Looks like McClain was wrong on Bodden... ChronicleTexans Free agent cornerback Leigh Bodden will visit with the Texans this week
I'm really getting sick of McCain stating his opinions as fact. I would like the guy more if he would say, "It's not likely the Texans will sign Bodden", then saying "The Texans will not sign Bodden." http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/category/_/name/leigh-bodden
True, but people love it when a team gets a top 3 or 5 overall pick. You end up paying that guy 6 yrs / $50MM and he's totally unproven and has a decent chance to be a bust or an average player. Why would it be worse to trade a second or third round pick for a proven version of that guy with the 6 yr / $50MM contract? Or just flat out pay a FA proven version of that top 5 pick that 6 yrs / $50MM? Sure, they are a bit older - but none of these contracts are guaranteed so you can cut them in 2 or 3 years if their performance goes downhill. I'm not saying FA is the solution to everything. Nor are trades. Nor is drafting. All are used to get both expensive and cheap players. A good GM is going to mix up the pieces and use all the different venues to better their team.
When I read his tweet on the subject, that's how I interpreted it. McClain stating opinion as fact. It kind of pissed me off.
He does state his opinion as a fact which also pisses me off. Another thing that pisses me off about him is his obsession with Bruce Matthews. As for Leigh Bodden, I would love to pick him up. He is still in the prime of his career and is more of playmaker than Dunta Robinson. Honestly, I think may be better than post injury Dunta Robinson.
"Contrary to other reports" = McClain I said this yesterday, you lock everyone in a room and make sure he doesn't come out without a signed contract in hand. Signing him would allow us to be a lot more picky going into the draft.
Veteran CB Bodden visiting with Texans Posted: March 7th, 2010 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: 2010 Free Agency, Houston Texans, Leigh Bodden, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers Free-agent cornerback Leigh Bodden is visiting the Houston Texans, according to a league source. The seventh-year veteran, whom the Patriots are trying to keep, has been in negotiations with Houston, New England and Pittsburgh for several days. Contrary to other reports, the Texans have had consistent interest, and Bodden will be meeting with coaches and front office staff Sunday. Bodden spent last season in New England, where he started 14 games and had five interceptions.
That's what McCain does. He acts like the Texans are HIS team and whatever he thinks the Texans are going to do is what he posts. In his head Its like he's in this secret society and we are so lucky to be let in on his knowledge with these definitive answers. "Are the Texans interested in cornerback Leigh Bodden?" McClain: NO! Are you dumb? The Texans (Me) are not interested in signing any cornerbacks. 100% No. (Leigh Bodden comes in for a visit) "John, we just brought in 2 dozen doughnuts for the office, do you think there is any chance that you can leave the resemblance of at least a doughnut hole for the rest of us" McClain: No chance, absolutely not. The likelihood of me NOT eating the entire batch of doughnuts in one sitting is about as likely as me taking down my poster of a shirtless Clay Matthews I have stapled to the ceiling above my bed.
It's McClain and his personal vendetta to become to the Texans general manager vs the world's media. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/07/bodden-will-meet-with-texans/ Reasonably cheap. VS... McClain's twitter... His twitter also contains Oscar picks, and several tweets about the Matthews family of course http://twitter.com/mcclain_on_nfl
Bodden's agent's tweet: http://twitter.com/AlvinKeels I hope the Texans sign Bodden and draft a CB. That way they have all their bases covered. It's hard for a rookie to come in and start right away. Signing Bodden will let whichever rookie CB come in without the pressure of starting. If he turns out to be another Glover Quin then the Texans can start him midway through the season.
I can't remember a time when the Texans have a been a free agent's first visit and left without signing here.
Id like for us to be able to sign bodden, and then draft either safety or running back in the first two rounds. It seems like there will be a lot of good rbs that will be available in the second round. Signing bodden and drafting another corner in the first seems like a waste of resources for this year. I dont think hes a true #1 corner, but someone who is solid and allows you to address deeper needs/give you the freedom to go after the best available players heading into the draft.
I'd say Bodden already outperformed Dunta this past year, granted he did have a better defense around him...
Lol, if Bodden wants only 4-5 million per season, I'd sign him in a heartbeat. Now that's a contract that you can cut ties with if things dont pan out and not have to pay heavily for it.
