After that horrendous playoff game, he must go. Plus, I don't think he would want to stay with the Texans anyway.
hahaha Rick leveraging the hell of out the Hoyer situation just now in the PC. "You need multiple good QBs and Brian has proven he can play in this league."
Rick: It's apparent you need a couple of QBs in this league. Hoyer understands our scheme & team and is a valuable member of our team.
He's a luxury at backup QB. If you were to lose Brock for a game or two, Hoyer could be passable in short stints if he needed to be. I like to think Savage is taking those next steps though. A Hoyer trade may be used to help shore up another position. In a perfect world, you won't ever need him, and that makes him worth more to other teams than he is here. Makes sense to seek trade options.
He's passable only if you are playing one of the absolute worst teams in the NFL. Against even a slightly below average team, Hoyer is pathetic.
Ian Rapoport Note from @NFLTotalAccess: #Texans and QB Brian Hoyer appear headed for a divorce and both sides sound OK with a fresh start. He's available 4:07 PM - 29 Mar 2016
Brian Hoyer - the only QB who makes Schaub look like Brady I'd rather field Savage, if all else failed.
Honestly, that would be poetic. "We saved $7 million in guaranteed money by not re-signing Brock...and we're gonna roll out in defense of our Super Bowl championship with Brian Hoyer at QB."
I'd like to trade my credit card that has a huge balance, if the Texans can pull this off then maybe there's hope for me too.
If you know Hoyer isn't the answer (and he isn't), then it's worth it to outright cut him to get his specter off the sidelines (not to mention the 5MM bucks you save) so Brock's audition and growth won't be stunted by O'Brien getting nervous and pulling him for the (playoff hope) Destroyer. This particular credit card's balance is non-guaranteed, and lucky for us credit cards are in short supply. The Texans trading Hoyer for a 6th+ round pick isn't all that amazing, guys. It says more about the state of the market than it does Rick Smith.
You guys are crazy if you don't think the Texans can trade Brian Hoyer. Matt Schaub was dead and they traded him. Rick Smith has successfully traded dead Matt Schaub, about to get cut TJ Yates, about to get cut Case Keenum and BBS whipping boy Ryan Fitzpatrick. You don't think he can trade Bobbythegreat's favorite quarterback? You underrate Hoyer, you underrate the thirst for QBs around the league and you underrate Rick Smith's ability to do trades. He's very friendly and liked by guys around the league and is active every year in trading guys.

Unless the Texans need the 5MM to sign other folks, not much of a point to cut him outright at his point. As a fan, yes I don't want Hoyer on this team, but if you have already held on to him this long and it's possible that you can get something for ostensibly nothing, then might as well hold on a bit longer. Obviously if there is a FA that we want and need the money, then yeah cutting him would be a no brainer. Nothing amazing, but something for nothing.
