This sounds like a very Texanhater-esque post. Over-react to a rumor about the Texans signing a FA RB, and take the opportunity to bash them any chance you get. Have you seen the amount of improvement in this team over the past 2 years?
So, what if they fill RB a need position by signing Turner - a freaking FA for who they wouldn't have to give up picks - and then get a CB, LT or Cb in the first two rounds, then get a RB in the rd since the draft is so deep - as you mention? Where's the error in that? Ahhhhhhhh! Lemme guess - you're a Titans fan?
Ok, it looks like they want to dump picks for D'Angelo Hall. Either way, why overpay for Turner when there are so many stud RBs in the draft? Didn't they learn from the Ahman Green debacle? Houston should try to add depth on their O-line and the secondary.
Two problems: 1) Where in the world are you reading anything about the Texans wanting to dump picks for Deangelo Hall? "Looks like," or are you fabricating rumors so you can whine? I wonder which is more likely. 2) Green was 30, had 1,871 previous NFL carries and eight seasons to add wear and tear to his legs, and had come off a very serious knee injury in 2005. Turner is 26, has 228 previous NFL carries, and no injury history whatsoever. Can you please elaborate on the similarities between these two and what they could "learn" from Green that is applicable to Turner? I'm not saying I'd overpay and go all out for Turner, but you could just as easily sign Turner and add depth to the OL and secondary in the draft instead of going RB.
1. Dude, the first page of the thread talks about DeAngelo Hall for picks. 2. I watched Turner in the playoffs and I have a hard time believing that he can be as productive behind Salaam and Pitts. For a young team like Houston they need to add as much depth as possible, which is why I thought the Schaub deal was premature. They could've stayed with Sage another year, or maybe signed someone cheap like Daunte Culpepper or Trent Green to help with the leadership side. It's amazing how many holes the Texans have after like 6 seasons in the league, and they can't afford to dump off any more picks. They have no 2nd rounder this year in a VERY deep draft, RBwise. I think it's a testament to the coaching staff that they managed 8 wins last year with Andre Johnson out for half the year. Here's a list of needs for Houston if they want to compete for the AFC title: O-line Safety RB WR (slot/possession type) CB If they can land someone like DeSean Jackson or Jonathan Stewart in the draft it will be a huge burden off Andre Johnson's shoulders, as they'd finally have another offensive weapon.
True...and it's hard to say what is a greater need. I think they have to take either Stewart or Mendenhall. Another year of Dayne, Green and whatever free agent sounds absolutely terrible. But, now that Von Hutchins is gone and Dunta is out...our secondary looks pretty bad as well. And the O-line? I'd rate it as the third most important position to address.
Umm ok, Im sure Kubiak signs high priced RB's even though that goes against everything he believes in (which is the zone blocking scheme which doesnt require a dazzling running back)
It's one statement from a random fan. Need to have a little more than that before we go talking about what it looks like the Texans are doing... As for building depth through the draft and not wasting picks, I completely agree with you. But you're acting as though the Texans would lose a pick if they went after Michael Turner, and that's just not true. Turner isn't Green, and while the draft is deep with backs, it's deep at a handful of other spots as well and they could just as easily address OL or the secondary with their third rounder.
Its almost like some fans want to win in t he future... and not now. If we get Turner, we get a back with experience, and good size and speed... and a back who knows what to do.. If we pick up a rookie, regardless of whether its Stewart or Mendenhall, I think they cant help carry us to the post season... they could be good, but I highly doubt they can be like an "Adrian-Peterson"
Hi, a year ago called and they want their information about Michael Turner back. Thanks. Say, did you hear about that awesome quarterback who won a National Championship who's coming out in the draft? Vince somebody?
