the Rockets may possibly ask for a new arena here soon as well in the upcoming years.
Can’t Cal just take out a loan? When normal people buy a home or a car they take out a loan. Cal wants a new home for his team, let him take out a loan. I’m pretty sure the Texans are making a pretty nice profit every year.
Yeah, but he's probably going to push for tax incentives from the county. Jerry Jones got loans to build AT&T Stadium but still received $325 million from the city of Arlington in bonds. In return, the city was promised job creation, economic growth, increased tax revenue, and urban revitalization. In my opinion, the actual return on investment for taxpayers is debatable. Owners clearly benefit, while the public’s gains depend on how well the stadium is integrated into the local economy. And of course, hosting a Super Bowl can help offset some taxpayer-funded stadium costs. Super Bowls typically generate between $300 million and $500 million in total revenue through tourism, increased sales tax collections, and a surge in local business activity.
Also, Tellman paid for all the TC renovations himself and paid for the practice facility himself as well.
The more I think about this the more I want to double down on not paying anything for renovations or a new stadium, you want to give them some tax breaks or something then fine, but as a taxpayer, I love my teams, but I am tired of subsidizing billionaire owners and millionaire players and THEN paying $12 for a beer and $50 for a t shirt. Ya`ll are rich, figure it the F out
And actually, per the chronicle article today (paywalled, let JR figure it out), there is a different stipulation that says the Texans are not responsible for the stuff at NRG that the Rockets/Astros are responsible for in their stadiums.... in part because of the Astrodome? Such a cluster for the county. Either pay a Billion dollars in upkeep/renovations (that was already agreed upon per the original referendum and creation of the sports authority, etc.), or let the Texans go and be stuck with two broke stadiums.
The city wanted another football team so badly that they let Bob McNair bend them over. Dont let this happen again, let the McNair's move the team if it comes down to the taxpayers having to pay for the McNair's new playpen. That money needs to go to essential services. Of course the politicians will probably just steal the money anyways so what does it really matter?
Well the money is already earmarked towards the county having to pay for the upkeep... that's already the case. I don't know if the county has that money however and they're probably going to want the teams to commit something to help... but if the county also wasn't prepared for such contingencies, not sure why the teams/rodeo should be blamed. They purchased a video system and constructed a roof that are both prone to catastrophic failures in the upcoming years without major maintenance.
Absofreakinglutely. According to Forbes, the Texans are worth $6.1B. In 2012, they were worth ~$1.5B. There is no need for counties or taxpayers - or anybody - but the team owners to foot the bill for a stadium they will keep the majority of the profits.
This is the part that gets me. We pay for your stadium....and then you price us out of the games? Let's talk about a voucher system for taxpayers. Or a cap on ticket and concession prices. Then we'll talk about building your stadium.
Would be nice if they did similar to the falcons. $2 ( soda, popcorn and hotdogs). Very family friendly.
No one said anything about them leaving downtown it could be built on the empty lots near Toyota Center.
The public financing usually comes from tourist taxes...hotels, rental cars. If you live in Houston and stay in Houston hotels a lot, might have bigger problems to deal with than being upset about paying a few extra bucks per night in a Houston hotel. Travel to other cities with sports teams and look at an itemized bill from your hotel and see how your helping them pay for their sports stadiums.
Why would they build a new stadium next to their old stadium. They would either have two stadiums next to one another or they'd have to demolish Toyota Center.
