These are the same guys that completely turned around the organization. Keep in mind that we were the youngest team in the NFL this past season. We had the third highest payroll in the league. They are committed to winning. Nuff said.
Adam Schefter is reporting 4 years, 22 million, with 10 million guaranteed. Hmm...I cant imagine our offer being much lower...and the fact that there is no income taxes in Texas...I feel used.
Let's put some substance to this "McNair is cheap" nonsense... 2009 NFL Payroll Team- ..............................Total Payroll New York Giants..................$ 138,354,866 Miami Dolphins.....................$ 126,855,921 Houston Texans...............$ 122,258,610 New Orleans Saints...............$ 121,552,424 Chicago Bears......................$ 120,672,110 New York Jets......................$ 120,634,420 Pittsburgh Steelers...............$ 119,292,960 Green Bay Packers................$ 114,579,603 Tennessee Titans.................$ 113,494,050 Carolina Panthers.................$ 112,963,398 Oakland Raiders...................$ 111,527,250 Buffalo Bills.........................$ 111,253,126 Arizona Cardinals.................$ 111,138,646 Baltimore Ravens.................$ 109,503,397 Jacksonville Jaguars.............$ 106,879,214 Philadelphia Eagles...............$ 105,393,095 San Francisco 49ers.............$ 103,738,952 Indianapolis Colts.................$ 103,360,985 Denver Broncos....................$ 101,658,735 Washington Redskins.............$ 99,953,611 Detroit Lions........................$ 99,910,434 Minnesota Vikings.................$ 99,802,010 St. Louis Rams.....................$ 99,707,892 San Diego Chargers..............$ 97,716,395 New England Patriots............$ 96,913,133 Atlanta Falcons...................$ 95,062,952 Cleveland Browns.................$ 93,932,182 Cincinnati Bengals................$ 93,840,588 Dallas Cowboys....................$ 90,340,939 Seattle Seahawks.................$ 89,075,820 Tampa Bay Buccaneers..........$ 84,592,822 Kansas City Chiefs................$ 81,829,650
Furthermore, they have been among the top in salaries for the past few years. So it's not just a one time deal. That said, it sure SEEMS like McNair's cheap because all we do is overpay for mediocrity in the FA. And it ends up strapping our cap. We gave Walker(and perhaps Glenn too?) huge bonuses to resign, and then cut him to screw our cap space for a year. David Carr took up a huge chunk of the cap for the years he's been here, including that oh-so-horrible roster bonus when Kubiak came in. We sign crap for huge money and then they remain crap or become worse. Now, the question is, is it McNair's fault that our scouting department sucks and that we can't evaluate talent worth **** outside the draft? Or that we don't have enough coaches/trainers to develop our players? Drayton was spending huge on the Astros payroll, but you can't say he's not partly to blame for our decline because he penny-pinched in the minors, leaving us with no prospects in recent years.
How can the scouting dept suck and continue to draft so well? Evaluating talent at the college level is tougher than signing known commodities through free agency. Remember that we signed Kevin Walter. Antonio Smith displayed his worth and really came on strong towards the end of the season. People also forget so quickly that we had a great signing in Bernard Pollard.
Here's whats funny about some of the people who are complaining that the Texans are "doing nothing". Free agency is all about overpaying people. It's the class and the first guy who signs at their position also creates the market for that position. Each year that number seems to be a higher value salary than what it should be, but that's just how it is. Now the people that have whined that the Texans haven't signed any free agents ARE THE SAME PEOPLE that complain that all we do is overpay for mediocre free agents. Well going into this offseason, the general consensus was that this Free Agent class was an overall extremely weak one. If you look at the top 5 free agents lists published all over the place by various people before this period started you would see Julius Peppers #1 and then Dunta Robinson around #3 or #4. That is an EXTREME drop off in talent. If there isn't a guy you think is worth the money to sign, why sign him? Some people just want us to bring in new people, because its the offseason and its BORING when your team doesn't sign anyone period. It's like a circle, last season it's "Lets sign Antonio", now those people are like "Yea we overpaid for Antonio but let's sign XXXX" followed by in the offseason, "Yea we overpaid for XXXX", and so on and so on. Now I'm a fan of the Antonio Smith signing so that is no knock to that, I'm just pointing how to some people its all fun in games during this part of the offseason to get the thrill of signing people because quite frankly there isn't anything else to be entertained about football wise until the draft comes.
Do we draft better than other teams? I have neither the time nor the interest to do a study, but I really doubt we find more gems than other good teams. I still see our defensive line looking like crap when we've invested multiple 1st round picks, FA signings and resignings on it. And it's been this way since our existence. I'm only willing to say we don't draft badly. As in we're not the Lions or the Raiders of the draft. Yes and No. The premier free agents? I agree with you. But under the radar FA can usually be signed cheaply and contribute greatly. Thomas Jones was dumped by his original team only to prosper elsewhere. Wes Welker signed a pretty mediocre deal with the Patriots before he became a pro bowl WR. The list of FA who went on to success happens often. The problem is that these players aren't with the Texans. Or if they are, they get resigned for major deal and then disappear(Andre Davis being the notable recent example). So we haven't really reaped the benefit of FA like many good teams have done.
Think again. According to Forbes, the Texans are the best drafting team since 2006. This article was written before we drafted another pro-bowler in Cushing. Barwin will come on and Glover Quin was obviously another steal. Also keep in mind that Slaton should have made the pro-bowl in his rookie season. http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/08/nfl-draft-teams-lifestyle-sports-nfl-draft.html
First, it's Forbes... in a football discussion. Second, you really think that's a good way to judge a draft? Honestly?
Look at the picks bro...If we arent the best, then we are definitely top 5. There is no doubt that he have been amongst the best within the last few seasons. And whats wrong with how they judge the draft...its pretty in depth.
Forbes really loves the Texans. I think they were the ones to vote us for the best tailgate as well..
Well, if you and others say so, I'll take your words for it then. Would be nice if they can scout current NFL players as well as prospective ones.
True, but I don't blame Kubiak-Smith for that as much as McNair. Keeping Carr allowed us to draft Mario (kinda), so it wasn't all terrible.
I'm not ready to pull the bust card out yet on a guy who is only now 22 years old and playing DL against, on average, dudes 10 years his senior. This is his make or break year, though. He has to show some promise for the Texans to keep him.