http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/stories/2008/03/02/turner_0303.html Falcons sign prized RB Turner Former Chargers rusher gets six-year deal By STEVE WYCHE The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 03/02/08 The Falcons agreed to terms on a six-year deal with San Diego free-agent running back Michael Turner Sunday, landing the player they desperately sought to bolster their running game. Amid the tempered elation of securing the bruising tailback with game-breaking speed, comes the probable release of veteran tailback Warrick Dunn. Dunn has been one of the Falcons most notable and popular players for the past six seasons. The Falcons also signed tight end Ben Hartsock. Hartsock, (6-foot-4, 265 pounds) was an unrestricted free agent from Tennessee. He is a four-year veteran who was originally selected in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft by Indianapolis out of Ohio State. In 45 career games played, he has totaled 24 receptions for 247 yards (10.3 avg.). Last season with Tennessee, Hartsock set a career high with 12 receptions for 138 yards. 6-year/$34.5M
Turner = 6 years, 34.5 million = ~5.75 million per year. Green = 4 years, 23 million = ~5.75 million per year. Turner >>>> Green. Crap.
Total value of contracts and average value per year means absolutely zero in the NFL... we'll have a better comparison when we see what's guaranteed.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/03/02/bc.fbn.turner.falcons/ Longtime L.T. backup will probably be No. 1 in Atlanta Posted: Sunday March 2, 2008 4:20PM; Updated: Sunday March 2, 2008 4:33PM ATLANTA (AP) -- Michael Turner, considered perhaps the top running back available in free agency, agreed to a six-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The deal is worth $35 million, with $15 million guaranteed, according to SI.com's Bucky Brooks. A four-year veteran who has been best known as LaDainian Tomlinson's backup in San Diego, Turner is expected to play a more important role with the Falcons. He is projected as the power complement to speed back Jerious Norwood. The addition of Turner likely signals the end of Warrick Dunn's time as the starter. Turner (5-10, 237) has 228 carries for 1,257 yards and six touchdowns in four seasons with San Diego. He also has three of the longest 11 carries in team history -- 83, 74 and 73 yards. He has averaged 5.5 yards per carry in his career. Atlanta was Turner's first stop in the free-agency period, and Falcons officials made sure he didn't make any other visits. Turner began his weekend visit on Friday, and attended an Arena Football League game in Atlanta with Falcons coach Mike Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff on Saturday. Falcons owner Arthur Blank also owns the AFL's Georgia Force. "We are pleased to be able to add a very talented running back and a player who has produced at a high level in this league when given the opportunity," Dimitroff said. "We think he's ready to take the next step and have a more prominent role in an offense, and we are happy he decided that opportunity is going to be here in Atlanta." Turner showed his potential as a starter when given the chance to fill in for Tomlinson. Turner rushed for 316 yards on 71 carries last season and added 164 yards on 43 carries in the playoffs. In a Week 5 game against Denver, Turner set a career-high with 147 yards rushing, including a 74-yard touchdown run, in the Chargers' 41-3 win. It was Turner's third career 100-yard game. "Besides being a quality football player, Michael Turner is a quality person," Smith said. "He is the type of player we are looking for to help build our football team. I'm excited that he is joining the Atlanta Falcons." The Falcons already have added four free agents. The team also agreed to terms with tight end Ben Hartsock of Tennessee on Sunday. Hartsock (6-4, 265) is a four-year veteran who was drafted in the third round in 2004 by Indianapolis and had 12 catches for 138 yards with Tennessee last season. The Falcons signed defensive backs Erik Coleman and Von Hutchins on Saturday and re-signed quarterback Chris Redman, who finished the 2007 season as the starter.
True...but we've already paid Green 4.2 million for his contributions last year. Good chance that he remains a Texan for the upcoming year in which he will cost slightly over 5 million. After next season, he will still cost about 5 million dollars in bonuses, even if we cut him. That deal with Turner, even with 15 million guaranteed, is a much safer contract than the one we gave to an over the hill, injury plagued player. I still hope Ahman can contribute...but his age and nagging injuries he showed this past season seem to conclude that we spent millions on a player that gave us basically nothing in return. I hope he can stay healthy this year and give us at least something back.
